About the Game Theory Academy

Game Theory Academy (GTA) is an emerging nonprofit organization based in Oakland, CA. GTAs mission is to help young people involved in the justice system, child welfare system or street economy envision alternatives for themselves through reward-based programs that teach money management and business decision making skills.  The core of GTA is a unique financial literacy curriculum that applies the basic concepts of economics and decision analysis to the context of young peoples individual life decisions about money, relationships and education.

MBA curricula are designed to teach students to become successful by making decisions that maximize value. Young people in the juvenile justice system, for instance, make life or death decisions without any frameworks like those taught to MBA students. Game Theory Academy is a safe space for young people to reflect on their decisions by tapping into their inherent knowledge of their environment and enhancing it with decision-making tools. Participants sketch and analyze their own tradeoffs and over time envision alternatives and make better choices.

I'm excited to invite all Yalies to the launch event for The Cinematics, the new division of The Film Society of Lincoln Center geared towards members ages 21-39.  The event is this Friday, October 2nd, at 9pm with a screening and after party to Lars Von Trier's ANTICHRIST (one of the most talked about and controversial films at Cannes).  The special guest will be the film's star, the renowned actor Willem Dafoe.

As you may know, the Film Society of Lincoln Center (http://www.filmlinc.com/) is an incredible organization for both film and New York, not only hosting countless special screenings and events, but more importantly, for the past 47 years, The New York Film Festival (arguably among the top ten festivals of the year).  This year's festival is taking place now.

Judging from the Film Society's premiere party on Monday for the new Michael Moore movie, the party will be fantastic, and a great introduction to the group, The Film Society, and 150 other members our age.

Please kindly be advised that as tickets will be issued, you must RSVP to:

We are looking for volunteers to assist with the many tasks that need to be done to make this event a success.  Registration starts at 8 am for the conference (any morning people out there?) and the concert ends at 9:30 pm, so we can use any time that you can give during the day or evening.  Lunch is 12 - 1 and dinner is 5 - 6:30 pm so we will need assistance around those times to distribute meals.  We need people to man the registration table (4 or 5 from 8- 9:30 am and then 2 for the rest of the conference), people to assist the VIP guests with whatever they need, box office people (5 - 7 pm) and ushers (6- 9:45 pm) for the show as well as a couple "runners" to assist backstage and in the room reserved for the performers.  There are many other jobs available.  Let us know when you can be there, and we will find something for you to do.  Also, if anyone is especially good with AV Equipment please let us know.  If you have a car and are willing to provide a ride to or from the concert or conference for a speaker or a performer, also let us know.  We appreciate any time that you can donate to this worthy cause.  Certificates will be given on request to those that need proof of community service hours.

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative seeks volunteers to help plant 600 native grass plants at this native plant restoration site near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The site is being restored in conjunction with the installation of the interim route for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway on Kent Avenue & Williamsburg Street. It is physical work, but fun and satisfying because it will transform the experience of this area fro interim greenway users. Bring gloves, sturdy shoes and lunch if you want. We'll provide water, bananas and GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) to keep you going. You will also receive a free Users Guide to the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a waterproof and sweatproof pocket map that shows the planned and interim routes that you can explore.

The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway is a project to implement a 14-mile long greenway from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge Brooklyn where it will connect to existing  greenways around Brooklyn's waterfront that stretch nearly to Kennedy Airport. The greenway will include separate paths for bikes and pedestrians and continuous landscaping in most locations. The project is a commnity based initiative that the City has committed to build.

Page 73 Productions (Executive Directors Liz Jones '96 and Asher Richelli '97),  is pleased to present, in collaboration with New Georges, the world premiere of CREATURE by Heidi Schreck, directed by Leigh Silverman. Performances begin Tuesday, October 27tn and run through Saturday, November 21st at the Ohio Theater, 66 Wooster Street in Soho. Page 73 is dedicated to developing and producing the works of early-career playwrights. Be among the first ever to see this exciting premiere play.

England, 1401.   After being pestered by devils for more than half a year, Margery Kempe  new mother, mayors daughter, and proprietress of a highly profitable beer business is liberated from her torment by a vision of Jesus Christ in purple robes.

But should the new Margery with her fasting and her weeping and her chastity fixation be trusted?  Or should she be burned with the other heretics?  Can a woman of insatiable appetites just up and audition for sainthood?

Playwright and OBIE-winning actor Heidi Schreck conjures a collision of contemporary and medieval imaginations: a very funny, a little bit scary new play about faith and its messengers.

You are invited to Policy on the Rocks

OPEN WIDE AND SAY AHHHHH!!!!

A party and conversation about Health Care Policy.

Would a national health care program be the miracle pill this country needs, a poison pill, or just a placebo? Join us for a party and conversation with Jonathan Cohn, a senior editor at The New Republic and author of Sick: The Untold Story of Americas Health Care Crisis and the People Who Pay the Price. If lucky, we'll be celebrating a new national health policy. But more likely, Cohn will give us the scoop on the players, the problems, and possibilities for reaching a solution.

Doors open at 7pm, discussion starts at 8pm, and we'll be self-medicating all night long -- including Rusty Nail and Tetanus Shot drink specials, playing doctor, quizzes, trivia, and great conversation!

Only a $10 co-pay at the door.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Hosted by: Alvin Crawford, Ann Davlin, Eric Engler, Debra Everett-Lane, Laura Gunther, Victoria Harman, Tamara Holt, Julia Kamin, Charlene Kuo, Jen Lane, Risa Levine, Molly Martin, John Neffinger, Danielle Noto, Eloise Paul, Nicole Poindexter, Atif Qadir, Lucy Riederer, Ivy Shyu, Juny Sridhara.

Policy on the Rocks is an event series of citizenJoe, a multi-partisan nonprofit that promotes awareness and open dialogue on national policy issues. What's our formula for Policy on the Rocks? Grab a hip venue, toss in a crowd of young urbanites (conservatives, liberals and 'tweeners), add in experts and a splash of friendly policy talk and shake!

When:   October 24-25, 2009
Where:   Old Campus
Type:   Meeting

YHHAP’s advocacy and fundraising arm for the homeless, and I want you to join me on Saturday October 24th 9pm to 7am on Sunday to support New Haven’s homeless.

This month YHHAP is planning its second Shelter Now Sleepout fundraiser on Old Campus on the night of Saturday October 24th and we could really use your help. The sleepout fundraises by having groups that participate raise $50, or about $10 a person, for a tent for the night. The groups themselves are entertained by activities and performances all night long, include singing, speakers, performances, and s’mores. Every group that sponsors a tent will make a huge impact; last year, the Sleep Out functioned as one of our major fundraisers, and all the money went directly to the overflow shelter funds. Plus, it raised a lot of awareness (we were on the news!) and was part of the inspiration for the city of New Haven’s own similar event on the Green. Would you be willing to gather together members of your organization or some friends and sleep out with us?

So, what does it mean to participate in the Sleep Out?

  1. Email  This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript shelternowsleepout@panlists.yale.edu to let us know of your interest. We will reply with more information and a more detailed list of festivities!
  2. Get a group of people together, either as part of your organization or as a group of friends, and confirm a final list of names with us by October 18.
  3. Raise at least $50 (about $10 a person if you want five people in your tent) for each tent that you would like to rent for the night. We have several sizes of tents, so ask us if you need advice on what will be best for you. Individuals are also welcome at a donation of $10 each. Consider raising even more to benefit Shelter Now if you can!
  4. Recruit more people and spread the word.
  5. Show up and sleep out!

If you have any questions, let me know or email This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript shelternowsleepout@panlists.yale.edu! Can’t wait to see you on the 24th!

CONFERENCE INTRODUCTION:
The intent of this event is to discuss with the groups of South Asian American Muslims including Bangaldeshi, Indian and Pakistani Americans about their historical identity, their common heritage and the inherent pluralism, and respect for all, that traditionally flowed in the hearts and minds of people of South Asia .

The conference will explore the various factors and influences beyond the social fabric challenges in the “Home Countries” and in United States which may have led to some loss of this identity. Such loss may have led to a lower capacity of tolerance and mutual respect in this current era.

This conference will also converse on the challenges the South Asian American Muslims students face in college campuses nowadays when they have to maintain a balance in academia, while being offered a different new identity by religious groups in these most formative years.

Are you thinking about a job or a career in environmental advocacy?

If you are, check out the Environment America Fellowship Program. You can
learn more or apply online by clicking here:
<http://www.EnvironmentAmerica.org/jobs> www.EnvironmentAmerica.org/jobs.

Each year, our Fellowship Program offers a select number of graduating
seniors like you the training, experience and opportunity you need to make
an impact and become a leader in the environmental movement. Together with
our experienced staff, you can work on campaigns to build the kind of
cleaner, greener future that so many of us want for our planet.

Of course, actually making a real difference can be tough.

For example, we want to help build a new clean energy economy through new
policies in Washington and in the states - but the coal industry is fighting
hard to stop us. We want to reduce our dependence on oil and shrink our
carbon footprint by reducing the pollution we create by burning fossil fuels
- but the oil companies are resisting. We want to protect and preserve the
Grand Canyon, our national forests, and other places we love - but mining
companies, timber companies and big developers have other ideas.

That's where you come in. The Environment America Fellowship Program hires
and trains people like you to help us better document the problems, more
forcefully advocate solutions, educate more members of the public, organize
broader and stronger coalitions, and mobilize more people to take action.
These exact strategies and tactics help us win in state capitols around the
country and in Washington D.C. - even when we're up against the most
powerful opponents.

There's much more to talk about, of course. To learn more or apply, visit
our Web site at  <http://www.environmentamerica.org/jobs>

Columbia's Wien Stadium was featured in Sports Illustrated as one of the most beautiful places in the country to watch a football game.

We are organizing a section in the visitor stands, as well as a mini-tailgate before the game at noon.  Just $10 for the ticket + mini-tailgate (with some refreshments) if you register this week... still just $15 after that!  What a deal!  We'll send out the meetup/tailgate location closer to gametime.
