Cycling to raise awareness and save lives!

My name is Cesar Rodarte (CC '06), and I am currently training to participate in a 100-mile bike ride as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with my girlfriend, Lenore Estrada. As you may know, Lenore was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma June of 2007. She recently completed chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and we are currently waiting to find out if Lenore's cancer is gone. June 2008 is when we will find out and this coincides with our 100-mile bike ride in Lake Tahoe.

Lenore has been fortunate enough to receive great care. While chemotherapy and radiation therapies have saved many lives, a cure still doesn't exist for everyone. Cancer research has made big strides, but there is a lot that still can be done. Participating as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is one way in which I am trying to make a difference.

We are raising funds to help stop Hodgkin's lymphoma from taking more lives. I'm completing this event in honor of Lenore. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated. The Apology of Socrates features a theatrical solo performance by Emmy Award winner Yannis Simonides (Yale '69, Yale Drama '72) and is directed by Broadway and television veteran Loukas Skipitaris. Oscar and Tony Award winner Theoni Vahliotis Aldredge is the costume designer, with percussive support by Caryn Heilman, a Paul Taylor veteran dancer-musician. The English translations are by Yannis Simonides and Loukas Skipitaris. This is a presentation by Elliniko Theatro (www.ellinikotheatro.org) in collaboration with Theatron Inc.

The Apology is a delightful and quite humorous dramatization of the famous philosopher's defense while on trial for his life in Athens, ancient Greece. In the Apology, reported to us by Socrates' student, Plato, the wise man of Athens firmly defends himself - rather than apologizing in the contemporary sense - against politically motivated accusations of not believing in the gods of the state and corrupting the Athenian youth.

The production is sponsored by the Yale Class of 1969, and, at Yannis' request, is for the benefit of the Yale Alumni Fund. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this special event! The Leonia Chamber Musicians perform a romantic concert of Roussel, von Weber, Villa-Lobos and Brahms in the beautiful acoustic of All Saints Episcopal Church in Leonia, N.J. In 1999, in response to international concern over sexual tourism to Southeast Asia, the Japanese Diet outlawed child prostitution and child pornography. These laws then became directed primarily at enjo kosai, or compensated dating between middle aged men and junior high school girls. In the wake of 9/11, the Japanese cabinet radically shifted counterterrorism policy towards more military solutions. Think Global, Fear Local: Sex, Violence, and Anxiety in Contemporary Japan, a new book by David Leheny, considers the relationship between these policies and examines the unintended consequences of attempts to enforce international norms at a national level. Dr. Leheny, Henry Wendt III '55 Professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, will speak about the implications for Japan of the relationship between international security norms and expectations of the proper coercive role of governments.

 Richard Bradley, class of '86, will release his new book, "The Greatest GameThe Yankees, The Red Sox, and the Playoff of '78," published by Simon and Schuster, on March 18. The book, Bradley's third, tells the story of the legendary 1978 pennant race between Boston and New York, culminating in Bucky Dent's famed home run in a one-game playoff at Fenway on October 2nd. Readings are in the process of being scheduled, but you can find the book at any bookstore or Amazon and Barnes & Noble.com.

   • Aaron reported on ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT. Committee has ID'd two tracks they plan to pursue: 1) supporting existing groups that are already active or are currently forming (e.g. Yale on Broadway) and 2) sponsoring YAAMNY's own arts-related events. Hugo's screenplay reading is 1st proposed YAAMNY sponsored event; Alberto is working on venue/date.
   • Alberto noted that in all operational areas there are questions of the content specific to that area, as well as logistical issues (such as those related to event planning & marketing) that will likely cut across all operations. Council will need to continue to work on how to coordinate these. Jenny & My noted that the DC club & AAYA (sp?) both have event check lists that may be useful.
   • Amanda & Tom reported on SERVICE. Amanda had posted an RFP on the website, asking alums to suggest projects that YAAMNY might wish to sponsor. Most intriguing is a group in Brooklyn that rehabs existing buildings for social service organizations. Long discussion ensued about overall objectives of this initiative: fewer long-term projects or more short term (one-off) opportunities? Work with recognized groups or highlight newer (and perhaps struggling) nonprofits? What are the goals? 1) Yalies working together - creates community; 2) tie-in to Yale values (such as education); 3) facilitating Yalies working in nonprofits who need to find volunteers. Consensus was that Amanda & Tom should work on planning a one-day project for late spring as pilot; will reconsider other options later.
   • SOCIAL/NETWORKING: My is working on a joint Ivy event for late April. More people are needed to work in this area. Doreen agreed to join (but not lead!) the cause.
   • GOVERNANCE: Alberto has been to the bank, and located the remaining funds which will be returned to YAAMNY from the Comptroller's office (approx. $4,000). Marguerita is working on corporate status issues.
3. March 31 open forum event: great response so far, will be enhanced by reminder broadcast email scheduled for March 24. Advisory council's role at the event is to "work the room", talk about YAAMNY's new initiatives, and basically build interest in what YAAMNY is working towards.
4. RETREAT on April 11/12. Venue & date chosen by executive committee group based on calendar (any later would end up being next fall).
5. The speaker, Lionel Ketchian, is the founder of the Happiness Club organization (www.happinessclub.com), will speak about the value, importance and simplicity of happiness in his presentation called: 15 Important Things For Your Happiness!  Bring your questions about happiness to the meeting with you and find some answers!

John E. Pepper, Jr. '60 will deliver a keynote address to the Yale and New Haven communities as Dwight Hall's Third Curran Distinguished Mentor at 2:00pm on Wednesday, March 26. The event is open to the general public and will be immediately followed by a reception co-sponsored by Silliman College in the Dwight Hall Library. The theme of the talk is "Doing good while doing well".

As part of his two-day visit, which will also include small group meetings with Dwight Hall student member organizations and a dinner with Dwight Hall leadership, Pepper will publicly address the Yale and New Haven communities in Dwight Hall Chapel. Pepper's wealth of experience makes his address relevant to students and others with diverse interests from different walks of life. Following his successful 39-year career at Proctor & Gamble, where he filled various positions including chief executive officer, Pepper is the current chairman of the board of The Walt Disney Company. He is the former Yale vice president of finance and administration and the current co-chair of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, a museum in downtown Cincinnati that aims to inspire action to defend freedom today. He has been consistently active in public service and social justice issues, helping found the nationally acclaimed Cincinnati Youth Collaborative in the late 1980s and chairing the 1994 Greater Cincinnati United Way campaign. According to Pepper himself, the event is relevant for everybody. "No matter what ones career is," he says, "there is a role that you can and must play in social and public policy."

The Curran Distinguished Mentor program was generously endowed by William Curran '49 in memory of his wife, Jane. The program aims to provide students access to role models who embody Dwight Hall's mission in their professional lives. Past Distinguished Mentors include former Mayor of Baltimore Kurt Schmoke '71 and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) President Frances Beinecke '71.

Yale Latino/as have never been afraid to take on the causes that matter most to them whether they be personal, local, or global in scope. As Latina/o Yalies we can continue to leverage the opportunities and resources we have available to us through our relationship with Yale in order to make positive changes in the world. As we do this, it is useful to remember that professionals need not stop being activists and activists always benefit from being professional (i.e. experts) in their endeavors. During this one day symposium Alumni and Current Students will have an opportunity to explore the relationship between professionalism and activism as well as the causes that are most critical to us as individuals but also as a growing and interconnected community.

The AYA has embarked on an ambitious strategic planning process, and alumni programs in major metropolitan areas like New York are a major focus. There are dozens of alumni groups in New York, including both the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York (YAAMNY) and the Yale Club of New York City on Vanderbilt Avenue. This evenings program will focus in particular on YAAMNY, which includes the almost 14,000 Yale alumni in New York. We need your input to  help determine how we can best invest AYA resources to benefit both alumni and the community and to help develop and support YAAMNY programs.
