The prominent Viennese-born American cellist Harry Wimmer returns to the Thalia Theater on April Fool’s Day with a brand new program that dares to bring some serious levity to an otherwise substantial classical music presentation. Immigration issues have been all over the news and even in the U.S. Congress these past few weeks. What does this mean for the close to 10,000 undocumented immigrants living right here in New Haven? Dwight Hall invites the Yale community and the New Haven community at large to join us for an engaging and dynamic discussion on what life is like for New Haven's large immigrant population and on the current state of immigrant rights and services in this city. The event will feature a panel of experts and activists who have done extensive work on the issue at the local level, including Kica Matos of JUNTA for Progressive Action, New Haven Alderwoman Maria Reyes Rivera from Fair Haven, local immigrant activist John Lugo of of Unidad Latina en Acción, New Haven Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Smuts, and Yale American Studies Professor Alicia Schmidt-Camacho. The mighty Swell Mob returns to the Knitting Factory on Saturday April 15. The indiepoprock band consists of Seth Searls (MC 98), Keith Meatto (ES 97), Mike Espar (SM 98) and special guest Nathan You (SY 97). Those of you who did time in New Haven in the late 90s might recognize 2/3 of Blue Fountain Diner, a.k.a. BFD, mainstays at Toad's, Spring Flings and Naples (R.I.P.), among other Elm City venues. What to expect? Spastic stage antics and hilarious, quasi-intellectual lyrics abound when Swell Mob comes to town...yes, fellow music lovers, these lads are just splendid! When was the last time you heard a band use "rhombus" in a song AND get away with it? Or quote Othello in a paean to that long-misunderestimated but nonetheless noble vocation, that of Jeeves and Mr. Belvedere, indeed, that of the BUTLER? THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA OF YALE, the orchestra of the Yale University School of Music, will perform in Carnegie Hall on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at 8:00 pm. All the performers in the orchestra-and in the School of Music - are graduate-level concert artists who have come to Yale after graduating from the world's major conservatories and universities, such as the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute, the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music in London, Korea's major music schools, and the Paris, Beijing, and New England conservatories. The program -- "New Era Dance" by Pulitzer prize-winning faculty composer and Yale alumnus Aaron Jay Kernis Cello Concerto No. 1 by Dmitri Shostakovich with soloist Jian Wang '88, who came to the world's attention in 1979 as the 10-year-old cello prodigy in the documentary "Mao to Mozart," and who has since performed and recorded with the most renowned international orchestras and conductors. Symphony No. 2 by, Jean Sibelius Written in 1902, this beautiful work is the most popular and most recorded of all the symphonies by the great Finnish master. The conductor for the program is Shinik Hahm who, before becoming music director of the orchestra in 2004, was director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra for a decade. Hahm is also music director of the Daejeon Philharmonic in Korea, and has served as director of the Abilene and Green Bay Symphony Orchestras in this country.
