Grateful.  Disgusted.  Proud.  Embarrassed.  The Yale Alumni Magazines recent cover story Why They Call Yale The Gay Ivy sparked a furor among its readers. Out of this vehement and diverse alumni response was born The Gay Ivy, a musical theater piece: Roommates reminisce about their parallel yet isolated lives fifty years ago; two women wake up in each others arms; one of the first Africa-American alumnae confesses her own struggle to embrace her sons lifestyle; a legacy-student confronts his grandfathers hatred and his own conflicted sexual identity.

By giving voice to disparate perspectives on the Alumni Magazines controversial article, this piece explores the Yale community as a microcosm of our country today.

YAAMNY is excited to bring you an amazing opportunity.  LUSH LIFE is a new exciting exhibition creating a lot of buzz in the art community, recently featured in the NY Times

Curated by Franklin Evans and Omar Lopez-Chahoud, LUSH LIFE takes place at nine Lower East Side galleries and adopts Richard Prices 2008 novel to title and organize the exhibition.  The novel is set in the contemporary Lower East Side and through a murder investigation exposes the dynamically changing community of the neighborhood, which retains a ghostly and vital link to its layered past.  Each gallery's exhibition reflects the theme of one of the chapters in the book.  Over three hours, we will tour various galleries involved in the exhibition, including one gallery normally closed on weekends which has agreed to open to welcome our group!

Jennifer Weissbach, an art advisor based in New York City, founded Jennifer Weissbach Art Advisory (www.jenniferweissbach.com) with the desire to make the art world accessible to everyone.  Jennifer enjoys educating individuals about exciting and innovative art.  She is passionate about demystifying the art world, and creates an open and warm environment during gallery visits so that people can talk freely and ask questions about the work.

Please register at http://yaamnylushlife.eventbrite.com/

The LUSH LIFE art tour will meet at 1:45 pm in front of the restaurant The National at 8 Rivington Street (on the north side of the street), between Bowery and Chrystie Streets.

When:   July 24, 2010 11:00am-12:00pm
Where:   Hispanic Society of America, 613 W 155th St
Price:   Early $7; Regular $10
Type:   Arts

Join the Educational Programs Committee and the Arts & Entertainment Committee of the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York (YAAMNY) for an intimate guided tour of the Hispanic Society of America at  11 a.m. sharp on Saturday, July 24, 2010. Register today at: http://yaamny-hispanic-society.eventbrite.com.

New York magazine writes of the Hispanic Society: "Founded in 1904, this free museum of Spanish, Portuguese, Latin American and Filipino art, artifacts and books, is often overlookedmost likely due to its out-of-the-way, upper Manhattan location. The omission is unfortunate, considering the beauty of the Beaux-Arts building on stately Audubon Terrace, and the mastery of the works inside. The entrance leads to an interior Renaissance-style patio, decorated with terracotta tiles and illuminated by a skylight. An adjacent room displays wall-to-wall commissioned paintings by the 19th-20th century artist Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, depicting scenes of Spanish life. Upstairs, the main gallery holds works by artists from the 16th century forward, most notably several pieces each by Diego Velázquez (Portrait of a Little Girl) and Francisco Goya (The Duchess of Alba). Bronze Age antiquities, Hispano-Moresque lusterware and ornate liturgical vestments are prominent among the museum's collection of textiles, decorative arts and sculpture."

The collections of the Hispanic Society are unparalleled in their scope and quality outside the Iberian Peninsula, addressing nearly every aspect of culture in Spain, as well as a large part of Portugal and Latin America, through the twentieth century. Seize this opportunity to explore a gorgeous institution in Upper Manhattan. All are welcome. Attendees are warmly invited to include friends and family members.

Early registration (by July 16th, 2010) is strongly encouraged. The available number of tickets is strictly limited.

This upcoming Sunday Im heading out west to the Delaware Water Gap to hike Mount Minsi, one of two peaks between which flows the eponymous river.  The 5.7-mile, 886 ft vertical trail follows the Appalachian Trail if you have never hiked the AT, this is one of the most accessible sections and a dirt road back.  Well take the 8:30 AM Martz Trailways bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal, arriving at the Delaware Water Gap station at 10.  The hike should take approximately four hours, and well take the 2:20 or 2:40 bus back, arriving at 3:50 or 4:25 PM, respectively.  The cost of the hike roundtrip bus transportation is $63.50.  You will need to bring your own food and water, as none are available near the trailhead.  The trail is relatively shaded, but it should nevertheless be sunny & hot, so plan appropriately (sunscreen, sunglasses & hat).

When:   July 26-August 6, 2010
Where:   MS 223, The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology
Type:   Volunteer

The mission of Summer Institute of the Arts (SIA) is to develop young peoples characters and minds through the study of the arts in summer programs focused on middle school kids who would otherwise not have this opportunity.  Our fundamental belief is that the study of the arts, like painting, dance, or music have a meaningful and positive impact on children.  A belief that is supported through numerous studies that link the study of music to cognitive and reasoning skills.  SIA exists so that our children can have the opportunity to develop these crucial skills through the Arts.

With the aforementioned objectives in mind the over-arching goal is to create a summer program that provides an arts based curriculum that focuses on the development of the mind while still being engaging.  The program targets middle school students and exposes these students to careers and higher education opportunities in the Arts.

This objective is met by providing students the opportunity to work with professionals in the Arts in various workshops and forums.  This could come in the form of visiting a Musical Director of a Broadway show at his theatre, or a Master class from a teaching artist, or spending time with a college student who is majoring in the Arts.  These interactions are vital as they illuminate possibilities and ignite dreams in a child's mind.

VOLUNTEER!

The SIA offers a unique community service opportunity for Yale Alumni to work with students in the Arts. The program is structured for alumni to participate as mentors for the students  throughout the day and ideally develop relationships that will allow for continued mentoring of students during the school year. Alumni will assist the teachers and teaching artist during the curriculum and workshops.

An arts background is not necessary though a love of the arts is a prerequisite and any instrumentalists (even if you haven't picked that violin up in 20 years) would be most helpful.  Remember, many of these students have never been exposed to music education so a willingness to help broaden a child's future is the number one requirement. Please see http://sia.alumni.yale.edu to register.

We need volunteers to:

  • Mentor - Provide guidance and support throughout the day to students who may need extra help with the curriculum or who just need a positive influence.
  • Provide and/or Assist with Creative Workshops - Are you an instrumentalist, singer, dance, actor or all of the above? Do you have a creative workshop topic that might be a fit for 6th grade students? Please let us know as we are developing afternoon workshops led by Yale alumni to enrich the morning curriculum.
  • Field Trips/Chaperone - Do you have ties to an arts organization, theater or museum that would welcome middle school students?

LOCATION:
MS 223, THE LABORATORY SCHOOL OF FINANCE AND TECHNOLOGY
360 EAST 145TH ST. BRONX, NY 10454
