The Metaphysics of Breakfast was read as a part of the Yale Undergraduate Playwriting Festival at the Yale Repertory Theater in February 2005. With a cast of talented Yale actors, the play is manic, surprising, and touching. “You get two homes in a lifetime—the one you were given and the one you make . . . and I don’t belong in either one,” observes April Miller after the death of her young husband, Steve. Now, after his death, April finds herself alone for the first time in her life, and her friends urge her to return to her parent’s home while she grieves. But the solace provided by good old Mom and Dad, the figure skater and the feminist philosopher, comes as comedy, not tragedy. As April tries desperately to give her audience a few memories of her husband, she is instead thrown back into the hilarious antics of her childhood, as her parents and best friends provide commentary on April’s life before Steve. In the hours before breakfast, while her mother explains sex in terms of figure skating, her father kills God, and her best friends plan a wedding while acting out the Thanksgiving story, April figures out that sometimes you have to go home to realize just how crazy you are.
