The Yale Latino Alumni Association of the Tri-State Area presents our Annual Spring Reception 

Latinos in The Big Apple!

Come and join the Yale Latino family as we welcome our new alumni to New York City!  Meet up with old friends and make new ones.  This year we will focus on Latinos in public service, featuring several notable alumni.

Every year the Yale Latino Alumni of the Tri State Area hosts a special reception to bring together Latinos from various generations to celebrate and reflect on our history and future goals as Latino alumni.  This event is a great networking opportunity for all.  Come and find out about various exciting plans in the works, including a sneak peak at the BIG REUNION at YALE in April 2012, and meet the new board members!  Also if you would like to get the Latino Alumni body at your event, this is a great opportunity to come and let us know about it.

YLAA Opportunity to Help Ensure that New York Voters Cast Ballots that Count!

 

YLAA calls on its members to volunteer for Election Protection, the nations largest non-partisan voter protection coalition on September 14, 2010, the day of the New York primary! There are two opportunities to assist the efforts to ensure that voters cast a meaningful ballot  the 1-866-OUR-VOTE hotline and mobile legal volunteers.  Election Protection is operated by the non-profit and non-partisan organization Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

 

For the first time in more than fifty years, New York State will be using a new method for voting --"optical scan" (think standardized tests) voting machines.  Due to confusing error messages and lack of public awareness around this new technology, voting experts fear that elderly, non-English speaking and minority voters will experience difficulties in voting that may lead to their vote not being counted.

 

You can help!  Volunteers with Spanish language skills are especially needed. Sign up to either be a mobile legal volunteer or a hotline volunteer!

 

Mobile Legal Volunteers (MLVs)

On Primary Day, teams of 2 MLVs will be assigned to a set of polling sites within the five boroughs. MLVs will:

o Conduct a survey specifically designed around the voting machine issue;

o Report any problems on the ground to the appropriate channels; and

o Assist voters by communicating with poll workers and the Election Protection hotline if any issues arise.

 

Hotline Volunteers

From the call center at Davis Polk & Wardwell in Midtown Manhattan, hotline volunteers will answer calls from voters on Primary Day and give voters the information and resources they need on issues ranging from voter registration, unhelpful poll workers, voting machine problems and voter intimidation.  Moreover, the data collected is used to enact reform at the local and national levels.

 

Minimal Time Commitment

o All volunteers must attend one training session, to be held in early September at the offices of one of the law firm partners in either Midtown or the Financial District.

o On Primary Day (September 14, 2010), both hotline volunteers and MLVs will be assigned to one shift of at least four hours (5:30AM-

9:30AM; 9:30AM-1:30PM; 1:30PM-5:30PM; 5:30PM-9:30PM).

Ciencia National Scholarships - College STEM Majors
A $2,000 one-time scholarship for students from all 50 states, the District
of Columbia, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico who meet the following
eligibility criteria:

* A student of Hispanic heritage.
* In good academic standing and enrolled full-time in an accredited
college/university.
* Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0
scale (or the equivalent).

Are a declared major in a STEM discipline and pursuing a Bachelor's degree
in a STEM field including Bachelor's degrees offered in partnerships between

OYE - Yale's Latino Spoken Word Group

 

Founded in the Fall of 2007, Oye is Yale's first Latino spoken word group. Based on weekly workshops that explore various topics relating to Latino identity, Oye welcomes students from diverse backgrounds to come together and write, discuss, and perform. After finishing its first show, "Se Habla Latino," featuring 15 pieces from its 10 members, Oye is looking forward to its promising future as an outstanding performance group in the Yale Latino community.

 
Suggested donation of $25 to benefit the Yale Latino Cultural Center Fund, which provides support for the Latino Cultural Center, including the Latino Alumni Prize, which honors two graduating seniors who have shown an outstanding commitment to the Latino community at Yale while maintaining a high level of academic excellence.

The Board is comprised of twelve individuals with varying positions. The two Co-Chairs have the primary responsibility of setting the tone for the organization and serving as the liaison to the University.  The At-Large Members of the Board attend bi-monthly board meetings and chair our outreach, special events, fund-raising and mentorship committees.  Each of those elected will serve a 2-year term to run from May 2008 to May 2010.
