Long Island University's Brooklyn campus announces with great pleasure the opening of its fall exhibition season with Skull Theater, a new installation by Lisa Hein and Bob Seng.  The exhibition opens on Wednesday, September 3 with a reception from 6 to 8, and runs daily through September 30.  Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9-6 and weekends from 10-5.  Admission is free.

As artists specializing in site generated projects, Hein and Seng are inspired by two features of the Humanites Gallery's surroundings. The first is its location in a theater lobby.  The second is its peculiar walls:  all glass, and curved into a shape like a head on the floor.

Taking content from these surroundings, Hein and Seng bring lights and drapes (like those in neighboring Kumble Theater) inside the gallery space.  Theater curtains swerve and bloom into brain-like convolutions.  The convolutions pile into clouds, developing interior weather of their own.  As academic life resumes, Skull Theater compares solitary and social modes of artistic development.  If the Romantic model features individual angst in studio, the more recent collective model frequently offers social experience itself as the product.

Lisa Hein and Bob Seng have collaborated on more than 25 site projects since 1996.  They may be best known in New York for Jello Brick Wall, cooked and mortared over several months at Exit Art in 2003.  Other projects include Dust Bustier, a wind activated storefront installation, at Dust, Las Vegas;  Whoopie Kiosk, a sprinkler installation at Three Rivers Arts Festival, Pittsburgh;  and Whopper, a wandering, spouting whale effigy, in New York harbor off the Brooklyn waterfront.  Hein and Seng's upcoming projects include a new installation at 1305 Position, Austin, TX in October.

Music is a weapon of war: Rhythm organizes a soldier's training; song defines an army's morale and camaraderie; Metallica can help prepare a soldier for battle; the fallen are remembered with the playing of Taps. Though it can easily be co-opted to serve a political or ideological message, music is equally a vehicle for reflection, engagement, and emotional connection, as is seen in David T. Little's gripping music-theatre work, Soldier Songs.

Traditional art forms can serve as launching points for new, cutting-edge products and technologies. Japanese silk braiding, kumihimo, traces its roots to the Jomon era (5500 BC) with techniques now integral to the production of high-strength materials such as the fiber-reinforced plastics used in products from golf clubs to airplane wings. In fact, NASA has been researching silk braiding in attempts to develop applications for spacecraft. In this program, leading kumihimo artist Makiko Tada and Hiroyuki Hamada, Professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology, explore the artistry of kumihimo and how ancient craftsmanship is being applied to new technologies.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS INCUBATE Chicago will be hosting multi-media artist, Anya Liftig, September 12-13th, 2008. During her twelve-hour overnight performance, "Rejected," she will read from her collection of over 400 rejection letters. This performance will begin at 7pm and conclude at 7am the following morning. Members of the public are invited to come and bring their rejection letters (personal, professional, etc.) to the location to be read. Additionally, Liftig is searching around the world over the internet for contributors.

Sa Ka La is a new play written by Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse.  Fosse is Europe's most produced contemporary playwright and his work has been translated into over 40 different languages.

The New York Times has given Fosse outstanding reviews saying, "Mr. Fosse has been compared to Ibsen and to Beckett, and it is easy to see his work as Ibsen stripped down to its emotional essentials. But it is much more. For one thing, it has a fierce poetic simplicity".  Sa Ka La represents a side of Fosse that American audiences have yet to see.  It's funny and poignant at the same timeabout family dynamics and how time passes.  Fosse writes a story that everyone can relate to.

Herbert Ames Cahoon, Jr., social worker, community activist, mentor of students at Dwight Hall at Yale and long-time Director of Yale Volunteer Services, died August 18, 2008 at his home in Woodbridge, CT at 91 years of age.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, daughter Catherine Burnett of Canada and daughter Sarah Cahoon-Poindexter of California, and grandson Wade Poindexter, a student at the University of Arizona.

A memorial service for Herb Cahoon will be held on Friday, September 26 at 4:00pm in Dwight Chapel, 67 High Street, New Haven, CT.  For more information, please contact Dwight Hall at 203.432.2420.  His family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent in Herb's memory to the Herb Cahoon Campus and Community Fund at Dwight Hall.
