Since President Kennedy started the Peace Corps in 1961, nearly 1,000 Yale alumni have served all over the world in a variety of assignments through the Peace Corps. Three simple goals comprise the Peace Corps' mission: 1.Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their needs for trained men and women 2.Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served 3.Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of all Americans. New York Philomusica opens its 36th season under the artistic direction of A. Robert Johnson with superb examples of early trios by some of music’s best minds. The program consists of: Joseph Haydn’s Trio in G, Op. 53, No. 1 (1787); A.P.F. KING CORN, a feature documentary by three Yale College alums, will premiere at Cinema Village in New York City on October 12th. KING CORN is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation.In the film, Ian Cheney ('02 and MEM '03) and Curt Ellis ('02) move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat—and how we farm. KING CORN co-Producers Ian Cheney ('02) and Curt Ellis ('02) became best friends at Yale. In college, Ian and Curt tried in various ways to reconnect students to their food, releasing sheep on the central campus, working to bring local foods into the dining halls, and taking incoming freshmen on orientation trips to organic farms. After graduation, Ian and Curt took a cross-country trip, and learned how little they really knew about the centerpiece of the American diet, corn. With Curt’s cousin Aaron on board as director, the team moved to Iowa and started farming and filming in 2004. The film's editor Jeffrey K. Miller ('03) has directed and edited numerous short films, comedy sketches, and commercials, including recent spots for Converse and the US Government. He was an assistant director on the IFC film The Baxter and is a member of the New York comedy troupe Trophy Dad. Jeff attended Yale with Ian and Curt, and is currently enrolled in film school at Columbia. The New York anti-folk band The WoWz is a collaboration between Simon Beins ('03), Sam Grossman ('04), and Johnny Dydo. Their releases include Brudders, Long Grain Rights and Cool Dump. 2007 YALE CLUB/SETON BOOK AWARDS The Yale Club of New Haven welcomed the 2007 Yale Club/Seton Book award winners, their families, and their guidance counselors to the campus on October 16. Thirty-eight local high school seniors received awards at a ceremony held at Davenport College. The awards (two books – one for the student and one for the student's school library) were made possible by a gift from the late Yale alumnus Fenmore R. Seton ’38 and his wife, Phyllis Z. Seton. They are awarded annually to high school students chosen by their schools at the end of junior year for their outstanding personal character and intellectual promise. The program included a discussion of life at Yale with current students as panelists; a question and answer period; a tour of the campus for students and families; an opportunity for counselors to meet with a Yale admissions officer: and lunch in the Davenport College dining hall. The event was sponsored by the Yale Club of New Haven with assistance from the Yale Admissions Office and the Yale Office of New Haven and State Affairs. ===Workshop #1: Campaign Planning=== Workshop Leader: David Karpf, Sierra Club Board Member David Karpf has a long history of leading environmental campaigns and also of training others to plan effective advocacy campaigns through his work in the Sierra Student Coalition and now as the youngest board member of the nation's oldest and largest environmental organization, the Sierra Club. He will present the Sierra Club's model for planning and executing a campaign and answer questions about particular campaign challenges brought up by participants in the workshop. ===Workshop #2: Grant and Proposal Writing=== Workshop Leader: James Farnam, Holt, Wexler & Farnam, LLP James Farnam's practice is focused on community development, workforce development, and human services policy and programs. He has played a central role in building his firm's resource development practice through a number of major funding proposals, including the Elm Haven HOPE VI proposal, the New Haven Enterprise Community and Empowerment Zone Strategic Plan, and over 20 other HUD proposals. In this workshop, he will provide guidance on the task of writing a funding proposal that captures the work that your organization does or plans to do. ===Workshop #3: Publicity and Marketing=== Workshop Leader: Colleen Shaddox, Quicksilver Communication, Inc. Colleen Shaddox is an award-winning journalist, her work has appeared in The New York Times, the Hartford Courant, Connecticut magazine and American Journalism Review. Her media-relations work includes favorable placements for clients in USA Today and on public radio and ABC News.
