Through the storied doors of Dwight Hall, the Center for Public Service and Social Justice at Yale, thousands have passed.

Now, Dwight Hall is taking time out to invite its many alumni, graduate students, teaching and Yale staff and members of the community back for a First Annual Dwight Hall Reunion on Monday, April 13, from 5-6:30 p.m. The event takes place in the Dwight Hall Library, 67 High St., New Haven.

Since its founding in 1881, Dwight Hall has retained its roots as an entirely student-run organization concerned with issues of social justice and public service.

“So many outstanding individuals have contributed to Dwight Hall’s storied past,” said Executive Director Alex Knopp. “They are important stakeholders who are equally as vital to our future. We want to bring them along on our next journey, as we prepare to move Dwight Hall to a new location next year.”

Along with the chance to mingle and enjoy refreshments, attendees will have the chance to learn more about the activities of Dwight Hall member groups. They also will have the chance to continue building Dwight Hall’s historic legacy. In a special feature, the Marketing Fellows of Dwight Hall are creating a Dwight Hall Photo Wall recognizing the many individuals who have served Dwight Hall over the years. To that end, attendees with photographs from their Dwight Hall days are asked to email a photo to  This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  in advance, or to bring the photo with them to the event. A photographer will also be on hand at the reception. The Dwight Hall Photo Wall is an exhibit that will help to bridge Dwight Hall’s past and future during the next year. Semana Chicana is an annual week-long event organized by MEChA de Yale that addresses Chicano/a issues. This year, we plan to hold Semana Chicana from April 23rd to the 26th. Our theme this year will address contemporary and historical educational disparities in the United States, with a focus on DREAM Act advocacy. As a group, MEChA is founded on principles that recognize education as the avenue for change in our society. As students who recognize the importance of education for social mobility and development, we feel that greater attention needs to be drawn to the inequalities and challenges that currently face the American education system.

Thursday
Cemetery of Dreams. Public Demonstration
This event will take place on Cross-Campus and will consist of cardboard tomb stones with short descriptions of talented students who couldn't continue their education because of the challenges and struggles they faced as undocumented students. Tabling will be conducted so that students can sign postcards asking legislators to support the DREAM Act. This will be an all-day event.

Friday
Film Screening & Discussion of HB 1403
HB 1403 is a 2006 Award-winning documentary that forces on undocumented students in Texas and the landmark legislation HB 1403, which passed in 2001, that opened educational opportunities to all students in Texas. The film will be screened at 4 p.m. in Silliman College. A round-table discussion/dinner will follow.

Saturday
Workshop on the DREAM Act with Marisol Ramos
Marisol Ramos works as a Core Member for the New York State Youth Leadership Council, providing political education and organizing training. This interactive workshop describes what the DREAM Act is and how individuals, particularly students, can become more active in the DREAM Act campaign. Davenport College Common Room, 4 p.m.

Sunday
Closing Dinner with Keynote Speaker, Migrant Right’s Activist Kyle de Beausset. Hoping to publicize the plight of Guatemalans immigrants, De Beausset documented the journey immigrants face from Guatemala into the United States. After his return to the United States, De Beausset, a Harvard Undergraduate, has become a spokesperson for immigrant rights. Dinner time and location TBD.

What is causing the transition from the Modernist mantra of "Form Follows Function" to the fanciful forms of architecture today? Is it post-post modernism, a consumerist economy, new technology or lofty expressions of the human spirit? Since architecture represents the spirit of its times, the answer to this question also relates to the dynamic changes in the global context underway today, as well as the "Bilbao Effect." Two of today's best-known international architects, César Pelli (former Dean of the Yale School of Architecture) and Paul Tange, bring their insights from opposite points around the world.  Moderated by Geeta Mehta.

Friday, April 24

9AM-3PM
Bus Leaves from Phelps Gate

Join the Yale College Democrats, the Yale Public Health Coalition, as well as undergraduates and medical students from all across Connecticut at The Capitol Building in Hartford to lobby the legislature for health care reform on Friday, April 24. This is a rare opportunity to make a direct personal investment in an issue you care about. HB6600, a bill currently under consideration by the Connecticut State Legislature, would effectively phase in universal health coverage in Connecticut over a period of five years. It would also improve efficiency and effectiveness through pooling and preventative care. As students, we should be leading the fight to improve health coverage; after we graduate, many of us will be without insurance, an illness or an accident away from crippling debts. Connecticut can send a message to the nation that providing universal health care isn’t just a good idea—it’s our moral duty as a society. Please consider coming to Hartford to experience advocacy first-hand.

Not your average lobby day -  In addition to a large kick-off event, you'll be able to meet one-on-one with the Senators and Representatives who will be the crucial votes for health reform in Connecticut.

Free, with benefits - Advocating for health reform is easier than you thought. Enjoy free breakfast and lunch, travel in a comfy coach bus, and be back in time for your afternoon nap.

Make a real difference - SustiNet, the innovative proposal for health reform in Connecticut, recently passed through the public health committee and will be considered soon by the entire state legislature, so action now is critical. Moreover, passing health reform here in Connecticut, the insurance capital of the world, will help build momentum for President Obama's national health reform plan.

Whether you are a seasoned lobbyist or have never spoken with a legislator before, this event offers many ways to participate in promoting universal health care.

Coach Bus Transportation to Hartford will be free.

While only in its fifth year, the 5K walk has seen enormous success not only among Yale students, but the entire New Haven community.  Founded by Yale students and organized by Yale students, the walk is an important part of the university's service towards the local community.  With all proceeds going directly to the ten organizations on the Mayors Task Force on AIDS, the event addresses a greatly-overlooked health problem on the front lawn of our school.

AIDS Walk New Haven is a great way for alumni to stay involved in giving back to the New Haven community.

There are numerous ways to get involved in the Walk:

1)      Register to walk as an Individual or as a team at our website: www.aidswalknewhaven.org

2)      Publicity (Spread the word!) - In order to get a large showing, we need to get the word out!  Please tell your friends, family, co-workers, employees, spouse's co-workers, all about our new website and the date of the Walk - April 26, 2009.

3)      Donate by Shopping Online - That's right, you can donate to AIDS Walk New Haven simply by shopping online.  Check out our GoodShop website at _http://www.goodshop.com/?charityid=889135   where you can buy from over 700 stores (including Amazon, Best Buy, eBay, Apple, 1-800-Contacts) and a small portion of your purchase will go to our cause.  It's free, quick and easy.

4)      Corporate Sponsors - The Walk would not be such a big success without the companies that support our cause right from the start and offer their corporate sponsorship to cover the costs of the event.  If your company, your spouse's company, or any other organization would like to be an official AIDS Walk New Haven sponsor, we have a range of levels with all kinds of advertising benefits.  Please contact This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript " title="mailto:'); document.write( addy88219 ); document.write('">'); //-->\n This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript with any questions.

PREPARING FOR MANDATORY GREENHOUSE GAS REPORTING IN THE U.S.

A Dialogue with the Environmental Protection Agency

Webcast Hosted by The Conference Board

Panelist: William N. Irving, Chief of the Program Integration Branch. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Climate Change Division.  This EPA branch is responsible for preparing the annual Inventory of GHG Emissions & Sinks (submitted to the UN), analyzing climate legislation, supporting domestic and international climate policy development, and coordinating the EPAs mandatory rulemaking for greenhouse gases.  Mr. Irving is an elected member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Task Force Bureau for GHG Inventories.

Moderator:  Dinah A. Koehler, Sc.D., Senior Research Associate, The Conference Board

Government regulation of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) in the U.S. is on its way. Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its proposed GHG Reporting Rule, which would require manufacturers, utilities, fuel suppliers and vehicle manufacturers to report their total annual GHG emissions starting in 2010.The rule covers up to 90% of GHG emissions sources in the U.S. In addition, the data generated by the rule will instruct a variety of new climate change policies under federal consideration, including cap and trade, regulation of GHG emissions under the Clean Air Act and carbon fees. Given the significance of this policy shift for all business, The Conference Board is presenting a webcast dialogue with the EPA to discuss specific aspects of the rule, and its implications for business including how the data can be used.

This webcast will discuss:

  • Whether companies currently doing reporting under a voluntary reporting scheme (e.g. Carbon Disclosure Project) need to change how they collect data

  • How the rule addresses facility vs. company level reporting

  • Coordination between filing to the EPA and the SEC, especially to satisfy investor interest in GHG emissions data

  • How the data can help a company subject to a shareholder resolution on climate change or litigation

  • How to comment on the rule
