YLAA Opportunity to Help Ensure that New York Voters Cast Ballots that Count!

 

YLAA calls on its members to volunteer for Election Protection, the nations largest non-partisan voter protection coalition on September 14, 2010, the day of the New York primary! There are two opportunities to assist the efforts to ensure that voters cast a meaningful ballot  the 1-866-OUR-VOTE hotline and mobile legal volunteers.  Election Protection is operated by the non-profit and non-partisan organization Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

 

For the first time in more than fifty years, New York State will be using a new method for voting --"optical scan" (think standardized tests) voting machines.  Due to confusing error messages and lack of public awareness around this new technology, voting experts fear that elderly, non-English speaking and minority voters will experience difficulties in voting that may lead to their vote not being counted.

 

You can help!  Volunteers with Spanish language skills are especially needed. Sign up to either be a mobile legal volunteer or a hotline volunteer!

 

Mobile Legal Volunteers (MLVs)

On Primary Day, teams of 2 MLVs will be assigned to a set of polling sites within the five boroughs. MLVs will:

o Conduct a survey specifically designed around the voting machine issue;

o Report any problems on the ground to the appropriate channels; and

o Assist voters by communicating with poll workers and the Election Protection hotline if any issues arise.

 

Hotline Volunteers

From the call center at Davis Polk & Wardwell in Midtown Manhattan, hotline volunteers will answer calls from voters on Primary Day and give voters the information and resources they need on issues ranging from voter registration, unhelpful poll workers, voting machine problems and voter intimidation.  Moreover, the data collected is used to enact reform at the local and national levels.

 

Minimal Time Commitment

o All volunteers must attend one training session, to be held in early September at the offices of one of the law firm partners in either Midtown or the Financial District.

For those of you that may not know, during the last three decades Judge Padro has held a gathering of local Yale Latino alumni in his home on the day after Thanksgiving.  Many Latino undergraduates have their first contact with alumni at this gathering, and it has served of the basis for building life long professional relationships as well as friendships. We are proud to continue this tradition at Rodrigo and Melanie Fuentes' home.  Dress is casual, and we will continue the celebration after 10:00 p.m. at one of the area restaurant/bars.

MISSION STATEMENT:
The Yale Latino Alumni Association of the Tri-State Area (YLAA-TSA) serves as an organization supporting the diverse communities of Latinos joined by their connections to Yale University who are residing in or otherwise affiliated with the Tri-State Area. Reflecting the interests and needs of Latinos from different national origins and Yale schools, YLAA-TSA functions as a link to and advocate with both the National Yale Latino Alumni Association (YLAA) and the University. To facilitate a continued bond among all Yale Latinos in the Tri-State Area, YLAA-TSA provides a flexible structure that both respects and encourages the shared interests of its membership.

YLAA-TSA hopes to leverage the skills, opportunities, and resources we have available to us as Yale graduates to help Yale achieve its broader social impact. To this end, YLAA-TSA along with the National YLAA and its affiliates are actively involved in: creating networking opportunities for alumni, mentoring and supporting current Latino students, advocating for progress at Yale in areas such as Latino recruitment and faculty and curriculum diversity, and maintaining consistent and continued collaboration and communication with the University.

Ciencia National Scholarships - College STEM Majors
A $2,000 one-time scholarship for students from all 50 states, the District
of Columbia, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico who meet the following
eligibility criteria:

* A student of Hispanic heritage.
* In good academic standing and enrolled full-time in an accredited
college/university.
* Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0
scale (or the equivalent).

Are a declared major in a STEM discipline and pursuing a Bachelor's degree
in a STEM field including Bachelor's degrees offered in partnerships between
community colleges and four-year institutions

My name is Robert Sanchez (SY '08) and I am writing to ask for your help in responding to changes being implemented to Yale College's counseling program. In the upcoming weeks, the Yale administration plans to make changes to its freshman counselor program. As former students who benefited from the EC program, past ECs, and concerned alumni, we feel that the proposed changes would be detrimental to the counselor program and would have a negative impact on future students of color entering Yale. Unless we respond quickly, these new changes will begin to take place in the next week.

 

The proposed changes are outlined below, as well as a list of some of the problems we feel exist with the new plans. We ask that you please read through these changes, our concerns, and respond by writing an email to Dean Mary Miller, Dean of Yale College (mary.miller@yale.edu) and Dean Marichal Gentry, Dean of Student Affairs (marichal.gentry@yale.edu). Please respond ASAP this week as these changes will begin to be implemented in the upcoming days. The email should only take a few minutes.

 

In your response, we encourage you to elaborate as much as you would like, sharing your own experiences with the counselor program and why you feel it is important to preserve. It is very important to share our viewpoints as alums to the administration, to demonstrate why they need to change their approach to the counselor program. Also, please pass this along to other alums who would be interested in helping to respond.

Eduardo Padro ('75) has held a gathering of local Yale Puerto Rican and Latino alumni in his home the day after Thanksgiving.  Many Latino undergraduates have their first contact with alumni at this gathering, and it has served as the basis for building life long professional relationships as well as friendships.

OYE - Yale's Latino Spoken Word Group

 

Founded in the Fall of 2007, Oye is Yale's first Latino spoken word group. Based on weekly workshops that explore various topics relating to Latino identity, Oye welcomes students from diverse backgrounds to come together and write, discuss, and perform. After finishing its first show, "Se Habla Latino," featuring 15 pieces from its 10 members, Oye is looking forward to its promising future as an outstanding performance group in the Yale Latino community.

 
Suggested donation of $25 to benefit the Yale Latino Cultural Center Fund, which provides support for the Latino Cultural Center, including the Latino Alumni Prize, which honors two graduating seniors who have shown an outstanding commitment to the Latino community at Yale while maintaining a high level of academic excellence.

The two Co-Chairs have the primary responsibility of setting the tone for the organization and serving as the liaison to the University.  The At-Large Members of the Board attend bi-monthly board meetings and chair our outreach, special events, fund-raising and mentorship committees.  Each of those elected will serve a 2-year term to run from May 2008 to May 2010.

Morales, class of 75, Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel at Merrill Lynch, pledged a $10,000  challenge grant that very evening.  His generous contribution will not only support the Latino Alumni Prize, it will help provide for the immediate, emergency needs for many of our current students.  The Board and I will work with Carlos and all our other donors to make sure these funds are used wisely and effectively.
     
    We are extremely appreciative of Carlos' support and have no doubt that his gift will inspire other alumni to make meaningful contributions.  I also anticipate that his challenge will be met. Indeed, we collected almost $1,000 at last weeks event to start that effort. Given what Ive learned in my work with Latino alumni from other regions, Im guessing they will be looking to embellish on the job that Carlos and the other Tri-State area alumni already started.  If you are interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to the Latino Alumni Fund, please see the attached pledge form.

    On October 3, 2007, LaLSA held its Third Annual Awards Banquet.  The banquet honored the accomplishments of outstanding Latino alumni professionals. 

    This elegant evening featured cocktails, dinner, and the presentation of LaLSA's awards to three distinguished Latino alumni.  This years awardees were the Honorable Reinaldo Rivera (CLS 77), Carlos M. Morales (CLS 79), and Henry Ricardo (CLS 93).

    The New York City Science and Engineering Fair for NYC High School students is, for the first year, sponsored by the City University of New York under the auspices of the CUNY College Now Program (which I work for).

    The Science Fair is looking for judges in fourteen areas, including social and behavioral sciences. Judges can be practicing scientists, doctoral students or other professionals in their fields in the New York City area (unfortunately the program cannot provide accommodations or funding for people coming from outside the area).

    It's an excellent volunteer opportunity and a chance to meet talented students from throughout New York City and become involved in fostering and promoting science education.

    Organizing a Club

    Leadership and Governance

    The key to sustaining your group is ensuring more than one person has ownership of the group.

    Extending ownership involves reaching out to other collaborators and also documenting policies for the organization and management of the group. 

    The combination of Leadership (time and effort expeded by individuals) and Governance (documents and policies to guide Leadership efforts) is the essential life force of an organization.  If assembled correctly this combination will give your organization a life of its own.

     

    Organizing a Social

    Putting together a Host Committee

    If you want a lot of people to come it helps to have lots of people inviting people to  your event. 

    There are two key elements to this:

    • get a diverse group to act as hosts
    • make sure everyone hosting has ownership over the event

    Getting a Diverse Host Committee

    It is ideal to collect hosts that are spread among the demographics of your constituency.  If you share Hosting duties with only your best friends, then you are less likely to reach into areas of your constituency where you may not already have as strong relationships.

    You may also want to consider

    • defining a mission for your event
    • the diversity of your host committee (age, vocation, socioeconomic)
