ACF (www.alexcap.org), is an organization founded in memory of Alex Capelluto, a 20-year old Yale Junior, who was struck and killed by a truck as he was riding his bicycle back to campus after crew practice, days before starting out on a 4,000 mile bicycle ride to benefit Habitat for Humanity. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there! About the Foundation: The Alexander Capelluto Foundation (ACF) awards grants to high school and college students. Currently we are in two schools (Horace Mann Upper Division and Yale University), but as we raise more money, we will be expanding to additional universities. At Yale, it can be very difficult for students on scholarship to afford even the basics, such as a personal computers, textbooks, laboratory fees, musical instruments, cameras, art supplies. We'll provide funds to students who need help paying for costs that are associated with classes but are not covered in their financial aid packages. The next incoming class will be the first beneficiaries, and as we raise more money, we plan to expand to other Universities. At Horace Mann, we'll be giving a $2,500 grant to a high school Junior for a community service project to be implemented in the summer before senior year. Volunteer help needed this summer for Site Projects on an innovative public art installation: The basic mission of Site Projects is to bring large-scale installation art to New Haven. This year, Slovenian artist Matej Vogrinic will be working on his first U.S. Commission by installing large-replica erector parts in the Farmington Canal trail underneath Whitney Ave. He will actually start the building process during the 1st week of April and the exhibit will officially open May 19. The vision behind this project is to link the industrial development of New Haven via the Farmington Railroad with the invention of the Erector Set by AC Gilbert in the late 1800s. A link for the artist is that he most recently worked on an installation featuring 56 upturned boats in St. Luke's Church in Liverpool, England. Liverpool, incidentally, is where Gilbert first found the inspiration for the Erector set. Locals like Bill Brown (Eli Whitney Museum), Doug Rae, Allan Plattus, Dean Sakomoto and others are writing essays that will clarify some of the other links inherent in the project. The organization is looking for assistance from us in identifying students who can help the volunteer organization contact US Museums (to spread awareness of an artist who will be new to US audiences), develop signage, publicize the installation locally, assist with the actual build, and/or shoot a documentary on the installation.
