The Arthur Liman Summer Fellowship Program

The Liman Summer Fellowship gives students the opportunity to work at substantive summer internships in the field of public interest law.  Students work in diverse settings with lawyers and advocates.  Examples include work on issues such as children’s rights, immigrants’ rights, workers’ rights, prison conditions, voting rights, consumers’ rights, low income housing, civil rights, educational adequacy, and juvenile justice.  Placements can include organizations providing civil or criminal legal services to individuals, representation of particular groups, entities focused on problems of legal and public policy, and law-related media.
All currently-enrolled students are eligible to apply, including seniors wishing to work the summer immediately following their graduation.

The Liman Program provides all summer fellows with:

*   A $3,000 stipend for a summer internship.
*   Assistance with internship placement.
*   Connections to a wide range of prominent organizations across the United States.  Recent internships have included: All Our Kin (New Haven, CT); The Bronx Defenders (New York, NY); The Electronic Frontier Foundation (San Francisco, CA); Human Rights First (New York, NY); National Center for Youth Law (Oakland, CA); USPIRG (Washington, DC); Youth Rights Media (New Haven, CT); and many others.

Summer Fellows have the opportunity to participate in the Liman Public Interest Law Colloquium, an annual event held at Yale Law School that brings together advocates, scholars, and students from across the country for a day-long discussion on public interest topics such as low-wage workers and workfare, the role of mass media in public interest advocacy, and policies of incarceration.  Through their involvement with the Liman Program, Summer Fellows become part of a large network of public interest advocates.

Applications for Summer 2010 fellowships must be submitted by December 4, 2009 at 5pm.

Claudia Lopez:Political Researcher, New Rainbow Corporation and Civil Society Electoral Mission Lopez is one of the most respected Colombian political analysts for having exposed the infiltration of paramilitary death squads at some of the highest levels of Colombias political system. Her research on the infiltration of paramilitary groups in the Colombian Congress triggered a national scandal known as parapolitics which led to the legal investigation of more than a third of all members of Congress. She subsequently helped found the Electoral Observatory Mission, a coalition of NGOs and journalists that monitors political processes in Colombia, and also currently works for the New Rainbow Foundation as an analyst of illegal groups and armed conflict. Her courageous dedication to strengthening human rights and the rule of law makes her one of the most well-known contributors to democratic development in Colombia today.

Maria, Machado: A co-founder of SUMATE, Venezuelas leading watchdog for electoral transparency, Machado dedicates herself to defending democratic institutions and civil liberties in Venezuela. Using the right granted by the new Bolivarian Constitution to call popular referendums, SUMATE successfully organized national petition-signing drives that reached more than a quarter of all registered voters in Venezuela. Prior to co-founding SUMATE, Machado founded and directed the Opportunitas Foundation, an NGO that provides support to children and youth from low-income families. She also founded Fundación Atenea, an NGO which managed a childrens safe house.

Sponsored by the Student Executive Committee, Social Justice Network, and Magee Fellowship of Dwight Hall at Yale.

Lori Laitmans humorous treatment of the poetry of Thomas Lux resonates widely with baritones, especially with Andrew Garland, who reprises the cycle Men with Small Heads in two upcoming recitals titled Living American Composers. The recitals will take place in New York City and Cincinnati and will also feature songs by Rorem, Paulus, Kohn and Cipullo.

Garland's November 2008 Weil Recital Hall performance of Laitmans cycle with pianist Donna

Loewy garnered high praise from the press: Garland thoroughly owned these quirky settings of

child's-eye-view poems by Thomas Lux ...Whether as the perspective-challenged six-year-old of

the title song, a youth lusting after a jar of maraschino cherries, the proud owner of a tin parrot

pin whose charm is lost on others or a deliciously sibilant snake warning swimmers out of his

lair, Garland was utterly engaging. Laitman's sense of humor enhances her considerable skill as a

Do you have an idea for an innovative program, project, or organization? Unite For Sight's Founder and CEO will hold a 1/2-day workshop to help you launch your idea. The workshop will focus on effective healthcare delivery and the importance of best practices in global health, successful strategies of social innovation and social entrepreneurship, and mentoring and guidance on how to establish new initiative, projects, and organizations. The workshop will be a small, intimate forum with a limited capacity of no more than 9 participants.

  • Who: Students and professionals are eligible to apply. Successful applicants will have demonstrated an interest in global health. Participants may already be developing or leading global health programs, or they may be interested in learning how to design or participate in effective public health programming.

  • When: Friday, November 13, 1-6pm

  • Where: Unite For Sight headquarters in downtown New Haven (across the street from Yale's Whitney Humanities Center)

Workshop Schedule: 1-6pm on Friday, November 13

  • 1:00-3:00pm - Healthcare Delivery, Best Practices, and Looking Beyond Good Intentions

    • The workshop will begin with a comprehensive discussion about the importance of best practices and the significant harm of worst practices in global health. How does one look beyond good intentions and ensure that they avoid the pitfalls? During this session, participants will learn from the lessons of successful and unsuccessful models, programs, and organizations.

  • 3:00-4:00pm - Social Entrepreneurship

    • This session will discuss successful strategies and models of social entrepreneurship. How do social enterprises operate, and what is the difference between charity and social entrepreneurship? Why is social entrepreneurship important in global health endeavors? Who are "invisible entrepreneurs", and how can they be supported?

  • 4:00-4:30pm - Metrics and Outcomes

    • As one develops an idea for implementation, how does one convey and measure impact? What is the difference between outcomes and outputs? Why are metrics important, and what is the role of global health research?

  • 4:30-6:00pm - Idea Incubator

    • Participants will learn how to start and expand new global health ideas and initiatives. What makes a great idea, and how does one transform ideas into action? The workshop participants are an impressive, diverse group who are committed to improving health and development worldwide. They are encouraged to network and collaborate.

GUITAR HERO IS DEAD - YALE ALUMNI TO CONTROL VIDEO GAMES WITH REAL GUITARS

Forget about using a plastic guitar to mimic your favorite band. What if you could use a real guitar just like any other video game joystick -- and thrash your opponent while you create original music?

Two Yale School of Music alumni calling themselves "Modal Kombat" have hacked into classic video games Pong, Tetris, Mortal Kombat and Mario Kart. On November 22 at The Monkey NYC, they'll make their characters move -- and battle against each other -- with a flurry of guitar-plucking.

The event, "Modal Mania - Modal Kombat Party" is a video-game battle/performance-art hybrid that's open to the public. The goal is to demonstrate that real guitars -- or other musical instruments -- can be viable video game controllers. The performance/party will celebrate and officially complete Modal Kombat's muti-city 2009 "Guitar Hero is Dead Tour". The festive atmosphere will include a performance of Modal Kombat's standard show plus some new guitar-controlled video gaming implementations.

Included in the ticket price will be an open bar before and after the show, formal and informal Q&A sessions with Modal Kombat members and opportunities for attendees to try out the guitar-controlled video game systems. New unreleased Modal Kombat apparel will also be on sale.

UPDATE:  In keeping with an old tradition, this year's Day After Thanksgiving Party will be a pot-luck event.  We'll have some food to get the party started, but please bring all of your delicious Thanksgiving leftovers and favorite drinks!  We'll even give out a small prize to the best turkey relleno out there.

Please join the Yale Latino Alumni Association of the Tri State Area in a night of celebration at the Annual Day After Thanksgiving Party!  This is a family style social gathering with snacks, alumni, current students, friends, and family --- all are welcome!

In an effort to raise clothing for a nearby shelter, we are gathering winter items for donation.  Please feel free to bring any items you wish to donate.

For those of you that may not know, during the last three decades Judge Padro has held a gathering of local Yale Latino alumni in his home on the day after Thanksgiving.  Many Latino undergraduates have their first contact with alumni at this gathering, and it has served of the basis for building life long professional relationships as well as friendships. We are proud to continue this tradition at Rodrigo and Melanie Fuentes' home.  Dress is casual, and we will continue the celebration after 10:00 p.m. at one of the area restaurant/bars.

We look forward to seeing you there!

This governmental centre is supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sport and The Ministry of Justice, The center is providing care and basic education for about 1000 disadvantaged children per year coming from many parts of Marrakech region who are orphan/abandon/disabled and refugees. Some of them are victims of crime or who have committed a delinquent act. They have low education level: nearly 90% don't know words; some of them haven't joined any official vocational training before. They come from very poor families or have no families at all.

The center aims to provide compulsory education and vocational training, to create employment opportunities for the children. The center has a wide variety of professional training for children of different age groups, ranging from infants to 18 years old. For example, children between the ages of 6 to 15 are provided with educational courses, and the older children are able to attend Professional training - including a variety of specialty courses at the center ( Joinery, sanitary plumbing, Electricity, Hairstyle, Painting and. Decorating ) .Furthermore, the center is helping to look for job opportunities for the children when they finish their courses.

The center is also a friendly place for local young people and international volunteers to come to explore their cultural diversity with lots of youth exchanges. The volunteers will join a team of local young people to manage the projects and participate in the daily activities at the center. Help is needed in everything from cooking and serving food to the children, to assisting with their basic education with sports and English lessons.  You need very high motivation, good communication skills and to be able to be independent in your work. This kind of workcamp is open to volunteers who are able to work with children and will be capable to accept their particularities. They will have to supervise the children and lead them by giving them general knowledge, and notions on health through games and playful situations that will educate them. The children will be led in that way enable them to discover another way of learning.

Volunteer responsibilities: The activities generally consist in leading the children in the different groups: drawing, painting and modelling group; singing and dancing group; tale and sketch Group; mobilizing and framing the children in various workshops of work according to the age: workshop tells, workshop music, workshop newspaper, environment, theatre, gym and sport etc. The volunteers will have to work five hours time in the morning. They are free in the afternoon when they could exchange their knowledge with the local population. Volunteers are invited to carry with them some games and anything that can contribute to lead the children. They can even present typical cultural aspects of their countries (songs, dances, games)

The volunteers can also participate to community activities as sensitization about how to promote local development about hygiene and environment protection for their free time. Each volunteer Responsible for day-to-day coordination of the School to ensure efficient performance of the organization operation:

  •  To teach Basic English, French and/or other languages to the children.
  •  The volunteers can also teach other basic subjects to the children (with the help of local volunteers)
