Join the Educational Programs Committee of the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York (YAAMNY) for a discussion and reception with Zeke Vanderhoek, Class of 1998, founder and principal of The Equity Project Charter School.

The Equity Project (TEP) is a charter school that opened in September 2009 located in Washington Heights, New York City. One of TEP's defining features is its teacher compensation-- TEP teachers are paid a salary of $125,000 and can earn a significant annual bonus based on school-wide performance.

Mr. Vanderhoek began his educational career as a 6th and 8th grade teacher at I.S. 90, a public middle school in Washington Heights. He has a B.A. from Yale University and a Masters in Philosophy & Education from Teachers College at Columbia University. He was the founder  of Manhattan GMAT, a national GMAT test-preparation company.

The discussion will be moderated by urban sociologist Dr. Pedro Noguera, professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at NYU. Dr. Noguera is also the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and the co-Director of the Institute for the study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings (IGEMS).

This a not-to-be-missed concert at Carnegie Hall: Symphony in C, featuring world-renowned Italian-Norwegian soprano Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz and famous conductor Mattia Rondelli. It is sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute and Pastificio Cocco: Carnegie Hall, Tuesday Feb 2, 2010 at 7:30pm.

The purpose of this concert is to promote rarely performed Italian classical and contemporary music and make it accessible to a wider audience - not only to "insiders". Mattia Rondelli realized that the perception of Italian "high" music is probably too skewed towards Opera and that so many masterpieces written by Italian composers could be somewhat re-discovered, especially by non experts.

The program includes three rarely performed pieces for string orchestra: Riccardo Luciani's Le Tombeau Perdu, Giuseppe Verdi's String Quartet in E minor, and Boccherini's Stabat Mater for soprano and orchestra.

Don't miss this chance to enjoy these truly "hidden gems" of musical Italy, played by top level soprano conductor and orchestra.

Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz has performed at the most prestigious opera houses in the world: the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Covent Garden, Opéra Bastille, Teatro Real di Madrid, Vienna Staatsoper and many others. She has collaborated with some of the greatest conductors of our time: Abbado, Colin Davis, Muti, Maazel, Mehta, Gergiev, Levine, Chung, Bychkov, Sinopoli, Solti, Masur, Ozawa, and Kleiber. Her many concert appearances include the Berlin Phiharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and San Francisco Symphony.

Mattia Rondelli recently recorded Boccherinis Stabat Mater for SONY Classical. His credentials include appearances with Beijing Opera Theater Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Parma Teatro Regio Symphony Orchestra, Arturo Toscanini Symphony Orchestra, La Fenice Orchestra, at the Bologna, MITO and Ravenna Festivals.

Luciani's Le Tombeau Perdu was written in 1991, the year when the classical music world marked the bicentennial of Mozarts death. In instrumental music, tombeau, which in French means tomb, signifies a musical tombstone. In true neoclassical spirit, A. Riccardo Luciani selected this instrumental genre, much popular in 17th century France, to pay tribute to the great composer.

Verdi's Quartet is the only surviving chamber music work in his catalogue. Written during a decade long pause in his operatic writings, it strikes the listener with its impressive sculptural vigor of the Allegro, the dancing advancement of the second movement that fades out into a moonlight-atmosphere reminiscent of Don Carlo, and the severity, sometime almost Beethovenian, of the ending Fuga. Better known to the wider public for his prolific instrumental output than for his vocal works,

Boccherini creates a true masterpiece in his Stabat Mater for soprano and strings. In his rendition of the medieval text, the 18th century Italian master captures in an unsurpassed manner the immediacy, awesome power and heartrending intensity of the maternal sorrow that makes the Passion of Christ so emotionally involving.

The New Haven chapter of Architecture for Humanity will host a screening of the film "One Peace at a Time" at BAR (254 Crown St, New Haven) on February 11th at 6.30pm as a benefit for Architecture for Humanitys efforts to rebuild Haiti.  A requested $10 donation will be collected at the door. All proceeds will go to Architecture for Humanity's Haiti Reconstruction Appeal. The event is sponsored by Centerbrook Architects and BAR restaurant.

One Peace at a Time, a feature documentary by director Turk Pipkin, highlights solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems.  Pipkin went on a five-continent, two-year search for a better way ahead and for the answer to one basic question: Can we provide basic rights -- water, nutrition, education, healthcare, and a sustainable and peaceful environment -- to every child on earth? The film includes the insights of Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Physicist Steven Chu, (Barack Obama's Secretary of Energy), Dr. Helene Gayle (CEO of CARE, International), American music legend Willie Nelson, and others.
The solutions Pipkin chronicles include the model Indian orphanages of The Miracle Foundation, family planning initiatives with Thailand's Mechai Viravaidya, Ethiopian water projects with A Glimmer of Hope, and Architecture for Humanity's global design challenge for communities in need.

About Architecture for Humanity

As you all know, this year is a census year, and the entire population of New Haven will be counted this April. In the past decade after our last census, New Haven lost $30 million in federal funding for homeless shelters, hospitals, etc. due to the undercount in 2000, and each person who isn't counted in New Haven costs the city around $9,600 in city services.

Not only have Yale students been severely undercounted (we had about 30% reporting in 2000), but there are many populations within New Haven that have been historically undercounted as well. This year, the Mayor's Office has brought together a task force to work on getting New Haven counted this year for the census, and they have asked for help from Yale student groups in reaching out to various parts of the New Haven community.

Your groups serve as Yales strongest connection to the New Haven community, and we would greatly appreciate your help in getting the word out that the census is happening this year. We are planning an informational/organizational meeting led by April Lawson, Director of Census Planning for the City of New Haven, this Friday at 11:00am in the Dwight Hall Library - please attend if your group would be willing to participate in the Yale student effort this year.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Kyle Staver: Recent Work

February 17 - March 20, 2010
Opening reception Thursday, February 18, 5 to 7 pm
Catalog available Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present our third exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Kyle Staver. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with an essay by independent curator and critic, Karen Wilkin.

In this series of recent paintings Kyle Staver continues her exploration of intimate scenes while incorporating pensive hues and darker themes. Throughout her career Staver has portrayed the joys of the ordinary world of afternoon bike rides, morning cups of coffee and dressing for the day. Her new paintings depict figure skaters flying through the air and Canada geese soaring overhead. These scenes, with their deepened palette and monumental compositions, evoke masters such as Gustave Courbet and Pablo Picasso.  A number of paintings in this body of new work depart from the domestic arena to delve into allegorical realms of spatial and emotional complexity.  In one painting, a voluptuous woman on horseback gazes unashamed out at the viewer, while in another two men are completely engrossed in an almost savage hunt for snapping turtles.  As Karen Wilkin describes in the catalog, Here, unlike the paintings of domesticity, it seems clear that something not only specific but probably significant is happening. But what is it?  In contrast to the sense of unremarkable contentment in Stavers domestic pictures, theres an elusive suggestion of the disquieting, a suggestion intensified by unstable space, more tipped and layered than in many of Stavers previous works. This sense of the preternatural and the uncanny defines this new body of Kyle Stavers paintings and prints.

In the exhibition catalog, Wilkin continues, Staver's new paintings and prints constitute some of her most vigorous, engaging work to date.  They reaffirm that the time-honored tradition of painterly figure painting and the medium of paint on canvas are still vital and provocative."

Kyle Staver received her BA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and her MFA in Painting from Yale University in 1987. Additionally, she attended Camberwell College of Arts in London.  Her work has been exhibited at Lohin Geduld Gallery, Denise Bibro Fine Art and Maurice Arlos Fine Art in New York, and at Hackett -Freedman Gallery in San Francisco.  Staver is a recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award and the Benjamin Altman Figure Prize from the National Academy of Design . Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times , The New York Sun, The New York Observer and The Hudson Review.

Experiential Learning Initiative: Africa (ELI Africa; formerly HOPE Global Initiative) is looking for enthusiastic, dedicated Yalies to lead hands-on learning projects and community-building programs for underprivileged youth in Mauritius this summer. Participants (Fellows) will work as a team and with local educators to run targeted creative projects in sustainable agriculture, health/fitness, IT and creative arts, and to establish links between kids and members of the local community. As part of our pilot program, Fellows will also have the opportunity to shape the future of ELI Africa and to develop long-term strategy and initiatives.

While Mauritius is to many a high-end tourist destination owing its popularity to its fair climate and vast sandy beaches, the other side of the coin rarely gets reported. Extreme poverty, a rising HIV rate, and low educational opportunities are a reality for many children in Mauritius. ELI Africa works with orphans and with children who have fallen out of the main education system to create sustainable learning solutions in areas of practical knowledge, and to help them reach their full potential and broaden their horizons.
Program Dates:The program runs for two months in the summer from June 1 until July 31, 2010.
Funding:We will provide a significant stipend for pre- arranged housing, local transportation and all project resources; applicants should expect to pay for their own airfare, food, a small portion of housing, and personal effects (cell phone, etc).
Applications: To apply, please submit the following to  This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript  no later than February 19th:
     Resume
Cover letter (fewer than 500 words)
In the cover letter, please speak to skills and/or experiences that reflect your ability to develop and facilitate projects in a team setting, and that may help you work with children in a foreign and unique environment like Mauritius.

Academic Decathlon is the premier academic compeittion for high school students in the country, with a rigorous curriculum in Economics, Essay, Art, Interview, Language and Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science, and Speech. Students will be asked to consider these topics in relation to the 2009-2010 theme, "The French Revolution."

Jenifer Grant the daughter of the founders of Hospital Albert Schweitzer, Gwen Grant Mellon and Dr. Larimer Mellon.  She has been involved with Hospital Albert Schweitzer, which is located 60 miles (2 hours) outside of Port au Prince,  since its doors opened on June 26, 1956.  After a career of teaching middle school students, including 7 years in New Haven at The Foote School, she is now retired and has even more time to devote to HAS.  She is a member of the board of directors.  Not being medical, she has found a niche in the horticultural aspects of the HAS campus and contiguous areas.  She travels to Haiti and Hospital Albert Schweitzer about 4 times a year for a week or two. Groundbreaking live multimedia production by the Coal Free Future Project.  New Haven stop on its nation-wide tour!

This original and groundbreaking multimedia production that brings a national audience into the frontlines of the coalfields and mountaintop removal issue today. The play draws from real-life experience and documentation, and seeks to recover forgotten history in our nations dark legacy of coal mining.    The Project is a collection of writers, actors, filmmakers and musicians, envisioning a coal-free future.  See the trailer at http://coalfreefutureproject.org/

Part of the series of events, Appalachia in Transition: Beyond MTR -- Fostering a Dialogue on Mountaintop Removal Mining
About the series:  Mountaintop Removal coal mining (MTR) is one of the most egregious environmental assaults happening in the United States, with disturbing social justice implications.  Yet few seem to know it is happening.   This event series aims to highlight the travesty of the current mining practices, educate about ways to get involved in the effort to address MTR, and to facilitate conversation about alternative economic drivers as the region begins a transition away from a coal-based economy.

Have an idea for a short-term service project? Make your project a Dwight Hall Short Term Project!

This semester, for the first time, Dwight Hall is opening up applications to individuals who would like to organize and execute a short-term service project. These projects should reflect Dwight Halls mission of fostering civic-minded student leaders who promote activism in New Haven and around the world. At the same time, short-term projects should be designed to accomplish their mission over the course of a semester or a year.

Historically, only Dwight Hall groups and affiliate organizations have access to Dwight Hall resources such as funding, cars, connections, and advising. Dwight Hall short-term project initiatives will have access to most of the same resources as member groups except for funding, which may be limited depending on the scope and timeline of the project. After the completion of the project, the project group will be required to give back to Dwight Hall through Phone-a-thon hours.

Racing to the Top: Education Reform in New Haven and Connecticut

Do you care deeply about public education? Are you concerned about the achievement gap between low-income students and their affluent peers? Are you sure that we need better schools, but uncertain how you can help?

Please join the Yale College Democrats and students from across Yale's campus on Thursday, February 25 from 6:00 PM to 6:45 in the Dwight Hall Chapel as we gather to show our support for New Haven's public schools and explore ways to create school change statewide.

The event will include:

  • Mayor John Destefano Jr., who will speak about New Haven's ongoing School Change Campaign, which Arne Duncan (the Obama administration's Secretary of Education) has repeatedly praised as a model for other school districts to follow in pursuing school reform.
  • Performances by members of WORD as well New Haven public school students.
  • Opportunities to take action. Find out how you can be an advocate for better schools throughout the state of Connecticut. As Connecticut competes for federal Race to the Top funding, now is the time for the legislature to embrace substantive education reform. Whether you only have a few minutes or you're willing to become more involved, you have the opportunity to act directly to effect change.

RSVP to the Facebook event here, and feel free to invite your friends.

LOOKING FOR LIFE
[Chercher La Vie] (In Creole and French with English
subtitles)
  Director:   Coulanges, Claudette
  Cast:
  Year:   1999
  Running Time (in minutes):   60
Chercher la Vie ("Looking tor Life") introduces the viewer to two women, Anne-Rose and Rosemène, who each have their own particular way of battling through life. The former makes lunches in a factory yard in Port-au-Prince and sells her meals to the factory workers; the latter is employed in the same factory as a production worker making pullovers and T-shirts. Every day she buys her midday meal on credit from Anne-Rose. Through the connection between these two women the film reveals part of their daily work and the constant battle for survival that they lead together with other women in Haiti. Going beyond this, however the film shows at first hand the extent to which importing of North American goods has brought about the collapse of Haitian regional production and ruined Haiti's economic circumstances. The connection between these two concerns of the film, which at first glance may not necessarily seem related, reveals the significant role that Haitian women of today play in an economy that has been bled dry. AGRONOMIST, THE
  Director:   Demme, Jonathan
  Cast:
  Year:   2003
  Running Time (in minutes):   90

Jean Dominique, the Haitian radio personality, investigative journalist, and political activist who was assassinated in April 2000, is the subject of Jonathan Demme's informative documentary. Demme, who has directed other documentaries about charismatic figures such as Spalding Gray (SWIMMING TO CAMBODIA), asked Dominique to participate in this film in 1991. At that time, Dominique was exiled from Haiti and living in New York City, where he remained dedicated to combatting the oppressive Haitian government. Interviews with Dominique and his wife Michele Montas shed light on the strong personalities and utter conviction of these two charming renegades, while Demme interweaves footage that puts their lives in context. Shots of their independent radio station, Radio Haiti, show the husband-wife team broadcasting inside the station, as well as the building's bullet-riddled exterior. A tour of Dominique's childhood home, where his mother shares her reflections, instantly communicate his deep attachment to Haiti. Meanwhile, harder pictures of riots and violence show the country's deep-seated poverty, injustice, and political unrest. All of this culminates in a simple explanation of why Dominique was so dedicated to trying to make a change. With a nice balance of character development--highlighting Dominique's remarkable spirit--and political background about Haiti and Dominique's impact on its people, THE AGRONOMIST is a superb film. The excellent, dub-heavy soundtrack by Wyclef Jean brings a contemporary edge to the film's events.
