Professor Elisabeth Wood on Wartime Sexual Violence: Leveraging Variation toward Change

The frequency of rape of civilians and other forms of sexual violence varies dramatically across conflicts, armed groups within conflict, and units within armed groups.  The literature generally neglects these contrasts, focusing on cases of widespread rape. Yet rape is not inevitable during war. Many armed groups, including some state militaries, insurgent groups, and ethnic groups, do not engage in widespread rape despite frequent interaction with civilians. Some armed groups engage in ethnic cleansing the classic setting for widespread rape without engaging in sexual violence. After developing a theoretical framework emphasizing the strategic choices on the part of armed group leadership, the norms of combatants, dynamics within small units, and the effectiveness of military discipline, the discussion will focus on how policy-makers might leverage such variation towards more effective policies against wartime sexual violence.

In the last decade, New Haven lost $30 million simply due to the Census undercount in 2000, and this year the New Haven community has been working hard to make sure that this under-count does not happen again.  Specifically, each person who isn't counted in New Haven costs the City around $10,000 in funding for services people desperately need.  Certain populations in New Haven such as undocumented immigrants, homeless people, and low income people who don't trust the government are hard to count, and we rely on many New Haven non-profits to reach out to those populations.  Youll have the opportunity to go out to various non-profits around the New Haven community throughout the afternoon to distribute Census goods and make sure that each non-profit is equipped to pass on Census information to the populations they help serve.

In 1998, New Haven became home to the first inner-city Shaw's Supermarket in the country after substantial collaboration amongst local institutions, organizations, and residents. On March 31st, however, Shaw's will close its doors for good, and the area will once again lack a full-service grocery store. Shaw's exit not only severely restricts local food access, but it also eliminates more than one hundred community jobs and leaves a major commercial property to blight. In the face of a widely recognized need for a replacement supermarket, a broad spectrum of stakeholders has once again mobilized to address these problems. Join us to hear from a panel of community leaders and activists about how civic engagement can serve as a powerful means of combating a community crisis- and learn what you can do to help bring a full-service grocer back to New Haven. Sponsored by the Dwight Hall Urban Fellows Program.

Grateful.  Disgusted.  Proud.  Embarrassed.  The Yale Alumni Magazines recent cover story Why They Call Yale The Gay Ivy sparked a furor among its readers, igniting a larger controversy about homophobia, tradition and the generational divide in our country today.  Out of this vehement and diverse alumni response was born The Gay Ivy, a musical theater collage featuring work by more than a dozen writers and composers: roommates reminisce about their parallel yet isolated lives fifty years ago; two women wake up in each others arms; one of the first Africa-American alumnae confesses her own struggle to embrace her sons lifestyle; a legacy-student confronts his grandfathers hatred and his own conflicted sexual identity.

After reading "Why They Call Yale the Gay Ivy," I've decided to come out of the closet. To the entire world I now declare myself a flaming homophobe.  - Class of 60, Letter to the Editor

Even in a community of liberal elites, how could alumni write such hateful things with a sense of impunity?  Why did many feel that they had the right to condemn homosexuality and claim ownership of Yale?  As gayness, gay characters and gay celebrities have become more accepted and even celebrated, casual homophobia still pervades our society.  While the fight for marriage equality is gaining ground and President Obama has finally acted to repeal Dont Ask Dont Tell, millions of Americans still believe that homosexuality is wrong and shameful.  The Gay Ivyis a portrait of this pivotal moment in our culture. By giving voice to disparate perspectives on the Alumni Magazines controversial article, it explores the Yale community as a microcosm of our country today.

Please join us for this One Night Only event at Dixon Place, NYCs Downtown Laboratory for Performance.

Join students from Yale and across the state on Friday, April 9th at the Capitol Building in Hartford to lobby the legislature for education reform!

The event includes

Free lunch and transportation to Hartford

Issue briefings and lobbying training

Face-to-face meetings with legislators at the state capitol

Kickoff event with speakers on education reform

Connecticut has fallen behind in the federal Race to the Top initiative, losing out on the first round of funding for education. However, you can help in the state's second attempt to win crucial grants through the program, and put Connecticut on the path to comprehensive education reform.

This is your opportunity to experience advocacy first-hand and create change, meeting directly with legislators to advocate for better schools. Dont worry if youve never lobbied beforewell ensure that you are briefed on the details of the issues and are well-prepared to communicate the urgency and importance of education reform.

Connecticut students deserve better than the status quo. Please consider coming to Hartford to demand better schools, and learn what it takes to make a personal impact on the legislative process.

TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT, go here: http://tinyurl.com/ygv5unh. Free transportation will be provided, and lunch as well. Well leave from Phelps Gate at 9:30 am and be back in New Haven by 2:30 in the afternoon.

For the past two years, the City of New Haven has not included the Cedar St. Overflow Shelter - which houses up to 125 men in the winter months - in the budget, relying instead on massive grassroots fundraising campaigns fueled by supporters throughout New Haven. While these campaigns have been inspiring, they have fueled an at best underfunded shelter which does little to move its clients out of homelessness. Over the last several months, service providers from throughout New Haven have put forward a variety of creative and exciting proposals to make our shelter system more sustainable and productive, but the City has been unresponsive to their ideas. So today, just six months before New Haven must open any winter overflow shelter it wants to operate, we ask the administration: what is your plan for the homeless?

Please join us in calling on the Community Services Administrator and the Mayor to open a productive dialogue on these new proposals and create a sustainable shelter system.

Hi Dwight Hall!

Bulldog Days was very successful for Dwight Hall! We were able to talk to freshmen about service and social justice at Yale during four different times in the three days and we got a great response from the prefrosh. The class of 2014s enthusiasm for service means we have a lot to look forward to!

Even though were winding down, we still have some great events and opportunities you should check out!

Peace by Peace, one of our new member groups, has organized The New Haven Health Festival on Sunday April 25th on the New Haven Green at 1:00pm. More information below.

Also, if you are going to be here this summer, consider volunteering with the Wednesday Lunchtime Summer Soup Kitchen! More information below.

Additionally, YHHAP has been circulating a petition to put pressure on City Hall to make a plan for the homeless shelters for next year. The Cedar St. Overflow Shelter closed 18 days early this year (April 12th) and we are roughly $100,000 behind in fundraising and grants for next year from where we were at this point last year. Unless something happens the shelter will only be able to be kept open for 3 months next winter. Please sign this petition that we will bring to our meeting with the mayor to show that New Haven residents are looking to him to make a more sustainable plan for homelessness. There are more details in the petition if you are interested! http://www.change.org/hunger_and_homelessness_action_project/petitions/view/new_haven_whats_your_plan_for_the_homeless

Hope all is well,

Joe

How did President Andrew Johnson, a conservative Democrat and white racist, who succeeded Abraham Lincoln, apply Lincoln's principles to the four million freed black slaves, to the Americans who had fought to preserve slavery, to the Americans who fought to preserve the Union, and to those who fought to end the vestiges of slavery after the American Civil War?

How did a dispute about President Johnson's application of those principles result in his impeachment by a Radical Republican House of Representatives? Were the few United States Senators who voted not to remove the impeached President "profiles in courage" or were they something less noble? What lessons does the impeachment offer regarding current disputes between the American President and the Congress?

Listen to a stimulating discussion of these issues by David Stewart '73 JE, '78 LAW, the author of the new book, "Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln's Legacy."  David also wrote the best-selling account of the writing of the American Constitution, "The Summer of 1787."

The program discussion will be followed by a reception.
