Judges Needed for New York City Science and Engineering Fair

The New York City Science and Engineering Fair for NYC High School students is, for the first year, sponsored by the City University of New York under the auspices of the CUNY College Now Program (which I work for).

The Science Fair is looking for judges in fourteen areas, including social and behavioral sciences. Judges can be practicing scientists, doctoral students or other professionals in their fields in the New York City area (unfortunately the program cannot provide accommodations or funding for people coming from outside the area).

It's an excellent volunteer opportunity and a chance to meet talented students from throughout New York City and become involved in fostering and promoting science education.

You can find more information on qualifications for judges as well as the fair in general on the website:
http://collegenow.cuny.edu/sciencefair/

I can answer some questions as well, or at least direct you to someone who definitely can.

Thanks so much!
We hope to see many of you at our first ever Yale Latino Alumni Reunion (YLAA), which will be held April 3 - 5! A team of dozens of Latino alumni have volunteered their time to organize this exciting event, which is the first national event being organized by YLAA.

At the Reunion, we will provide an update on YLAA's organizational development and results from the AYA/YLAA survey that was sent out in the Fall, hold a brainstorming session on future YLAA's future, and announce the nominations and elections process for the first elected Board. We hope to have a new Board installed later this year and encourage you to think about nominating your friends or YOURSELF! For now, we wanted to provide the attached overview of the organization. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

We are certain that tons of energy will be created from the exciting program that the Reunion Committee Co-Chairs, Araceli Campos and Sara Salvide, have been working with their team on.

Hi,

My name is Robert Sanchez (SY '08) and I am writing to ask for your help in responding to changes being implemented to Yale College's counseling program. In the upcoming weeks, the Yale administration plans to make changes to its freshman counselor program. As former students who benefited from the EC program, past ECs, and concerned alumni, we feel that the proposed changes would be detrimental to the counselor program and would have a negative impact on future students of color entering Yale. Unless we respond quickly, these new changes will begin to take place in the next week.

The proposed changes are outlined below, as well as a list of some of the problems we feel exist with the new plans. We ask that you please read through these changes, our concerns, and respond by writing an email to Dean Mary Miller, Dean of Yale College (mary.miller@yale.edu) and Dean Marichal Gentry, Dean of Student Affairs (marichal.gentry@yale.edu). Please respond ASAP this week as these changes will begin to be implemented in the upcoming days. The email should only take a few minutes.

In your response, we encourage you to elaborate as much as you would like, sharing your own experiences with the counselor program and why you feel it is important to preserve. It is very important to share our viewpoints as alums to the administration, to demonstrate why they need to change their approach to the counselor program. Also, please pass this along to other alums who would be interested in helping to respond.

Thank you for your help with this issue.

Sincerely,

support a stronger labor movement, Union Privilege has developed a
scholarship program to help more women and people of color become
union leaders. The program provides annual awards up to $3,000 to
help future leaders with the cost of continuing their education or
training in order to pursue their union career goals and leadership
skills.

How to Apply
Visit the Union Plus site for more information and to download an
application. The application deadline is September 29, 2007.

Eligibility
A current union member from the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, Guam and
the Virgin Islands of a union participating in any Union Plus
program.

Completed application form with a recommendation letter from a union
leader who has knowledge of the applicant's leadership potential.

Applicant must be female and/or a member of a racial/ethnic
minority, defined as American Indian or Alaskan, Asian or Pacific
Islander, African American, Hispanic, or multi-racial.

Award Usage
Applied toward the completion of an accredited degree, coursework or
seminar at an accredited educational institution (college,
university, community college, recognized technical or trade
school). Important note: Not all union-sponsored leadership training
courses are accredited. This program is offered under the Union Plus
Education Foundation Trust, which means the program is restricted to
granting awards for degrees/courses/seminars that are accredited.

related travel and expenses.

Classes on THE JOY OF IMPROV and on CLASSIC POLITICAL NOVELS taught by Bob Lamm.

Bob Lamm--a member of the class of 1969 and a Visiting Lecturer at Yale in 1978 and 1980--will be offering two classes this fall and winter at the City University of New York Graduate Center (34th St. and 5th Ave.)

THE JOY OF IMPROV: Join in the fun of doing improvisational comedy in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. No performing experience is necessary--just a willingness to experiment, play, and laugh with others! No student is forced to do an exercise or game, but everyone is encouraged to participate. (Four Thursday nights, September through December. You can attend on a single-session basis. This class ran at the Grad Center for 13 semesters from 2001 through 2007.)

CLASSIC POLITICAL NOVELS: We will read and discuss five political novels--among them, John Steinbeck's THE PEARL (which students must read for the first session), Chinua Achebe's THINGS FALL APART, and Carson McCullers' THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER. These works are "political" not because they examine politics or government but because they richly illuminate power relations--including dynamics of gender, race, and class--while telling memorable, moving stories. Students will be expected to read each novel and participate actively in class discussions. (Five Tuesday nights, September through January.)

INSTRUCTOR: Bob Lamm's political articles, personal essays, interviews, and profiles have appeared in more than 40 periodicals--among them, the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and Ms. Magazine--and in six anthologies. He has taught "serious" classes at Yale, Queens College, and the New School. He has run improv classes and workshops for the CUNY Grad Center, the HOPE Program, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the NYSTEA Drama Power Conferences, Friends in Deed, the Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company, and ...

Yale Latino/as have never been afraid to take on the causes that matter most to them whether they be personal, local, or global in scope. As Latina/o Yalies we can continue to leverage the opportunities and resources we have available to us through our relationship with Yale in order to make positive changes in the world. As we do this, it is useful to remember that professionals need not stop being activists and activists always benefit from being professional (i.e. experts) in their endeavors.

At last weeks event, the interim working group also announced a goal of raising $2,500 to benefit the Latino Alumni Fund and the Latino Alumni Prize. The group believed the goal was attainable but could not have anticipated that it would be surpassed almost as quickly as it was announced. Carlos M. Morales, class of 75, Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel at Merrill Lynch, pledged a $10,000 challenge grant that very evening. His generous contribution will not only support the Latino Alumni Prize, it will help provide for the immediate, emergency needs for many of our current students. The Board and I will work with Carlos and all our other donors to make sure these funds are used wisely and effectively.

We are extremely appreciative of Carlos' support and have no doubt that his gift will inspire other alumni to make meaningful contributions. I also anticipate that his challenge will be met. Indeed, we collected almost $1,000 at last weeks event to start that effort. Given what Ive learned in my work with Latino alumni from other regions, Im guessing they will be looking to embellish on the job that Carlos and the other Tri-State area alumni already started. If you are interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to the Latino Alumni Fund, please see the attached pledge form.

After 30 years of development, the Latino community at Yale is reaching a major milestone this weekend with a move toward organizing alumni on a national scale.

An interim National Latino Alumni Board, consisting of 12 former Yale undergraduates from around the country, will be meeting in New Haven on Saturday to discuss the organization of the growing Yale Latino alumni community. At the meeting, the interim board members hope to establish the ground work for a national association of Yale Latino alumni.

KING CORN, a feature documentary by three Yale College alums, premiered at Cinema Village in New York City on October 12th and is now playing in select cities around the country.

KING CORN is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In the film, Ian Cheney ('02 and MEM '03) and Curt Ellis ('02) move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat—and how we farm.
