The core operations of YAAMNY shall be to:

  • Facilitate and create opportunities for alumni to gather, exchange ideas and launch programs for life-long learning;
  • Maintain the online center for communication and promotions open to all alumni communities in New York and their diverse enterprises and creative endeavors;
  • Deploy Internet tools to facilitate collaboration among YAAMNY leaders and other Yale volunteers in New York;
  • Support and develop opportunities and programs for our membership to serve our communities and the public interest;
  • Partner with AYA on programmatic, operational and communications initiatives in our continued pursuit of Yale's mission in the world.

Over half of the AYA Leadership Forum (ALF) participants joined the Listserve (Yahoo) (Listserve Yahoo would be a hyperlink to the group)  to exchange ideas. Your input and inquiries are always welcome.
 
To further our communication and broaden our sharing, all ALF participants are pre-registered on a Wiki-quick edit site created by participants Alberto Molina (YAAMNY), Parag Patel (YaleLA), Blair Golson (YaleLA) and myself (Robert Cole WashDC).
 
We realize multiple sites are challenging, but this YaleNet site allows topic creation, link or extranet integration, document archiving, Wiki-like updates, and continued improvement. You can edit most anything you see.  While YCL has it's own area, we're not guinea pigs -  YAAMNY has successfully used the site for over 2 years.
 
The YaleNet collaborative online intranet, extranet and document archive is designed so Yale Club leaders and their members could collaborate on common goals and hope that YOU will take the additional step of posting what you believe will be useful information to other members and leaders.  For this reason, we made the majority of the website accessible to everyone.

Organizing a Club

Leadership and Governance

The key to sustaining your group is ensuring more than one person has ownership of the group.

Extending ownership involves reaching out to other collaborators and also documenting policies for the organization and management of the group. 

The combination of Leadership (time and effort expeded by individuals) and Governance (documents and policies to guide Leadership efforts) is the essential life force of an organization.  If assembled correctly this combination will give your organization a life of its own.

 

Organizing a Social

Putting together a Host Committee

If you want a lot of people to come it helps to have lots of people inviting people to  your event. 

There are two key elements to this:

  • get a diverse group to act as hosts
  • make sure everyone hosting has ownership over the event

Getting a Diverse Host Committee

It is ideal to collect hosts that are spread among the demographics of your constituency.  If you share Hosting duties with only your best friends, then you are less likely to reach into areas of your constituency where you may not already have as strong relationships.

You may also want to consider

  • defining a mission for your event
  • the diversity of your host committee (age, vocation, socioeconomic)
