Marginalized and impoverished populations too often have their environments and resources exploited for the benefit of others. From the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to mining practices in Bolivia to the mistreatment of industrial agricultural workers in Nicaragua, poorer communities - and future generations - are the victims of environmental exploitation, and ruin. YLAA Opportunity to Help Ensure that New York Voters Cast Ballots that Count!
YLAA calls on its members to volunteer for Election Protection, the nations largest non-partisan voter protection coalition on September 14, 2010, the day of the New York primary! There are two opportunities to assist the efforts to ensure that voters cast a meaningful ballot the 1-866-OUR-VOTE hotline and mobile legal volunteers. Election Protection is operated by the non-profit and non-partisan organization Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
For the first time in more than fifty years, New York State will be using a new method for voting --"optical scan" (think standardized tests) voting machines. Due to confusing error messages and lack of public awareness around this new technology, voting experts fear that elderly, non-English speaking and minority voters will experience difficulties in voting that may lead to their vote not being counted.
You can help! Volunteers with Spanish language skills are especially needed. Sign up to either be a mobile legal volunteer or a hotline volunteer!
Mobile Legal Volunteers (MLVs) On Primary Day, teams of 2 MLVs will be assigned to a set of polling sites within the five boroughs. MLVs will: o Conduct a survey specifically designed around the voting machine issue; o Report any problems on the ground to the appropriate channels; and o Assist voters by communicating with poll workers and the Election Protection hotline if any issues arise.
Hotline Volunteers From the call center at Davis Polk & Wardwell in Midtown Manhattan, hotline volunteers will answer calls from voters on Primary Day and give voters the information and resources they need on issues ranging from voter registration, unhelpful poll workers, voting machine problems and voter intimidation. Moreover, the data collected is used to enact reform at the local and national levels.
Minimal Time Commitment o All volunteers must attend one training session, to be held in early September at the offices of one of the law firm partners in either Midtown or the Financial District. o On Primary Day (September 14, 2010), both hotline volunteers and MLVs will be assigned to one shift of at least four hours (5:30AM- 9:30AM; 9:30AM-1:30PM; 1:30PM-5:30PM; 5:30PM-9:30PM).
Sign up with Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law to Help!
What if I have more questions? You can email YLAA contact Myrna Pérez at: This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript or go to the website operated by Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law: www.866ourvote.org. Lead the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project campaign to shelter every man woman and child in New Haven. Join Shelter Now!
The next YHHAP Shelter Now Campaign meeting is this Tuesday, September 14th at 9:00pm in the YHHAP room! (The YHHAProom is on the left side-second floor of Dwight Hall. Stairs are located in the foyer to the left of the center Chapel.) Shelter Now is a student-run campaign that raises political awareness and money to make sure that every resident of New Haven is provided shelter in the winter. Shelter Now began in the fall of 2008 in response to the closing of the Cedar St. overflow shelter, leaving 125 men without a place to stay at night. Since that time we, along with community partners, have mobilized to raise the money necessary to keep the shelter open. Shelter Now has raised over $70,000 in two years. This semester, we hope to raise at least $25,000 to alleviate additional cuts to homeless shelters in the city. Join Shelter Now if you are interested in:1. finding creative and lucrative ways to fundraise (ex. YHHAP FAST, Sleepout on Old Campus and Faculty Lunches). 2. increasing awareness on campus about homelessness, and gaining more of an understanding about it yourself. 3. getting more involved in the politics and policy behind sheltering the homeless. 4. gaining invaluable experience with organizing school-wide events such as faculty lunches, a discussion panel, and the Sleepout 5. helping others in a very active and enthusiastic environment! With the support of YHHAP Board members, you will be leading this campaign!
If you have any questions, please ask or check out our website! If you'd like to join the Shelter Now panlist, email This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript . We hope to see you Tuesday evening at 9:00pm in the YHHAP room of Dwight Hall. Additional Info/Contact: This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript | ||

Talk with the author of The Power of Half about his family's decision to donate half
Kevin Salwen
Co-Author of The Power of Half: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Kevin Salwen has flown on Air Force One and on the NASA zero-gravity aircraft called the “vomit comet.” He has thrown out the first ball at a New York Mets game, and most recently was an extra in the Academy Award-winning movie, The Blind Side.
Kevin was a reporter, columnist and editor at the Wall Street Journal from 1981 to 2000. At the nation’s largest newspaper, Kevin helped cover two presidential administrations, wrote two columns and launched two publications. Since leaving the paper in 2000, Kevin built several media ventures and works with such organizations as the U.S. Olympic Committee and Yahoo!
A graduate of Northwestern University, Kevin serves on the boards of Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta and the East Africa Children’s Education Fund.
In 2006, at the urging of his then 14-year-old daughter Hannah, Kevin and his family embarked on a family philanthropic project to help villagers in Africa build a better future for themselves and their children.
These days, Kevin and his family spend much of their time and energy encouraging Americans to recognize that they can build more powerful relationships through generosity and service. The story of The Power of Half has been featured in The New York Times, CBS Sunday Morning, ABC World News With Diane Sawyer, The View, People and Oprah magazines and many other media outlets.
