Starting a business from scratch in any industry in any country is difficult. Starting a business in which you have had no prior experience, in a country where you have never worked and whose language you cannot understand is almost beyond comprehension. Jack Perkowski, Yale Class of 1970, pioneer in the Chinese private equity market and author of the new book, Managing the Dragon: How I'm Building a Billion Dollar Business in China, did exactly this in China in 1994, building ASIMCO Technologies into a $500 million components company with 17 plants in China and offices in the US, UK and Japan. Jack will provide his unique insights into the ways in which China's different, and lower, cost perspective is affecting its cost structure, the development of its markets and technological innovation, and how these factors will have a profound impact on the way all industries operate around the globe.

Rosalind disguises herself as a frat dude named Corey and learns Orlandos true feelings for her. But things get tricky when Corey complicates the lives of three other couples at Arden. Rosalind will do anything to get Orlando, even if it means showing up at the dance as both herself and Corey.

The Public Service/Social Justice Committee of the YALE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF METROPOLITAN NEW YORK is proud to call on volunteers to help out approximately 750 fellow New Yorkers that seek a warm meal and other assistance from this soup kitchen.  Volunteers will put meals on trays, hand out coffee & water, clean trays and distribute clothes.  At 3:00, volunteers will clean the tables & chairs and sweep the floors.

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes, like a t-shirt and jeans, as well as closed shoes and a cap (otherwise, you will need to wear a hairnet).   Also, be proud to wear YALE logo attire!

Children 14 and older may volunteer with a parent/guardian.

Your help is greatly needed, especially during this challenging time.  Following the event, volunteers will  unwind at Heartland Brewery in Union Square (35 Union Square).  We look forward to seeing you.

Julia Cameron's Love in the DMZ, will be in New York for two readings, October 21 and 23, both at 3:00 pm at the Actors Temple Theatre, 339 W. 47th Street, 10036, between 8th and 9th avenues.The play won several awards in its run in Los Angeles and is looking to come to New York. It is a play in letters set during the Vietnam War,  with deep parallels for current events.

DWIGHT HALL HOSTS COMMUNITY SING OCT. 23

Free and open to the public

NEW HAVEN - Dwight Hall, the Center for Public Service and Social Justice at Yale, will host its first-ever Community Sing on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at 7 p.m. at Dwight Hall Chapel, 67 High St., New Haven.

All are welcome to enjoy free hot apple cider, music from many traditions, and a chance to celebrate and promote service and justice work in New Haven.

The event is free and open to the public and will be facilitated by Micah Hendler, a Yale undergraduate who spent the summer studying traditional music in Senegal. Hendler will teach participants four to five simple songs from around the world. Following this, guests are invited to linger over cider. No musical experience is necessary, said Mari Oye, a Yale student helping to organize the event. Just enthusiasm and a desire for fellowship.

Dwight Hall hopes to make Community Sings a regular event, and encourages donations to benefit Shelter Now! a campaign dedicated to reopening the New Haven Overflow Shelter.
 

Oxfam Action Corps NYC will be hosting a free screening of Sisters on the Planet, a documentary highlighting the effects of climate change on women worldwide, and a diverse discussion on climate change and what people can do here in the New York area to protect the most vulnerable communities from its impacts.  Food and beverages will be provided. Dwight Hall and the Chaplain's Office will be welcoming a former Freedom Rider, Rev. Reginald Green, who is excited about meeting students and sharing his story. Green was arrested in Mississippi in 1961, when he was 21 years old, for participating in the rides meant to test the Supreme Court case that ruled racial segregation in public transportation illegal. He is in Connecticut to be a part of a New Haven Library sponsored event around a book and photographic exhibit about Freedom Riders and civil rights workers from the early 1960's.
