This is a pioneering study that will insure that children, from whom we demand responsibility and accountability, will be also be treated accordingly without unjust punishment. We are delighted to announce that the Juvenile Justice Reform Task Force of the YAAMNY Public Service/Social Justice Committee has been awarded the Community Builder Award from the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice (the Institute). The Task Force has been collaborating with the Institute and the Public Catalyst Group to advocate for reform of New Jerseys juvenile waiver laws.
The Task Force is a multidisciplinary task force whose mission is to:
(i) advocate for reform of the juvenile justice system; and
(ii) assist at risk juveniles in obtaining access to social services and resources (whether they be federal, state or local) and (B) assist juveniles who have been adjudicated as delinquent in gaining access to these resources both while in secure facilities and thereafter in an attempt to prevent recidivism.
The Institute is a Newark-based urban research and advocacy organization dedicated to the advancement of New Jersey's urban areas and residents whose work is to identify, analyze and address the underlying causes of social and economic disparities and to challenge the barriers that constrain cities and their residents from achieving their full potential.
The Institutes Executive Director, Cornell Brooks, is an alumnus of Yale Law School (YLS 90), and its Senior Counsel & Policy Director, Craig Levine, is an alumnus of Yale College (B.A. 87).
The Task Force will receive the award at the Institutes annual gala in the spring where the Institute will also be presenting Jon Corzine with the Amy and Alan Lowenstein Social Justice Award, and Larry Goldman (CEO of NJPAC) with a Lifetime Community Achievement Award.

The Yale Latino Alumni Association of the Tri-State Area has teamed up with DKMS America! We will host a Bone Marrow Registration Drive and a Benefit Concert featuring Yale Performance Groups to raise funds for DKMS America.
From DKMS America Website:
The DKMS mission is to save lives by recruiting bone marrow donors for leukemia patients. DKMS is the largest and most experienced bone marrow donor center in the world with over 2 million registered donors. However, there are still thousands of patients who cannot find their donor match. DKMS will continue to recruit bone marrow donors until every patient gets a second chance at life.
Leukemia and Lymphoma have affected the lives of many Yalies, their families, and friends, and we would like to do our part to combat this disease. In particular, we hope to increase the number of potential donors of color since doctors say that the best chance of a match is among members of the same ethnic group. For example, Latinos count for just 7% of registered donors worldwide, making it more challenging to find a match and save lives.
Denise Bertholin Yale 05, is a Panamanian and Guatemalan alum who was diagnosed with Leukemia last May.
Here is a CNN story about her that discusses the need to increase Latino donors:

Seun Adebiyi Yale Law 09, was born in Nigeria and raised in Alabama. Seun was diagnosed with both leukemia and lymphoma while training for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games just days after his graduation.

Please join this committee today to help us increase the number of donors registered and help raise funds for this amazing organization that changes lives! Also please SAVE THE
DATE SATURDAY, MAY 15th, 2010 Yale Day of Service. Finally, please forward this e-mail to any alumni who might be interested.

Dear Fellow Alums,
We hope to see many of you at our first ever Yale Latino Alumni Reunion (YLAA), which will be held April 3 - 5! A team of dozens of Latino alumni have volunteered their time to organize this exciting event, which is the first national event being organized by YLAA.
At the Reunion, we will provide an update on YLAA's organizational development and results from the AYA/YLAA survey that was sent out in the Fall, hold a brainstorming session on future YLAA's future, and announce the nominations and elections process for the first elected Board. We hope to have a new Board installed later this year and encourage you to think about nominating your friends or YOURSELF! For now, we wanted to provide the attached overview of the organization. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
We are certain that tons of energy will be created from the exciting program that the Reunion Committee Co-Chairs, Araceli Campos and Sara Salvide, have been working with their team on. We truly believe that the Reunion will fulfill the message of its theme, Uniting Yale Latinos: From Nuestra Casa to Contributions Around the World. If you haven't already, please start making your plans to come!
