Bring a friend!

New Haven/Leon Sister City Project
608 Whitney Avenue (Unitarian Building)
On the J Whitney bus line, or 20 minute walk from downtown up Whitney Ave. near Cold Spring St.

Help organize a New Haven based campaign to address environmental and economic injustice in the Americas - from climate change to mining to oil extraction to deforestation; we need to stop trashing the planet and stop dumping on marginalized communities.  We are working to develop an action oriented campaign that will involve art, music, nonviolent direct action, a march on October 2nd (Gandhis birthday), and push for concrete personal and policy change.   More info: Chris at This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript ; 203 562 1607 (mornings)

The past is our definition. We may strive, with good reason, to escape it, or to escape what is bad in it, but we will escape it only by adding something better to it.  Wendell Berry

Change means movement. Movement means friction.  Saul Alinsky

The New Haven/León Sister City Project is a progressive, binational, grassroots organization that fosters a partnership between the communities of Greater New Haven, Connecticut and León, Nicaragua. Our mission is to promote social justice.

YLAA Opportunity to Help Ensure that New York Voters Cast Ballots that Count!

YLAA calls on its members to volunteer for Election Protection, the nations largest non-partisan voter protection coalition on September 14, 2010, the day of the New York primary! There are two opportunities to assist the efforts to ensure that voters cast a meaningful ballot  the 1-866-OUR-VOTE hotline and mobile legal volunteers.  Election Protection is operated by the non-profit and non-partisan organization Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

For the first time in more than fifty years, New York State will be using a new method for voting --"optical scan" (think standardized tests) voting machines.  Due to confusing error messages and lack of public awareness around this new technology, voting experts fear that elderly, non-English speaking and minority voters will experience difficulties in voting that may lead to their vote not being counted.

You can help!  Volunteers with Spanish language skills are especially needed. Sign up to either be a mobile legal volunteer or a hotline volunteer!

Mobile Legal Volunteers (MLVs)

On Primary Day, teams of 2 MLVs will be assigned to a set of polling sites within the five boroughs. MLVs will:

o Conduct a survey specifically designed around the voting machine issue;

o Report any problems on the ground to the appropriate channels; and

o Assist voters by communicating with poll workers and the Election Protection hotline if any issues arise.

Hotline Volunteers

From the call center at Davis Polk & Wardwell in Midtown Manhattan, hotline volunteers will answer calls from voters on Primary Day and give voters the information and resources they need on issues ranging from voter registration, unhelpful poll workers, voting machine problems and voter intimidation.  Moreover, the data collected is used to enact reform at the local and national levels.

Minimal Time Commitment

o All volunteers must attend one training session, to be held in early September at the offices of one of the law firm partners in either Midtown or the Financial District.

o On Primary Day (September 14, 2010), both hotline volunteers and MLVs will be assigned to one shift of at least four hours (5:30AM-

9:30AM; 9:30AM-1:30PM; 1:30PM-5:30PM; 5:30PM-9:30PM).

What if I have more questions?

You can email YLAA contact Myrna Pérez at:  This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript or go to the website operated by Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law: www.866ourvote.org.  Persons who are not lawyers, paralegals, or law students are encouraged to contact Myrna for additional training.

Lead the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project campaign to shelter every man woman and child in New Haven. Join Shelter Now!

The next YHHAP Shelter Now Campaign meeting is this Tuesday, September 14th at 9:00pm in the YHHAP room! (The YHHAProom is on the left side-second floor of Dwight Hall. Stairs are located in the foyer to the left of the center Chapel.)

Shelter Now is a student-run campaign that raises political awareness and money to make sure that every resident of New Haven is provided shelter in the winter. Shelter Now began in the fall of 2008 in response to the closing of the Cedar St. overflow shelter, leaving 125 men without a place to stay at night. Since that time we, along with community partners, have mobilized to raise the money necessary to keep the shelter open.

Shelter Now has raised over $70,000 in two years. This semester, we hope to raise at least $25,000 to alleviate additional cuts to homeless shelters in the city.

Join Shelter Now if you are interested in:
1. finding creative and lucrative ways to fundraise (ex. YHHAP FAST, Sleepout on Old Campus and Faculty Lunches).
2. increasing awareness on campus about homelessness, and gaining more of an understanding about it yourself.
3. getting more involved in the politics and policy behind sheltering the homeless.
4. gaining invaluable experience with organizing school-wide events such as faculty lunches, a discussion panel, and the Sleepout
5. helping others in a very active and enthusiastic environment! With the support of YHHAP Board members, you will be leading this campaign!

If you have any questions, please ask or check out our website! If you'd like to join the Shelter Now panlist, email This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript . We hope to see you Tuesday evening at 9:00pm in the YHHAP room of Dwight Hall.

The Yale Precision Marching Band (YPMB) entered a great video of the Hawaii Five-O Theme for CBS' Marching Band Mania competition. It is part of a promotional deal for the remake of Hawaii Five-O. More importantly, there's $25,000 on the line for the winning band.

We need your help to vote for us to win: vote now, vote tomorrow, vote every day until October 4th! The money would make a huge difference to the programs for Yale University Bands, which also encompasses Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble.
