Andrew Jones, a graduate of Yale Law and a resident of Greenwich Village, will exhibit his paintings of cast iron railings of early nineteenth century stoops of New York.  Jones is an active preservationist whose love of New York's architectural legacy has inspired him to depict the elaborate cast iron railings and aging brownstone stoops of townhouses in New York's older districts.  The paintings will include scenes from the Village, Chelsea, and Brooklyn.  The paintings can be previewed at the gallery website, above.

Recent productions of plays by Jonathan Leaf (BK '88) have won multiple award nominations and rave reviews in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Daily News, The New Yorker, The New Criterion and many other publications.

Leaf's plays have been praised for their unusual union of lively entertainment and intellectual power and substance.

His latest play will be going on for just a four-week limited run. It features a superb cast which includes two recent Drama Desk nominees. The play is about a pair of 1960's sex researchers, and it delves into such important issues as the importance of childbirth and family to both women and men and the nature of homosexuality and changing attitudes towards it.

"Sexual Healing" will run from Wednesday, January 6 to Saturday, January 30. Shows are at 7:30 pm on Wednesday and Thursday and 8:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.

The Public Service/Social Justice Committee of the YALE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF METROPOLITAN NEW YORK is proud to honor Dr. King's legacy by serving fellow New Yorkers at this Soup Kitchen during winter. We are looking for 10 volunteers to help serve food & drinks to approximately 700 patrons and to assist in the cleaning process.

Born on January 15, 1929, Dr. King led one of the most successful non-violent civil rights movements in history.  In addition to being the youngest recepient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his advancement of human rights,  Dr.  King was a beloved husband and father.    

An excerpt from Dr. King's acceptance speech of the Nobel Peace Prize follows:

"I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that the "isness" of man's present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal "oughtness" that forever confronts him. I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsom and jetsom in the river of life, unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him. I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant. "

This Wednesday, there is a homelessness service project that is desperately in need of your help.  The annual point-in-time homeless count is Wednesday, from 6 pm to 11 pm. Each year, New Haven advocates do a count of the homeless in new haven, by sending groups of 3-4 advocates to different parts of New Haven, and actually counting the # of homeless. THIS NUMBER IS USED TO DETERMINE FUNDING FOR NEW HAVEN'S HOMELESSNESS NETWORK.  And this year, the count is EXTREMELY SHORT ON VOLUNTEERS.  So any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

If you have limited time on Wednesday night, you can arrive at the count as late as 7 pm, and the count will be over for most groups by between 9:30 and 10:00. Born in Vancouver in 1931, Kazuko Shiraishi is one of Japans foremost poets. Influenced by abstract art, experimental literature, and avant-garde jazz, she is beloved by readers around the world for her humane vision: through her poems she meets her living self/pretending to be a dead body but fully alive. The new collection, My Floating Mother, City, contains poems from her most recent books published in Japan, including The Running of the Full Moon (2004) and My Floating Mother, City (2003), which received the Bansui Poetry Award and a Cultural Award from the Emperor of Japan. Also included in the book are three long sequences including Sendai Metro, Greece Street, translated for the first time into English, and Little Planet, translated on a paper napkin by Allen Ginsberg.

The program features a collaboration with jazz trumpeter Oki Itaru.

Moderated by Forrest Gander, author and Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Brown University.

Followed by a reception.
