Please join us for our first meeting of 2011 on Monday, February 7th!

The Development Committee is looking forward to an exciting year fulfilling its mission to promote and support the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York and its commitment to enrich the cityscape and make a meaningful contribution to our community. Our goals for the year are: to promote the YAAMNY brand to the broader Yale community, to be a forum for multi-generational and multi-class interaction, and to liaison with other Yale organizations. In addition, we are committed to raising funds to execute YAAMNYs vision and to strengthen the Association and further facilitate meaningful engagement with the larger community.

Your presence, insights, and constructive engagement are crucial to our efforts, especially since we are a young and (excuse the pun) developing committee.  We hope you join us in making the Development Committee a magnetic force!

Created just last year, the Development Committee has already become a significant presence in YAAMNY.  In 2010, we hosted the first ever (and fabulously successful) Benefit Soiree; organized a book talk with best selling author Ron Chernow; and held a spa-sporting event.

There's much more to come for 2011! We are planning another Benefit Soiree, capitalizing on the financial success and frankly-- the fun of our inaugural benefit to establish this into an annual much-anticipated event for our community.  Also, monthly dinners filled with lively conversations among alumni are in the works.  There's also work to be done on adding greater sponsorship of our news letter and events.  These are to name just a few.

We look forward to seeing you! If you plan on joining us, please send an email to Anne Moss: This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript

THE RETURN OF THE ARGONAUTS, a seminar taught by Lee Patterson, Frederick W. Hilles Professor of English, Yale University, on 10 February 2011 (6-7:30pm) at The Frick Collection.

On loan to the Frick from a private collection are two superb late fifteenth century Italian paintings depicting scenes from the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. These panels spin a complex version of this tale of adventure and revenge, revealing unexpected insights about the historical times in which they were made. With Professor Patterson, explore the relationship between literary text and image and how both are mutable over time.

Where:   People's Center

Type:   Meeting

Meeting about anti-war actions - see below - on Saturday the 19th at noon until 1pm at the People's Center (37 Howe Street).

The Endless Wars are Killing U.S.
Spring Actions to Fund Jobs, Human Needs and the Environment

We invite you to join in organizing a month of daily (March 15 to April 15 - tax day) public vigils/protests/tabling in New Haven to call for an end to the wars and to re-direct resources to local needs. We propose that different groups/organizations each take responsibility for one day (Sun., Mon., Tues., etc.) each week to be at the location and time of their choosing with the theme: The Endless Wars Are Killing U.S.: Fund Jobs, Human Needs and the Environment.

We will also put together fliers and postcards groups could use, but each group could decide itself how it wants to organize its vigil/event/action. We do want to pressure elected leaders to commit to take clear action on this - e.g., support the Frank/Paul call to cut Pentagon spending by 25%.

We are also hoping to start and close the Spring Actions with joint publicity/ gathering/ teach in /action.

The goals are:
Educate and mobilize the public about the massive cost on ongoing wars (using    National  Priorities Project, FCNL information, over $1 trillion per year for the military, with wars on Iraq and Afghanistan costing New Haven $83 million for FY 2011).

Invite people to do something concrete - send post cards, come to event, call Congress to redirect funds to human and environmental needs.

Try to generate more energy in antiwar movement, and encourage people to turn out on  April 9th in New York  for the Tax Day demonstration, or other local events.

If you're interested in participating please let us know by Feb. 4th, or if you have questions contact Chris Schweitzer or Henry Lowendorf.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 21st February 2011

ANGEL JUST-RIGHTS, Rebecca Parker (Publication date: 13 Feb 11; Biography & Autobiography, Psychology, Social Sciences, Anorexia, Mental Health).

Talented new author exposes exhilarating epic of endurance: beautifully candid, bravely sincere, witty, compelling, and astute. Launched in conjunction with NEDAwareness Week (20th 26th February 2011) and adeptly reflecting this years theme Its Time to Talk about It the World excitedly receives exclusive, highly original work of fiction. Based on a true story of one childs lost voice in Angel Just-Rights lays an astonishing story of strength: easy-to-read (far from superficial), a thought-provoking motivator, and an insightful presage for all...

Evolution of the book realisation into the debilitating extent at which broken down channels of communication, life experiences, and ingrained individualistic personality traits, have been allowed in full strength and power to render one so weak are explained by Parker in her beginning Preface. Book 1 delves into issues relating to everyday living such as dealing with strict family values, loyalty and devotion while intermittently riddling with her reader in efforts to gain the yearned-for rationality and reassurance so desperately sought. At the height of deathly battles, harrowing happenings of Book 2 raise one simple question: how can implicitly pure intentions precipitate such devastating results? A plethora of mortifyingly unhealthy, demoralising and ritualistic behaviours manifesting deeply in a single fragile life so touched by the world around her are showered, shatteringly, over the reader.

Gradually learning how coping in silence can cruelly fester, devastating consequences are hastened: eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia), post-traumatic stresses and flash-backs, self-harm, psychosis, suicidal desires, over-exercise, increasing obsessions, extreme rituals, distorted beliefs leading to incredibly debilitating afflictions to low self-esteem, mood swings, depression, hospitalisations, sectioning under Mental Health Act and excruciatingly honest accounts of associated inequitable treatments enforced. Startling, captivating, and bitterly heart-rending to the general reader, a silent sufferers solace, enlightening to friends, families and health professionals alike, in equilibrium with the theme of this book, Parkers voice adeptly portrays ironic angst exceptionally, right to the very end.

About the Author
Reading and writing have always excited Parker, previous works winning recognition and Prizes for both short stories and poetry. Sharing this unique collection of books, originally cathartic in aim, enables her to offer even a strand of hope unto any individual similarly searching for their own only voice that is allowed and to offer even a slice of solace to those continuing to hurt silently and alone. The disclosure of her story also aims to offer those enduring the last few years of this particular stretch of illness by her side, excessively long-awaited answers and an opportunity to finally embark upon healing.

Angel Just-Rights is published by Chipmunkapublishing and is now available to order online and from all good bookshops (Waterstones, Foyles, Blackwells, WHSmith, Tesco etc). For more information on Angel Just-Rights or to contact the author directly, visit wix website at RebeccaAngelParker/RebeccaAngelParker or see above.

If you are suffering alone, feeling confused or misunderstood, or concerned for a close friend or family member you care about, find this book, read it & gain strength.

On Camera Workshop for the Actor

Please email us at This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  if interested

The workshop is designed strictly to hone your acting skills for the camera.

With that goal in mind, we provide instant feedback through your recorded performance. Additionally, you walk with a DVD of your work from the current session and can access the DV tape for your use for reels or whatever. You will also be taught the basics of camera work, framing and composition.

We'll be using small pro camcorders. They're easier to use, and I've found that newbie camera ops are more able to achieve good composition with them than with the studio rigs. They allow the camera ops (often you when you're not acting) to reframe and compensate for actors' movements during a scene.

During each scene, each camera is recorded in its entirety without switching so all of your performance will be on your DVD. When played back immediately after the scene is shot, both actors will be seen on separate side by side screens. The other actors present in the workshop watch as you perform. They view your performance two ways, live and/or the live pictures from the cameras on the monitors.

Once you see your work, you'll perform again later in the evening or immediately after incorporating whatever changes you wish to make in your performance. Sometimes other participants may offer constructive comments about your work.  Depending on the number of participants, it's possible for you to do your scene several times in one evening.

All of your work will be on your DVD for you to study later or to share with other professionals you know to get their opinions on it.  Scenes should be short - around three minutes - sometimes up to five minutes but short is good.

Once we have worked together for a while, I might put a pamphlet together on how we do this that might be published. It could help other actors set up their own on camera workshop.

I want to get a group of up to 20 who'll take part when they can. Out of that 20, we might get 6 to 8 per session. We need at least four participants in any session.  Two will shoot and two will perform and then switch. Those who have performed could become camera operators or watch the monitors as others perform. There's a lot to be learned in watching others act. The short comments after scenes are played back should also be a learning experience for all participants.  If you are participating in the workshop, you'll be expected to be in for the three hour session. Please don't expect to show up just to do your scene and then leave.

Here are some answers to the many questions Ive been receiving:

The address is:

Otterson TV

251 West 30th Street

Suite 14W

NYC   10001

It currently takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7PM.

The workshop is set-up for scenes for two characters.  You will be expected to be off book.  Those that aren't will be expected to learn their lines by the following week.

Some of our screenwriters have scenes they would like to see performed and videotaped.  We'll put you in touch.

If you bring a monologue, you'll get one run through of it.

You'll be expected to participate for the 2 ½ to 3 hours of the workshop.

You will be given basic instruction in camera operation and are expected to run a camera at times during the workshop.

You will be given a DVD of you work at the end of each session.

You will do your scene and then it will be played back on side by side monitors.  You will be seen on one and your scene partner will be on the other.  The monitors will be arranged in such a way that you and your scene partner will be facing each other.

That's why I want simple blocking at the beginning.  If you want to sit, that is fine.

Keep you scenes under 5 minutes.

Those who have brought scenes for two characters and are off book will always be given preference.  It is possible for you to run your 2 character scene several times and try it different ways.

We'll often have screenwriters and filmmakers working with us who will be looking to cast their projects.

The acclaimed Yale in New York series presents the Yale Philharmonia and conductor Shinik Hahm on Monday, February 28. Come to Carnegie Hall to hear them perform four twentieth-century pieces for chamber orchestra and soloists.

Featuring the New York premiere of Frank Martin's Ballade No. 2 for flute, string orchestra, piano, and percussion, originally written for saxophone in 1939. Ransom Wilson is the soloist in this recently rediscovered version for flute.

The program opens with Ernest Bloch's Concerto Grosso No. 1 for string orchestra (1925), with Jian Liu playing the piano obbligato part. Clarinetist David Shifrin and bassoonist Frank Morelli are the soloists in the Duet-Concertino (1947) of Richard Strauss. The orchestra concludes with Alberto Ginastera's colorful Variaciones concertantes, Op. 23 (1953).
