As Thomas Friedman and the Kauffman Foundation recently reported, "Between 1980 and 2005, virtually all net new jobs created in the U.S. were created by firms that were five years old or less." As innovation and entrepreneurship bring hopefulness to a recovering economy, how can we look at creativity, inside and outside of the arts?

In her funny and engaging collection of essays, Museum Legs, Amy Whitaker tackles these questions in relation to the public life of art and the creative life of museums.

As we talk about the creative history of museums and whether they are currently more like libraries or theme parks, we'll engage in the cross-sector questions at the heart of the SOM ethos -- and send you on your way with new frameworks as you visit the Picasso show or the Costume Institute or other summer art plans.

Please join us for a frank conversation about women and wealth.
Women are still making 76 cents on the dollar that men make, and with much love and respect to our male colleagues we'd like to have a conversation about that. The presentation will offer some ideas (a few on the psychological/metaphysical side, a few drawing from my background as an MBA/Wall Street investment management AVP, and some from leading authors on the topic of personal finance) for discussion.
During this free seminar, you will:
Uncover the most common myths about women and money
Delve into todays financial realities and explore how you can be an exception to the statistics
Find out how to create optimal wealth and health simultaneously
Your two presenters have, between us, three Ivy League degrees, several years of experience on Wall Street, 14 years of experience leading private companies, and a few entrepreneurial ventures under our belts. We have a few ideas to share about women and money, and we look forward to having a conversation with you.

The Public Service/Social Justice Committee of the YALE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF METROPOLITAN NEW YORK is proud to partner with the Yale Club of New York City and the Association of Yale Alumni to sponsor the Second Annual YALE DAY OF SERVICE, on May 15, 2010 (or for certain specified events May 1, May 7, May 16 or May 22 - please click on the Day of Service link below for more details).

On this day, thousands of Yale Alumni, family members and friends will gather to volunteer for meaningful events and projects ranging from the labor intensive (sprucing up parks, planting gardens & painting) to the more intellectually stimulating (reading books to children, assisting with job applications & college applications and tutoring) throughout the New York City Area and around the globe.  Among the possible activities are park clean-up activities, tutoring, planting gardens, teaching tennis, various walks and assisting with job and college applications. During the first global Yale Day of Service (2009), we had the pleasure of helping over 500 Yale Alumni & their family & friends serve at approximately 20 sites throughout the area. Please see the attached photos. This year we have added more sites including additional child-friendly sites, we have a broader range of activities and have activities on various dates throughout the month of May to allow alumni to participate on the day that best suits them.  Our first event as part of this year's Day of Service, at the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program, was very well attended with 26 volunteers and 50 children. Mayor Dinkins gave an inspirational introductory speech at this event. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Yale Day of Service Post Reception

Saturday, May 15, 5:00 pm 7:00 pm

Each year, the global Yale Day of Service organizes over 3,500 members of the Yale community to participate in volunteer projects in nearly 170 sites in forty states and twelve countries. Great work is completed in soup kitchens, parks, homeless shelters, schools, and more, all because members of the Yale community are committed to making a difference in their respective communities. This year the Yale Club of New York City will host a reception in the Tap Room to recognize this important tradition and the members that participate. Walk into the reception for $10 cash per person for tasty hors doeuvres, a cash bar, and a chance to catch up with other volunteers.  The Yale Club will relax the dress code to casual attire for Day of Service Post Reception attendees. Jeans and sneakers will be permitted within the Tap Room and at the concert in the Lounge following the reception.

Please join us for a personal conversation about women and wealth.
The unfortunate news is that women are still making 76 cents on the dollar that men make, and 87% of people in poverty are elderly women.  But the uplifting news is that change is afoot!
This presentation will offer a number of ideas for discussion: a few on the psychological/metaphysical end of things, a few drawing from my background as an MBA/Wall Street investment management AVP, and some from leading authors on the topic of personal finance.
During this free seminar, you will:
Uncover the most common myths about women and money
Delve into todays financial realities and explore how you can be an exception to the statistics
Explore the relationship between health and wealth for women.
Your two presenters have, between us, three Ivy League degrees, several years of experience on Wall Street, 14 years of experience leading private companies, and a few entrepreneurial ventures under our belts. We have a few ideas to share about women and money, and we look forward to having a conversation with you.

Hi Dwight Hall!

Hope this finds you enjoying the start to your summer!

Just a few quick things. First, if you are in or around New Haven this summer and would like to receive updates about community service and social justice events during June, July and August, please write to This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  with your name and e-mail address to request those updates.

I won't be sending a widespread D-Holla every week this summer, so the only way for you to know the current events is to request those updates. I will, however, send another D-Holla about halfway through the summer, so if you have anything you'd like me to add, send it my way! Or, as always, you can upload your own information/event to the website and newsletter here: http://www.dwighthall.org/12359

I hope that no matter where you are, you consider serving your community!

Best,

Joe

If your answer to these questions is "yes," consider applying for the Coordinator position of the Wednesday Lunchtime Summer Soup Kitchen. The WLSSK was established in the summer of 2008 to distribute bag lunches to the homeless on Wednesday afternoons, and brings together a group of student volunteers and other community members.
