Dwight Hall at Yale invites you to join us for an exciting community forum on urban education reform in New Haven this Thursday, November 2 from 6:00-7:30 PM in the Dwight Hall Chapel at 67 High Street. According to U.S. Department of Educations National Assessment of Educational Progress, Connecticut’s achievement gap is the largest in the nation: On average, Connecticut’s low-income eighth grade students are 2.9 grade levels behind their wealthier peers in reading and 3.7 grade levels behind in math. In New Haven, an urban district with over 70% of enrolled students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, the need for and the momentum behind school reform efforts have been and continue to be enormous. What are the most effective ways to go about reforming New Havens educational system? How has President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act affected possibilities for urban education reform on the local level? What should Yale’s role be in New Havens schools? These are all questions that will be addressed by our distinguished panelists, who bring with them a wealth of experience in the classroom, in school administration, and in educational policy-making. Speakers on the panel include 2005 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Burt Saxon, Teach for America Connecticut Executive Director Emily Barton, Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now Executive Director Alex Johnston, and Comer School Development Program Director of Teaching and Learning Camille Cooper. Jonathan Gillette, director of the Teacher Preparation and Education Studies Program at Yale, will serve as moderator for the panel. There will be significant time allotted for panelists to answer questions from the audience.
