When:   June 1-July 31, 2011
Where:   Mauritius -- Africa
Type:   Volunteer Opportunity

Experiential Learning Initiative: Africa (ELI Africa; formerly HOPE Global Initiative) is looking for enthusiastic, dedicated Yalies to lead hands-on learning projects and community-building programs for underprivileged youth in Mauritius this summer. Participants (Fellows) will work as a team and with local educators to run targeted creative projects in sustainable agriculture, health/fitness, IT and creative arts, and to establish links between kids and members of the local community. As part of our pilot program, Fellows will also have the opportunity to shape the future of ELI Africa and to develop long-term strategy and initiatives. While Mauritius is to many a high-end tourist destination owing its popularity to its fair climate and vast sandy beaches, the other side of the coin rarely gets reported. Extreme poverty, a rising HIV rate, and low educational opportunities are a reality for many children in Mauritius.

ELI Africa works with orphans and with children who have fallen out of the main education system to create sustainable learning solutions in areas of practical knowledge, and to help them reach their full potential and broaden their horizons.

Program Dates:The program runs for two months in the summer from June 1 until July 31, 2011.

Funding:We will provide a significant stipend for pre- arranged housing, local transportation and all project resources; applicants should expect to pay for their own airfare, food, a small portion of housing, and personal effects (cell phone, etc).

Applications: Visit  http://www.eli-africa.org/apply/Application2011.pdf to download the application form, fill it out and send it to  to   This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  no later than February 11th (12 noon):

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
NO POEM NO SONG explores the religious meeting place between West Indian folklore and East Indian Religion.  We follow the lives of two sons - Mike (a 21st century west Indian reincarnation of the ancient Indian poet Vyasa) and his patron, the Hindu god Ganesh.  When Mikes mother dies he leaves Brooklyn to repatriate her body on her native island of Grenada, but he is haunted by Spirits that are plotting against him and trying to prevent him from reaching home meanwhile Ganesh who has been being used by his parents, in their marital struggle, finally learns the secret way to escape heaven and enter the world of humans.  When this happens Mike and Ganesh start a series of events which have the power to destroy the world of the spirits, trap the world of the gods, and free the world of humans.

Hear about Howard's "Start Over" campaign launched this month, which aims to influence the 2012 election by organizing public support for structural overhaul of government and law, on the premise that only people, not rules, make things happen. Common Good's advisory board includes Howard Baker, Bill Bradley, George McGovern, Jeb Bush, Robert Kagan  and Tom Kean among others. Please note that this is not a Republican agenda of tort reform, but a nuanced, thoughtful, bi-partisan initiative to bring reliability and balance to law that will allow Americans to make choices for the common good.
