From sushi and karaoke to martial arts and technoware, the currency of made-in-Japan cultural goods has skyrocketed in the global marketplace during the past decade. The globalization of Japanese "cool" is led by youth products: video games, manga (comic books), anime (animation) and cute characters that have fostered kid crazes from Hong Kong to Canada. Drawing on popular examples from Pokémon to Sailor Moon, Anne Allison speaks about the popularity of Japanese goods today, and the relationship of these products to the cultural and historical context in which they were both developed and consumed. Dr. Allison is Professor and Chair of the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Duke University, and author of Millennial Monsters: Japanese Toys and the Global Imagination.

Founded in the Fall of 2007, Oye is Yale's first Latino spoken word group. Based on weekly workshops that explore various topics relating to Latino identity, Oye welcomes students from diverse backgrounds to come together and write, discuss, and perform. After finishing its first show, "Se Habla Latino," featuring 15 pieces from its 10 members, Oye is looking forward to its promising future as an outstanding performance group in the Yale Latino community.

 
Suggested donation of $25 to benefit the Yale Latino Cultural Center Fund, which provides support for the Latino Cultural Center, including the Latino Alumni Prize, which honors two graduating seniors who have shown an outstanding commitment to the Latino community at Yale while maintaining a high level of academic excellence.

Jon Butler grew up in rural Minnesota and received both his BA and PhD in history from the University of Minnesota. His books include Awash in a Sea of Faith:  Christianizing the American People (1990), Becoming America: The Revolution Before 1776 (2000), and Religion in American Life: A Short History, co-authored with Grant Wacker and Randall Balmer (2003).  He is the editor-in-chief of the forthcoming Oxford Companion to Religion in America, and is currently writing a book about religion in New York City between 1870 and 1960 tentatively titled God in Gotham:  The Miracle of Religion in Modern Manhattan.

Late-Edo-period design in both textiles and lacquerware is distinguished by a penchant for near-invisible tiny details and minutely worked techniques that situate value in time and skill rather than precious materials. This program discusses the philosophical and practical background to iki -- an understated aesthetic that characterizes much of Shibata Zeshin's work -- and examines the beauty of hidden design in Japanese and Western culture. Panelists Sharon S. Takeda, Senior Curator and Department Head, Costumes and Textiles at Los Angeles County Museum and distinguished independent scholar Terry Satsuki Milhaupt join curator Joe Earle in a dialogue on a variety of topics, including the impact of Western design on Japan and, reciprocally, Japan's influence on the West. Picturehouse and The Small Dark Room are pleased to announce show&sell, an exhibition/ silent auction of an eclectic collection of photographic work by some of the fields leading, as well as emerging, talents. 

Besides serving as a unique occasion to bring a wide range of photographers under one roof, this one-night-only show 

also constitutes a rare chance for collectors and photography aficionados to view and acquire signed original prints from 

some 150 artists who have generously donated their work. 

Proceeds from this installment of show&sell will benefit the Coalition for the Homeless, an organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for the homeless while providing relief from the detrimental effects of homelessness on an estimated 36,000 individuals across the greater New York City area.

YAJ founders suspected that others would share their passion for literature and art related to angling; what they had not fully anticipated was the intensity of enthusiasm from readers and writers everywhere. Perhaps they shouldn't have been surprised. Some 35 million Americans regularly fish, and among their numbers are presidents and students, old and young, the famous and the unknown, the busy and the idle.

TIGHT LINES: Ten Years of the Yale Anglers' Journal presents a selection of 50 stories, recollections, essays, and poems featured in the Yale Anglers' Journal during its first remarkable decade, and the volume is lavishly illustrated with more than 30 original paintings by James Prosek.

Edited by Joseph Furia, Wyatt Golding, David Haltom, Steven Hayhurst, Joseph Kingsbery, and Alexis Surovov, TIGHT LINES contains a range of writings that all celebrate fish and the experience of fishing yet could hardly be more diverse. Leading American social activist and former California State Senator Tom Hayden and James Orr, Chair of the Department of East Asian Studies at Bucknell University and author of The Victim as Hero: Ideologies of Peace and National Identity in Postwar Japan (2001), discuss the manner in which citizens of both nations have utilized strategies of nonviolence to effect social change, and how these methods have influenced citizen response to the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Moderated by Amy Goodman, co-founder, Executive Producer and Host of Democracy Now! Followed by a reception.

This program is part of the Satya Graha Forum, a series of events throughout New York related to Satya Graha, or the idea of transformation through nonviolence.
