When:   January 1, 2010 12:00am
Where:   Red Hook Marine Terminal, corner of Hamilton Avenue, Summit Street and Van Brunt Street, 70 Hamilton Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

Type:   Party

TO BE RESCHEDULED:

The Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York (YAAMNY) is pleased to partner once again with PortSide New York, a Day of Service site, to host a family-friendly tour of the Mary Whalen tanker followed by happy hour at home/made wine garden grill in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

PortSide invites YAAMNY to Red Hook: Learn about the history of the tanker and its crew, catch some fabulous views of the city from the waterfront and enjoy some hot cider and treats. Afterwards, we will gather for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers at home/made wine garden grill, 293 Van Brunt Street (btwn Pioneer and King), Brooklyn, NY, http://www.homemadebklyn.com/index.html.(Please note that food/drink at home/made are not included in registration for ship tour).

PortSide NewYork breathes life into the relationship between landside communities and the maritime sector to the advantage of both, via several avenues, including an H2O arts program, reporting on port and waterfront issues and its chief ambassador: the Mary Whalen, a 170-foot retired coastal oil tanker. To see how PortSide takes advantage of this special asset, check out youtube pages: http://www.youtube.com/PortSideNewYork, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHQ4MwukoO4.

Where: Red Hook Marine Terminal, corner of Hamilton Avenue, Summit Street and Van Brunt Street, 70 Hamilton Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11231; government-issued photo ID required for adults due to Homeland Security regulations (e.g., driver's license, not a job ID); the group will be escorted from security gate to the tanker (about 6 blocks from the entrance); flat shoes required; dress warmly.

At just 26 years old, Seun Adebiyi is one of the most driven individuals you will ever meet. Seun has achieved nearly every goal he has set for himself in life so far. He has a couple big ones left--- and sadly not a lot of time. A 2009 graduate of the Yale Law School who was born in Nigeria and raised in Alabama, Seun was diagnosed with both leukemia and lymphoma while training for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games last year. Now his goal is to register 10,000 people as bone marrow donors with DKMS, the largest bone marrow donor center in the world. His mission is to not only save his own life, but to save thousands of others, like himself in need of a life-saving transplant.

Statistics: The likelihood of finding a match is much higher within a persons own ethnic group. However, due to a significant under-representation of minorities in the National Bone Marrow Registry, Seun is facing grim odds. Only about 515,000 of the potential donors about 8 % of the registry are African-Americans. As a result, 83% African-American patients do not receive the life saving transplants they need. Overall, only 3 out of 10 patients will receive the transplant that can save their life.*

Here is how YOU can help:

  1. Attend Seun's donor drive - January 10, 2010 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Yale Club of New York City Tap Room / 50 Vanderbilt Avenue, New York, NY
  2. Register as a bone marrow donor on line at www.dkmsamericas.org
  3. Organize your own donor drive anywhere in US call Alina Suprunova at 212.209.6703 or e-mail This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript
  4. Help spread the word! Send out the information above to all friends, family and colleagues.
  5. WE ALSO NEED 10-15 VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE YALE CLUB MEMBERS TO HELP THE DAY OF THE DRIVE
IMMEDIATE GOAL: Register 10,000 new bone marrow donors and raise $650,000 to cover the cost
Annual 2010 goal: Register 100,000 new bone marrow donors and raise $6.5 million to cover the cost
For further information on donation and registering go to www.dkmsamericas.org or call (866) 340-DKMS.

DKMS would like to thank the YAAMNY Public Service & Social Justice Committee for co-sponsoring this event.

DKMS is a tax exempt organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Making a Difference in Monterrey, Mexico

March 13-21, 2010

The Association of Yale Alumni and Dwight Hall invite you to join us for the next Yale Service Tour to Monterrey, Mexico!

Building on the incredible success of our inaugural Yale Service Tour in March 2009 and the first tour to Monterrey in March 2010, we are proud to continue this initiative, which brings alumni and students together to share their passion and talents with communities in need. The AYA and Dwight Hall have forged a partnership with the University Tecnológico de Monterrey--enabling us to offer this powerful volunteer program in Mexico during March 2010.

This Service Tour will engage Yale alumni and students--together with local volunteers--providing crucial community development, enrichment programs, and medical care in and around the city of Monterrey.

The program includes an array of volunteer projects, designed to match the skills of our alumni participants and to address the particular needs of each community we serve. Our service projects will range from medical clinics to education, athletics, arts enrichment, construction, small business management, and others.

Yale Service Tours enable you, as participants, to work side by side with local community members--helping, teaching, learning, and forming friendships you will never forget. Participants will also delve into the Monterrey region's culture and history through lectures, evening excursions, celebrations, and informal discussion.

We hope you will join fellow alumni and friends in March to share this moving experience. Your time and talent will make a world of difference!

Dwight Hall gratefully acknowledges the Yale Club of New Haven for

providing $8,000 in student scholarships for this tour.

A complete program description may be found here.

We are pleased to have ASTRID ANDRE '94 serve as Team Leader for this site.  For more info, please contact Amanda Taffy at This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript

Born on January 15, 1929, Dr. King lead one of the most successful non-violent civil rights movements in history.  In addition to being the youngest recepient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his advancement of human rights,  Dr.  King was a beloved husband and father.

An excerpt from Dr. King's acceptance speech of the Nobel Peace Prize follows:

"I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that the "isness" of man's present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal "oughtness" that forever confronts him. I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsom and jetsom in the river of life, unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him. I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant. "

Message from Yale University Secretary Linda Lorimer:

As we begin to understand the full magnitude of devastation in Haiti, all of us have wondered how we can help, both as individuals and as a caring community. We all want to do something; the need right now is for money to provide medical care, emergency shelter, and food. Our immediate University-wide plans are focusing on fund-raising for this urgent relief effort. Many members of the Yale community have already committed to a benefit concert on Monday, January 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Woolsey Hall. The performers include Yale Bands, Glee Club and Symphony, Yale Gospel Choir, Shades, Whim 'N Rhythm, the Whiffenpoofs, Schola Cantorum and others. Complete information about the concert and the performing groups is available at www.opa.yale.edu/haiti.

Contributions will go to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Doctors without Borders, Americares, and the United Nations. These organizations already have a presence in Haiti and have begun the work of delivering humanitarian aid, services, and supplies.

The devastating earthquake that has just occurred in Haiti is a huge public health crisis. Officials report that nearly 100,000 individuals may have perished and others are without healthcare, access to water, or other basic necessities. This catastrophic event is the largest earthquake in the country's history, and one of the biggest disasters in our hemisphere. Through our international contacts, we have learned that the best way to help is by raising funds to provide basic necessities. Every dollar counts. One of our big fundraisers is our Help Can't Wait Haiti Benefit concert, will be held this Monday, January 18 7:30 P.M. in Woosley Hall. Requested donation is $10.

 FELA! on Broadway

Enter the extravagant, decadent, rebellious world of a legendary musician.

A provocative hybrid of dance and Broadway musical, FELA! features the Afrobeat music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a book by Jim Lewis and the direction and choreography of Tony® Award winner Bill T. Jones.

His Passion Ignited a Generation.
His Music Fueled a Revolution.
His Legacy Inspires the World.

FELA! uses stirring Afrobeat music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), to tell the story of Kuti's controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. Featuring many of Fela Kuti's most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones's visionary staging, FELA! is the most original new musical on Broadway.

Come for the music. Come for the dancing. Come awaken your soul.

Special thanks to producer Stephen Hendel '73!

In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, many people were left with nothing. Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that collects shoes for those in need, is holding a special shoe drive from January 20 to February 13, specifically for Haiti. Begun in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia, Soles4Souls has since given away over 5.5 million pairs of shoes.

Girls Run is organizing a shoe drive drive on campus to raise awareness and help the relief effort in Haiti. All the shoes we collect will be donated to Soles4Souls. In order to make this a success, we need volunteers to post flyers and put boxes up around campus. If you would like to get involved, please email  This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  or  This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  and we will provide the boxes!

Feel free to forward this information to other clubs or panlists that you know of who might be interested in helping out! The most important thing is to get the word out and let people know this is going on!

Hi Dwight Hall!

On the top of this newsletter you can find tons of service opportunities and social justice events happening this week!

Closer to the bottom you can find great summer and spring break opportunities.

I would like to encourage everyone to consider the Chaplain's Office Spring Break in New Haven. I did it last year and had a fantastic time! It might be the best way to get to know New Haven in a week.

Again, if you are looking for the latest news on Yale's Relief Efforts for Haiti please look here: http://opa.yale.edu/haiti/

Hope all is well,

Joe

The way Yale University invests its $17 billion endowment matters.  If Yale and its students and faculty value human rights, environmental consciousness and social justice, why should its endowment support companies with proven records of workplace discrimination, human rights abuse and environmental degradation?

Show your support for the Responsible Endowment Project.  This Thursday the endowment oversight committee is holding its once-a-year public meeting.  Help us show them that the Yale community cares where our money goes.  Come to the meeting and bring a friend.  Thursday at 4:30 in Law School 127. RSVP to the Facebook event!

Two other things you can do:
1) sign the petition, whether you can make it or not!

2) Offer to add your voice by speaking for ~30 seconds at the meeting about why responsible investing is important to you.  Contact  This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  to coordinate group sign-on.

PLAYING THROUGH FEBRUARY 13 (no Tuesday performances)

Colin McCormack is a popular columnist with a knack for bedding the bi-curious hotties in his soccer league, but he's starting to feel he's missed out on something deeper. Law professor Stew Wisniewski has a bad habit of settling, and has let his once-promising career stagnate in a comfortable but unfulfilling rut. Virtually inseparable since Yale, they've managed to go 20+ years without really examining their relationship.

Enter Tee, a bright and intense  21-year-old who sweeps Colin off his feet. Colin thinks he's found the connection he's been missing; Stew thinks his friend has lost his mind. Convinced the increasingly erratic younger man might be dangerous, Stew forces a confrontation that has unexpected and life-changing consequences.

The hot-button issue of gay marriage percolates under DADDY, forcing Colin and Stew to confront the limits -- both external and self-imposed -- that have shaped their lives. With crackling dialogue, humor and suspense, DADDY offers a provocative look at love, loyalty, and the cost of things unsaid.

Subject: Duke Master of Science in Global Health- Fall 2010 Application Deadline January 30, 2010

Now Accepting Applications for
Master of Science in Global Health - Fall 2010
Priority Deadline: January 30, 2010

As the 21st century unfolds, international attention is focusing increasingly on the health concerns of poor and marginalized populations, and the ramifications of global health inequities for development. From pandemics to environmental degradation, global health is an economic concern and a human issue.

WY3c-M8ElSV6poJ9M96tBe0zcZJrMmV34DREmPXJM-1BKGYy1Tg==>Master of Science in Global Health (MSc-GH) is designed to appeal to an array of students, researchers, policy makers, managers, analysts, and clinical practitioners who desire a more complete understanding of the diverse causes of and solutions to health problems from an interdisciplinary global perspective.
Upon completion of the MSc-GH, graduates will be prepared to engage in clinical, epidemiological, social-behavioral, and policy-oriented research, as well as contribute to the design, implementation, and management of health programs.
The MSc-GH is administered by the Duke Global Health institute (DGHI) and involves many other institutes, departments, and schools. A guiding principle of the degree program is the recognition that a multidisciplinary and multi-sector approach to health is essential, as health is influenced by a multitude of factors, including, but not limited to: individual behaviors; family and childhood dynamics; community characteristics; economic status; gender; genetics; country laws and politics; the environment; and the availability, accessibility, and quality of education, health care, nutrition, water, housing, and other basic goods.
