Dear Friends of Dwight Hall:

Dwight Hall is helping more students than ever turn their idealism into action. Today 3,000 students – 60% of Yale’s undergraduates – volunteer through Dwight Hall.

Dwight Hall is committed to giving students tools to succeed in service and advocacy today, while providing the foundation for a lifetime of leadership. The Campaign for Dwight Hall will increase our resources to leverage this period of amazing vitality. Our endowment supports only 25% of the operating budget of this student-led organization and does not allow for expanded programming.

For many alumni, Dwight Hall played a defining role in their Yale experience and beyond. The University now gives class or reunion credit for gifts to the Dwight Hall Campaign. So you may remember Dwight Hall and Yale with one gift.

As many of you know, Dwight Hall embarked on this Campaign with two goals: to increase the endowment and restore the Hall’s historic home. Recently the directors made the difficult decision to move operations in 2010. “Difficult” because of our affection for our lovely – if sometimes leaky – Old Campus building. It became clear, however, that preservation would be all-consuming, financially and otherwise. Dwight Hall is not, after all, a building, but a community of students and alumni committed to creating a more just society. The University offered us a handsome building opposite the New Haven Green with ample space for our current programs and for growth. Our beloved home on Old Campus will be meticulously cared for by Yale. This allows us to focus on our mission: helping student leaders live out their commitment to social justice.

To do this, we call upon the thousands of people enriched through Dwight Hall. We have already received commitments from our entire board and staff, as well as generous leadership gifts from friends. Now we ask you not only to give but to be an ambassador to others who share your commitment to Dwight Hall and all it represents.

There are many ways to support the campaign: class or reunion gifts, naming opportunities or unrestricted endowment funding that will give generations of student leaders the freedom to respond to opportunities and challenges we cannot even envision. We invite you to use the resources of our campaign website to learn more. Naturally, the board members, student leaders and staff will be pleased to answer your questions and to hear your thoughts about Dwight Hall’s future.

We thank you for being part of that future.

                                                 Sincerely,
                                                 Ted Swenson '67, '80 SOM
