Dr. Thomas Quinn is a professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public
Health, and director of Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health. His research
focuses on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical features of HIV/AIDS
internationally, while advocating for improved clinical education for African
physicians and implementing public health policy. Dr. Quinn was one of the
first to demonstrate that non-invasive screening for STDs by use of molecular
diagnostic assays could extend public health efforts to control STDs to
non-clinic settings. This innovative approach has led to one of the current
basic tenets of the global AIDS control program; the treatment of STDs to slow
the transmission of HIV. Dr. Quinn currently directs several field-based
programs in Africa and Asia, utilizing community-based STD treatment linked
with HIV prevention projects. Dr. Quinn is a founding member of the Academic
Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa; and the founding director of
the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health.
Presented by Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Public Health.

James Robert Brudner 83 A man of wit and compassion, outsized knowledge and curiosity, Jim valued both academic inquiry and direct action. He spent 12 years as a policy analyst for the City of New York. He also earned an MA in journalism from New York University and wrote for various publications on gay and AIDS-related topics. Jim became a member of ACT UP, the Treatment Action Group (TAG) and other organizations after the death of his twin brother, Eric, of AIDS in 1987. He worked on treatment and prevention issues with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), pharmaceutical companies and Federal agencies. In his final years he devoted much of his time to traveling the back roads of rural America with a camera. La Mama Gallery in New York mounted an exhibition of his photographs in 1997. Jim died of AIDS-related illness on September 18, 1998 at the age of 37. Through his will, he established the Brudner Prize at Yale as "a perpetual annual prize" for scholarship and activism on gay and lesbian issues.

Intercultural Internships in Bosnia
Conversation with Chris Bragdon, Founder and Executive Director for BILD - Bosnia Initiatives for Local Development

The projects of BILD began December 14, 1996, when BILD’s Executive Director, Christopher Bragdon, arrived in Tuzla from the United States. He arrived at Tuzla’s bus station with a backpack, two duffel bags, a dictionary, thousands of dollars in his boots, and an intention to help the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Four years prior in 1992, the war in Bosnia had begun leading to 10’s of thousands of innocent and defenseless civilians being murdered just because of their ethnicity. The war ended in 1996 with the intervention of 60,000 NATO-led peacekeepers as part of the Dayton Peace Accords.  Throughout the war, in news reports, he had read about the horrors being perpetrated, but he also heard about a place called Tuzla, a city known for its tolerance, a place where people of different religions and different cultures maintained solidarity even when being torn at by a violent genocidal aggression not seen in Europe since World War II.

The Tuzla Summer Institute (TSI), one of several BILD projects developed in the past 15 years, is a four week intensive educational program teaching practical skills to high school students, university students and local professionals. TSI's curriculum includes English, pedagogy, computer science, business, and organizational development. All classes are taught in English. TSI is open to students from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.  TSI's mission is to help prepare participants for their university education, their professional careers, and their roles as citizens in a secular multi-ethnic democratic society. Learn more about internship possibilities with this community-driven initiative.

Find out more about BILD here - www.bildbosnia.org and see a short video produced by Cornell University about the Tuzla Summer Institute here -

A Note from Joshua Williams:

Hi Friends,

As some of you know, I'm involved with a local homeless ministry called Agape Church for the Homeless.  This past couple of months, some of my friends who volunteer  at Agape got together to make a Christmas Album, Advent Unplugged, to raise money for Agape Church, and we're really excited about the release concert, THIS Wednesday Night (12.8) 9pm at The Afro-American Cultural Center at Yale (211 Park St.). It shouldn't be any longer than an hour. Admission is FREE. CDs will be on sale at the concert for $12 each, all money going towards Agape Church for the Homeless. For more information, visit the facebook event.

If you can't make the concert or would like to order the CD to be shipped elsewhere as a gift (we'll include a small card with every shipment explaining where the proceeds to the CD are going and how to find out more about Agape), you can pre-order now online on Tina Colon's website (she's one of the volunteers and an amazing singer!)  If you have any questions, let me know at This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript !

About Deborah
Deborah Cox has conquered the R&B, pop, and dance charts as another one of legendary record mogul Clive Davis' personal discoveries. A Grammy nominated R&B singer, she holds the Billboard all time record for the longest running number one single on the R&B chart (Nobody's Supposed to be Here), in addition to multiple number one club hits around the world. Having starred on Broadway in Elton John and Tim Rices "AIDA," playing the title role, she returns in 2011 to light up the stage as the lead  in "The Josephine Baker Story." In 2007, she paid effusive tribute to a childhood idol of hers, the beloved Dinah Washington, with her Decca album, Destination Moon, that catapulted her into the ranks of the leading jazz singers of our time. Writing another chapter in her already diverse career, the album garnered Deborah yet another Grammy Award nomination in 2008. Currently Deborah is in demand for concerts around the globe and has made recent appearances on tour in Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Barbados, the USA and her native Canada in support of her latest CD The Promise.
