5683 miles is the distance between Tel Aviv and New York. From this distance, Yael Ben-Zion (LL.M. '01, JSD '04) has been looking back at her homeland for the last ten years, considering the meaning of normal life in that charged place. In repeated visits to Israel, using medium format film camera, Ben-Zion has created nuanced and layered images that capture the texture of Israelis day-to-day life, shifting between interiors and exteriors, portraits and still life. The images focus on mundane details that carry symbolic value and invite contemplation on displacement and longing for home; they offer a poetic reflection on the way people spend their lives. The photographs are personal and intimate, but they also allude to the complex political climate in Israel and question its emotional and social consequences.

The exhibition at 92nd Street Y includes 20 large-scale photographs from her book 5683 miles away and will coincide with the launch of its US release. The book is a recent nominee for the German Book Prize and one of Photo-Eye's Best Books of 2010.

Ben-Zion was born in Minneapolis, MN in 1973 and raised in Israel. She is a graduate of the International Center of Photography's General Studies Program. Prior to taking up photography, Yael had a diverse legal career, which included pursuing LL.M. and J.S.D. degrees at the Yale Law School.  It was at Yale that she took her first formal photography class. Ben-Zion's work has been exhibited in the United States and in Europe. In 2007, her photograph Crash was selected for the cover of American Photography 23. She currently lives in NYC.

PLEASE JOIN US FOR OUR NEXT DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING!

The Development Committee is looking forward to an exciting year fulfilling its mission to promote and support the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York and its commitment to enrich the cityscape and make a meaningful contribution to our community. Our goals for the year are: to promote the YAAMNY brand to the broader Yale community, to be a forum for multi-generational and multi-class interaction, and to liaison with other Yale organizations. In addition, we are committed to raising funds to execute YAAMNYs vision and to strengthen the Association and further facilitate meaningful engagement with the larger community.

Your presence, insights, and constructive engagement are crucial to our efforts, especially since we are a young and (excuse the pun) developing committee.  We hope you join us in making the Development Committee a magnetic force!

There are many new projects for 2011! We are planning another Benefit Soiree at an exciting new venue, capitalizing on the great success of our inaugural benefit to establish this into an annual much-anticipated event for our community.  Also, a fascinating book release event about restoring common sense and personal responsibility in America.  Additionally, there is work to be done to add greater sponsorship of our news letters and events.  These are to name just a few.

Created just last year, the Development Committee has already become a significant presence in YAAMNY.  In 2010, we hosted the first ever (and fabulously successful) Benefit Soiree; organized a book talk with best selling author Ron Chernow; and held a spa-sporting event.

We look forward to seeing you! If you plan on joining us, or if you have any questions,
please send an email to Anne Nakaoka  Moss:

The "Celebrating Sinatra" Band
For The Salon's 10th Anniversary extravaganza, we've put together a band that brings together four legendary musicians who played and recorded with FRANK SINATRA, among many of the "greats" from the 20th Centuary.

BUCKY PIZZARELLI - guitar
BUcky PizzarelliLegendary guitarist who performed with Sinatra at the White House and toured with him throughout the US. Pizzarelli also played and recorded with Tony Bennett, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Kate Smith, Sarah Vaughn, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney and Zoot Sims, among others. He played for years with Doc Severinsen on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

For more than six decades, the legendary Bucky Pizzarelli has had a stellar career, appreciated by  swing musicians in particular. Self-taught, Pizzarelli has long been a master of the seven-string  guitar. The complete jazz musician, he has been a fixture in jazz and the studios since the early 50s. The list of big bands and vocalists with whom Bucky has performed and recorded reads like a veritable Who's Who of Jazz: Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims, Bud Freeman, and Stephane Grappelli,  among others. Pizzarelli's complete list of credits is staggering and includes greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller, Antonia Jobim, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Roberta Flack, Lena Horne, Charles Mingus, Carly Simon, Garry Mulligan, Buddy Rich, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Milt Hinton, Lionel Hampton, Hank Jones, Wes Montgomery, Lou Rawls, and Rufus Wainright, among many others. Bucky is the father of jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli and upright bassist Martin Pizzarelli.  More information - Bucky Pizzarelli (Wikipedia)

Jerry BrunoJERRY BRUNO - bass
Played with Frank Sinatra over a number of years beginning in 1979, including at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall as well as on tours throughout Brazil and the US. Jerry was an active studio musician, recording with Don Costa, Tony Bennett, Stevie and Eddie, and many others. He also toured and performed with greats such as Liza Minelli, Tommy Dorsey and Louis Prima. Jerry met Bucky Pizzarelli in 1948 when they were both playing in Vince Monroe's big band; they have been playing together ever since.

DEREK SMITH - piano
A Grammy-nominated pianist recognized as one of New York's top studio musicians, and probably the world's most recorded commercial/jazz pianist. Derek Smith has performed with a who's who of show business from Sinatra to Pavarotti, from Dizzy Gillespie to Benny Goodman.

Derek SmithDerek Smith began his career in his native England, playing his first job for pay when he was fourteen. Someone rolled a piano out into the street, and he played for VE Day celebrations. Over his parents' protestations, he joined John Dankworth's band, when Cleo Laine was the female vocalist. Smith also began performing and recording for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), but soon realized the place for him, professionally, was America.

Smith came to the United States with no job awaiting him. Fourteen days after arriving in New York, he recorded with the Modern Jazz Quartet. One of his first engagements was working with his trio opposite Mel Torme and Ella Fitzgerald at Basin Street East in New York. He joined Benny Goodman's band in 1961 and was pianist on Benny Goodman - The Swing Era, released by Time/Life Records.

Derek Smith met Doc Severinsen when both were contracted to play a society gig. Later, when Severinsen was named leader of the NBC Orchestra, the "Tonight Show" Band, he called Smith to be the pianist. Smith played with the band for seven years while continuing to record daily in New York studios and work with Benny Goodman. When the "Tonight Show" moved to the West Coast, Smith opted to stay in New York and continue his career as a 'first call' studio musician.

Smith led his own band on NBC's "Musical Chairs" game show after he left the "Tonight Show." After "Musical Chairs" was cancelled, he began concentrating on jazz concert performances while continuing to record. Smith's trio album. Love for Sale, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989. Smith has 20 albums as leader to his credit in the United States and Japan. Described by critics as "fiery," "passionate," and having "an evil left hand," he is a frequent headliner at jazz festivals around the world.

Probably the world's most recorded commercial/jazz pianist, Smith may be heard on recordings ranging from the popular Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick and Steve Lawrence/Eydie Gorme tracks, recorded in the 1960s, to jazz albums with Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy deFranco, Louis Bellson, Milt Hinton and Clark Terry. The material Smith has recorded also includes move sound tracks, among them Woody Alien's Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence.

The roster of notables with whom Derek Smith has performed includes a "Who's Who" of show business, from Frank Sinatra to Luciano Pavarotti, from Placido Domingo to Robert Palmer. Lyricist Sammy Cahn, a good friend until his death, comedian Steve Alien, and many other performers have frequently called upon his accompanying and conducting skills.
More information - Derek Smith (Wikipedia)

JIMMIE YOUNG - drums
Recorded drums on Sinatra's TRILOGY ALBUM "Present" which famously includes "New York, New York." Jimmie also played and recorded with everyone from Barry Manilow to The Village People, and was a top studio musician.

Jimmie YoungJIM YOUNG first appeared in NYC in 1959 with jazz artists Marian & Jimmy McPartland, Jack Teagarden, Bud Freeman, in jazz festivals opposite Dave Brubeck's Quartet, and live performances opposite Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Gene Krupa, Cozy Cole and Buddy Rich.

He has also played live with many well known singing acts such as Dihann Carroll, Vic Damone, Julius LaRosa, Florence Henderson, Nancy Wilson, Jack Jones and Gloria Lynne.

The 70's began Jim's fulltime recording career. His first hit record was Everybody Plays the Fool (The Main Ingredient). He also appeared with many recording stars such as Phoebe Snow, Stevie Wonder, Art Garfunkle, Starland Vocal Band, Silver Convention, and Roberta Flack.

On Saturday, February 19, the House of Representatives voted to make huge cuts in this year's budget. Poverty-fighting, cost-effective programs - which make up less than one percent of the US budget - were sharply cut.  In particular, key programs that fight AIDS, malaria and hunger in poor countries were cut by 40%.  Prof Mugyenyi will talk from personal experience as a leading Ugandan physician about how he has been able to save thousands of patients' lives through receiving US foreign aid to fight AIDS and detail the potentially devastating humanitarian impact of the proposed cuts.

Speaker Bio:

Professor Peter Mugyenyi is widely recognized as being a leading HIV/AIDS clinician and advocate for the sustainable provision of adequate funds to provide universal access to
anti-retroviral drugs.  He is a paediatrician, HIV specialist and the Director and Founder of the Ugandan Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC).  JCRC was the first entity providing anti-retroviral drugs to people living with HIV in Uganda.  Mugyenyi was a critical advocate for the creation of the Presidents' Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and JRCR has been a significant beneficiary of funds from PEPFAR.  Prof Mugyenyi is also on the board of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dear community-service minded folks,

IRIS is New Haven County's refugee resettlement agency.  Our mission is to help refugees and other displaced people establish new lives, regain hope, and contribute to the vitality of Connecticut's communities.  Since refugees come to this country and are immediately thrown into poverty, we have diverse services to help refugees thrive during their first months and years in the US.  One particular service is our weekly food pantry service.  Each week's food pantry service is essential to many of the newly arrived refugee families, and many could not afford to feed their families without it.  To help the families as much as possible, we have been bring increasing amounts of food to the IRIS office to distribute to our clients.

We are looking for motivated volunteers to help us continue to meet the needs of refugees.  On Tuesday afternoons, the mighty task of hauling over 2000 pounds of food up the stairs has become more and more difficult for just a couple volunteers to take one.  We would love to have more volunteers helping IRIS on Tuesday afternoons from 2:15-3:45pm.  This is a great opportunity to get a great workout (free!) and simultaneously give back to the community.

Please let me know if you are interested in helping!  My email address is This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript , and I'd be happy to give you bus directions to get to the IRIS office.

Best wishes!
~Margaret

Relentlessly daring playwright Wallace Shawn returns to The New Group to continue his vibrant collaboration with Scott Elliott (Aunt Dan and Lemon, The Fever, Threepenny Opera). This comedic masterpiece of marital strife recounts the day that Marie (Marisa Tomei) finally resolves to tell her charming and impossibly positive husband Bruce (Frank Whaley) that she's had enough.

Each of us is granted at birth the wonderful gift of consciousness-- we can think, we feel, and we try to understand things. But there's too much going on, we are horribly confused, and in our confusion we seek greater clarity by forming a bond with another human being. The search for understanding continues, but it's even more complicated.

- Wallace Shawn

Regulation is a major topic in developed financial markets and key to the development of supportive environments for microfinance in developing countries. Please join the FWA for a discussion of how regulation promotes or hinders microfinance in the BRIC countries. The regulatory environment can have a significant impact on how microfinance institutions operate and how they provide a range of financial services to those who have limited or no access. We will hear from leading microfinance experts on what has worked to support the development of microfinance and if there are lessons to be shared or learned, especially given the recent crises in India and the prospects for tremendous growth in China. We will learn why microfinance has been more challenging in Russia and less prevalent in Brazil. Can microfinance succeed in these large critical markets?

Topics for Discussion

  • A brief overview of the individual regulatory environments for microfinance in Brazil, Russia, India and China
  • Has the regulatory environment in each of these countries helped or hindered the growth of microfinance and the impact it has had in the local communities?
  • What will be required of the regulatory organizations and the microfinance institutions going forward to ensure the success and proliferation of microfinance, with its many benefits, long into the future? What are the major challenges today with the regulatory regimes?
