GATHER! (your musical group - FOOT gang - Harvest crew - extracurricular squad - best buddies - religious group - athletic team - cousins and grandparents) and Join the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project on Saturday, October 16th, in raising money to keep New Havens women and children homeless shelters, Life Haven and New Haven Home Recovery open this winter! We will spend the night sleeping outside on Old Campus, in solidarity with those who do not have homes of their own, and in the excellent company of each other. YHHAP will provide tents for sleeping, entertainment for grooving, and pancakes in the morning for eating; participants will support Shelter Now through monetary donations, and by raising awareness of the issue of homelessness in New Haven.

THE NITTY-GRITTY

  • Date/Time: 9pm on Saturday, October 16th until whenever you roll out of your sleeping bag on Sunday, October 17th
  • Donation: YHHAP provides tents of many sizes to groups for a suggested minimum donation of $50.
  • Participation: You do not have to Sleepout to enjoy the night! A suggested minimum donation of $5 gets you general admission to the nights activities!

THE FESTIVITIES

  • Contra-dancing (Never contra-danced? You are instructed exactly where to put your feet, arms, torso, and subsequently lose your head in mindless joy for free movement, bluegrass music, and kooky group dance steps). See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9L0dz3qmsc.
  • Community Sing/Jamming Bring your instrument(s), uninhibited and unapologetic singing voice, and heart/soul!
  • Smores Never had a smore? Thats a shame - come make one at a fire pit!
  • Pancake Breakfast Yum!
  • Awards To the group with the best-decorated tent and most money raised!

THE CAUSE

Shelter Now is a student-run campaign that raises political awareness and money to make sure that every resident of New Haven is provided shelter in the winter. Shelter Now began in the fall of 2008 in response to the closing of the Cedar St. Overflow Shelter, leaving 125 men without a place to stay at night. Since that time we, along with community partners, have mobilized to raise over $70,000 in two years.

This semester, we hope to raise at least $25,000 to alleviate additional cuts to homeless shelters in the city. The Sleepout is our biggest fundraising event, and by participating, you will make a real difference in shelter services for homeless individuals.

Continuing the age-old tradition, Yale will be hosting Science Saturdays this semester! This first event will be Saturday, October 2nd (this coming Saturday), and we need volunteers!

Science Saturdays is a special lecture series designed for kids and their families that brings the excitement of research and the passion of scientists to school-age children in New Haven. Yale professors present their research on an accessible, fun, and interactive level, and undergrads help out with setting up the event and leading some simple science demonstrations. Its a lot of fun - you can bring your friends (whether or not they are science majors), hang out with some extremely curious and intelligent kids, play with fuzzy stuffed animal microbes, magnets, hydrophobic sand, and more! Its very low pressure, lots of fun, and there is free food involved!

From 1968 to 1976, there was a moratorium on executions across the United States. Since then, fifteen states have enacted laws abolishing the death penalty. In 2009, Connecticut almost joined them - and in 2011, the state legislature will again take up the question of an end to capital punishment.

Please join three authorities on capital punishment for this panel discussion of our state and country's path to a criminal justice system without executions. Panelists are:
Juan Melendez, a Florida man and anti-death penalty activist who spent 17 years on death row for a crime he did not commit
- Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA
State Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield, lead sponsor of the 2009 abolition bill and Yale's representative in the Connecticut state legislature.

Sponsored by: the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty, St. Thomas More Chapel, the Yale College Democrats, University Chaplain's Office, the Afro-American Cultural Center, Black Student Alliance at Yale, Jews for Justice, Public Health Coalition, Social Justice Network, Salt of the Earth, Undergraduate Organizing Committee, Yale ACLU, Yale Amnesty, YHHAP

Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is a worldwide student organization working to improve access life-saving drugs in poor countries. Our Yale chapter works toward this goal by:

Working with Yales patent and licensing office to ensure that medicines developed at Yale are sold at affordable prices in the developing world

Engaging in advocacy at the campus and national policy levels to generate the impetus for improved drug access provisions

Lobbying universities and funding bodies increase research on neglected diseases - those that affect people too poor to attract private-sector R&D investment

UAEM is a great way to gain intimate exposure to global health activism while working with a passionate and diverse group of students. We welcome students from all schools at Yale, and are looking to increase our undergraduate membership in particular.

Please join us for a meeting / ice cream study break to learn more about how you can get involved.

fall, one during the winter and an annual Grand Rounds lecture in the spring co-sponsored by

the Womens Behavioral Health Division in the Department of Psychiatry, directed by Carolyn

M. Mazure, Ph.D. All of the lectures will be held on or near the Yale University School of

Medicine campus and will be open to the public.

Universities Allied for Essential M edicines (UAEM ) is a worldwide student organization working

to improve access life-saving drugs in poor countries. UAEM is a great way to gain intimate exposure to global health activism while working with a passionate and diverse group of students. We welcome students from all schools at Yale, and are looking to increase our undergraduate membership in particular.

This week's meeting will be Wed, 10/27 at 8pm in Rm. 124 at the Law School. We are very excited to announce that our guest will be Amy Kapczynski, founder of UAEM. We will discuss next steps with the administrators, ideas for the 10th Anniversary of UAEM's founding, and how to reach out to faculty who may support increasing access to life-saving meds.

Serve with ACE. The Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) is a two-year service program

offering college graduates the opportunity to serve as full-time teachers in under-resourced

Catholic schools across the southern United States. Because we believe that good teachers need

excellent training, ACE prepares its teachers through a fully funded Master of Education

program at the University of Notre Dame. ACE teachers spend two summers (June-July)

studying in the Master of Education program at Notre Dame and two school years (August-May)

teaching in under-resourced Catholic schools across the country. While teaching, participants

live in small communities of 4-7 members and together share the many challenges and rewards

of beginning teaching. ACE participants are encouraged to develop their own personal

spirituality in the context of community, and to share with one another the journey of becoming

committed Catholic school teachers.

After their two-year service commitment, ACE graduates contribute to diverse disciplines and

varied professions, including public policy, teaching, law, and doctoral studies in fields from

education to physics.

All are invited to a brief presentation and conversation with an ACE representative from

5:30pm-6:30pm on Thursday, October 28th in The Thomas E. Golden, Jr. Center Student

Lounge at Saint Thomas More Catholic Chapel & Center on 268 Park Street. PIZZA

Unite For Sight is the world's leader in socially responsible, effective volunteering abroad. Unite For Sight's Global Impact Corps is an immersive global health experience for students and for professionals.

For example, current Global Impact Fellows are pursuing research studies about medication management, the use of visual resources for patient education, traditional medicine practices, and patient barriers to care.
