Sylvia Bingham '09

Sylvia is working with CitySeed on a range of education and publicity projects. Dwight Hall is very excited about this partnership, as CitySeed founder Jennifer McTiernan was a 1997 Dwight Hall Fellow. Sylvia is majoring in French and Sociology, and she is passionate about food and cooking. In 2006, Sylvia interned at an urban garden in Bordeaux, France, that offered job training for the unemployed. Sylvia also worked as an assistant on an organic farm in San Rafael, CA. She is a volunteer for National Student Partnerships and the Yale Sustainable Food Project.


  Yian has developed a hospice homecare volunteer program in conjunction with Connecticut Hospice. He will be spending the summer piloting the program, which sends Yale volunteers to spend time visiting with the terminally ill in their homes. Yian is also a leader of Yale Undergraduates at Connecticut Hospice (YUCH), the on-site Yale volunteer program at CT Hospice that was awarded the 2007 Connecticut Higher Education Community Service Award by Gov. Jodi Rell. Yian is also working to get hospice volunteers into St. Raphael’s. He has been volunteering with hospitals for over six years. Yian is majoring in Biology and is currently applying for MD programs.

Vanessa Mendoza '09

Vanessa grew up in New Haven and is deepening her commitment to her home city this summer as an intern with the Yale Urban Design Workshop. Vanessa, along with the Dwight Management Team, is working to solicit community input for the next phase of revitalization in the Dwight neighborhood. Vanessa is majoring in Architecture and Urban Studies major at Yale, where she is active with Five Magazine, the Yale Gospel Choir, and Amnesty International. Vanessa also oversees the community service activities of Frontline Christian Church.


  Hans is working this summer with the Connecticut Center for a New Economy where he is creating a historical archive for the organization. He will also be conducting a thorough survey of job training resources in New Haven. At Yale, Hans is a member of the Undergraduate Organizing Committee and will be leading a Freshman Outdoor Orientation Trip (FOOT) at the end of the summer. Hans has a strong interest in public interest law and has interned for local and state representatives from his home state of New Mexico.

Christine
Slaughter '07

Christine is working for Planned Parenthood of Connecticut, where she was previously a Global Advocacy Intern. Christine will be working on a number of outreach projects, among them, helping to coordinate an HIV testing day on the Green and creating manuals for sexual health classes. She graduated in May with a degree in Ethics, Politics, and Economics. At Yale, Christine served as the Student Liaison and Outreach Coordinator for the Women Faculty Forum at Yale and was the Political Action Coordinator for the Yale Women’s Center. She was a 2006 recipient of the Robert C. Bates and Richter Fellowships, which she used to conduct interviews with French female politicians.


  Michele is directing Summer Buds. The program, which was started through a 2006 Dwight Hall Summer Fellowship, matches Yale mentors with middle-level readers from grades 5 and 6 to boost the younger students’ confidence and overall academic performance. Summer Buds is in partnership with Joseph K. Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale and the New Haven Reads Community Book Bank. In addition to fostering a love of reading among older elementary school students, the program works to deepen the connection between Yale undergraduates and New Haven. At Yale, Michele is a Physics major involved with AISEC and Model UN.

Kristine
Vanijcharoenkarn '09

Kristine is working on a number of education and translation projects at Fair Haven Community Health Center and HAVEN Free Clinic. One of her projects is teaching nutrition classes at the Fairhaven library. Kristine, a pre-medical student, is majoring in Biology and Political Science. She is fluent in Spanish and has experience volunteering as a medical translator for a team of craniofacial surgeons in El Salvador; she also volunteered at Love Link Infant Malnutrition Center. Kristine plays the Chinese zither and has performed at nursing homes and through the Yale program The Musical Cure.


  Tamiko is a Sociology major and pre-medical student who is drawing from both backgrounds in her work this summer with All Our Kin. One of her main projects for the summer is a health resources calendar to serve as a quick reference of local specialized health services; the calendars will be distributed to home childcare providers throughout the Greater New Haven area. Previously, she has done lab work on issues of maternal and child health. At Yale, Tami has held leadership positions with DreamPioneers, Realizing Race, and RALY. She is a member of the Yale Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team and was a LEAP senior counselor.

Karen Bemis '07

Continuing with the Dwight Hall tradition of student-run groups and organizations, the Dwight Hall Summer Fellowship is managed by a student coordinator. Karen is the 2007 fellowship coordinator. In addition to her duties managing the fellowship, she is also working this summer on development projects with Dwight Hall. Karen graduated in May with a degree in Anthropology. Her previous involvement with Dwight Hall includes serving two years as the Yale Public School Intern at Celentano Museum Academy and conducting research for the CT Coalition for Justice in Education Funding through a Community-Based Learning Initiative.




The work of the 2007 Dwight Hall Summer Fellows has been funded through the generosity of the Yale Club of New Haven, the Yale College Class of 1949, the Yale Class of 1957, NewAlliance Bank, and an anonymous private donor.
