Remember Feb Club?

A venerable Yale undergraduate tradition is returning for alumni -- in a slightly different form. Many will recall the days of "Feb Club," a Yale institution begun at some indeterminate point back in the twentieth century, where undergraduates warmed up the coldest, snowiest month of the year with a series of 28 (or 29) nightly parties at every corner of campus.

In 2008, the tradition is being reborn with a new theme: 29 nights, 29 cities, 29 parties. Each night of February 2008, alums from various classes will host a get-together for local alumni of all ages at an area bar, restaurant, club or private residence. All alums are invited, and it will be a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new friends with other alums living in your area. All 29 nights have been scheduled in cities from Seattle to Paris, Los Angeles to Atlantic City, the Upper West Side to Soho, and all points in between.

Attend this Returned Peace Corps Volunteers panel discussion from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm on February 14th in Yale's MacMillan Center (Luce Hall), Room 203 moderated by a Peace Corps Recruiter to hear about the challenges and rewards of different experiences. Q&A with attendees will follow.

The Peace Corps will be on campus conducting interviews with Yale undergraduates departing for assignments in this summer and fall on Thursday, February 28th. To sign up for an interview, Peace Corps applications must be submitted by Tuesday, February 26th. Candidates should schedule their interviews through Yales Undergraduate Career Services.

1. Introductions - all 15 mins
   • All in attendance introduced themselves to the group.
   • A brief description of YAAMNY and the Yale club was made.
   • NY has a total 15,000 Yale alumni. Yale club services about 3,000 YAAMNY members. 
   • The Yale Club of NYC It is a full service building with hired personnel, therefore it has a service fee for using the facility and becoming a member.
   • YAAMNY has an automatic enrollment granted upon graduation. It services all 15,000 NY members currently providing Yale alumni with a free membership.
   • In the past few years, YAAMNY has been active in promoting social events that foster a sense of community in metropolitan New York.

   • Social events are a great way to connect people. However, they are not enough to serve the many interests of our members.  Reflecting upon the values that brought us to Yale and cultivated our sense of social responsibility, we need to add a new structure to make YAAMNY great.
4. Conclusions:
   
   • Remie Christ
     Key Theme:
     Think Bigger and beyond; starting with community service and social responsibility. Gave some examples of a strong local community church and their outreach towards the community. Thinking of building a structure to support and bring to realization, not just police and govern. Building connections; have our own events, yes, but also work on connecting the dots between things that are already happening.
   • My Luu:
     Explained more thoroughly the differences between a Club as a business structure and YAAMNY as a non
     profit who has a larger mission to impact the world in which we live. Consideration in partnering with the Yale Club.
     Discussion on the demographic differences between the members of the Yale Club and the active members in
     YAAMNY and what our services could be.
   • Discussion of proposed YAAMNY operational areas:
     
     • Intiatives to support Arts and Entertainment; Yaamny will not necessarily be producing most events.  Focus
       should be on connecting dots and support various alumni initiatives, endeavors and interests. Announcing events in which Yale alumni are involved.
       Other examples connecting a screenwriter with a director. Host a screenplay reading Theatre and the Arts.  Bringing people together to enjoy the humanities. Bring awareness of other existing groups: CYAN, Yale Mafia, Yale Caberet, Yale in Hollywood.
     • Lectures and Professional Development
       Building connections among alumni.  Connecting the dots. Check what is happening in other clubs = Seattle or
       other college clubs and what are they doing? Lectures on I-tunes. Targeted groups; book club
       Lectures= what type of lectures are needed. Publication to communicate events. Where would the venues be?  Can some be hosted at the Yale Club?
     • Initiatives for Public Service and Social Justice
       NYCares -Build something
       Unicef fundraising for international issues and causes
       Teach at a school for a day-  Yalies unite to teach for a day
       Graduation Day 2-3hours
       Volunteer for a day
       Yale Volunteer Day April 19th

     What is our mission as Yaamny?
     Remie:  Very important because we need to think about connecting to community to each other and back to
     Yale. Online clearing house structure empowers enablers to deliver something great.

     Alberto: We need people to curate what is out there and empower contributors.  Identify them and talk to
     them.
     My:  Encourage them to take part in the opportunity to set a new path for Yaamny. Yaamny participants express areas of interest to devote time to.

   • The group was in agreement with the March 31 and April 11-12 dates.

2. Arts and Entertainment already has a scheduled meeting March 10 and will report at the next council

1. Parag Added several posts with basic formatting easily using the section contribute links

3. The Yahoo ClubLeadership group was discussed and whether or not it solved all the potential YaleNet online collaboration needs
   • Blair suggested Yahoo was easy to use and that the document archive and bulletin board feature was potentially all that was needed
   • Parag and Alberto discussed the need for a Wiki collaborative area and "Clearing House" of information
     • For example, it would be great to have one place that linked to all documents relating to Yale Club incorporations and non-profit status.  this could include documents uploaded on yahoo, as well as resources in the clubofficers toolbox as well as links to specific content on various club websites
     • Alberto pointed out there are many subject matter areas that would benefit from organization this way, and collaborative input.  Neither of these organization or collaborative input needs are supported by Yahoo
     • Parag felt that with simplifications to the club interface on this website it could be made completely intuitive how to find content and also how to add content in the apprpriate Sections
   • Blair had to duck out but also agreed that with simplification the collaborative workspace could provide an essential service
   • everyone also agreed that having two "Yale Club Leaders" groups was suboptimal from the point of view of confusion or competing services.  Alberto stated that it coudl be possible to work with several services, and that indeed it was unavoidable that different resources would be found in different places online.  Alberto described the value however of having one page that anyone could contribute to that would link to all these places.
   • the amount of work curating such a clearing house was discussed and the need to make it as simple as possible in order to get participation was again reemphasized
4. Alberto and Parag simplified the main menu and the content on the homepage to make it as easy to understand as possible

Interested in making decisions about Dwight Hall?  Want to get a look at non-profit management?  Apply for the Dwight Hall Board of Directors! The Dwight Hall Board of Directors is the governing body ultimately responsible for the fiscal and long-term operation of Dwight Hall.  The board's membership consists of Dwight Hall alumni, Yale professors, members of the New Haven community, and seven current student board members.  Unlike the Student Executive Committee which meets multiple times per week, the board meets twice a semester; each meeting is four hours long on a Friday.  There is an overnight retreat in the fall each year.  Three student board members are graduating in the spring, so Dwight Hall Cabinet will elect three students to serve a minimum two-year commitment.

Synopsis: When the Hungarian poet Miklós Radnóti was executed and buried in a mass grave in 1944 after a two-month death march, he did not know whether his poems would survive. Eighteen months later, when his body was exhumed, a notebook was found in his coat pocket that contained his final poems. Neither Memory Nor Magic tells the story of a man who believed in the life of his poems even when he knew that he himself would not survive.

On Thursday, February 28, Keys to the Future is proud to present
masterful and engaging pianist Lisa Moore as the inaugural soloist of
our new SPOTLIGHT concert series. In honor of world-renowned composer
Frederic Rzewski's 70th birthday, Lisa will present an entire concert
of his works, culminating in the theatrical tour de force De Profundis
(1992), which includes a spoken text drawn from the prison letters of
Oscar Wilde.

"Keys to the Future: SPOTLIGHT on Rzewski" will take place Thursday,
February 28 at 8PM at Renee Weiler Concert Hall in New York. For
