Due to overwhelming response, this event has reached capacity. Thanks to all who signed up, and we look forward to bringing more events like this in the future. Join the Educational Programs Committee of the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York (YAAMNY) for a discussion and reception with Zeke Vanderhoek, Class of 1998, founder and principal of The Equity Project Charter School. The Equity Project (TEP) is a charter school that opened in September 2009 located in Washington Heights, New York City. One of TEP's defining features is its teacher compensation-- TEP teachers are paid a salary of $125,000 and can earn a significant annual bonus based on school-wide performance. Mr. Vanderhoek began his educational career as a 6th and 8th grade teacher at I.S. 90, a public middle school in Washington Heights. He has a B.A. from Yale University and a Masters in Philosophy & Education from Teachers College at Columbia University. He was the founder of Manhattan GMAT, a national GMAT test-preparation company. The discussion will be moderated by urban sociologist Dr. Pedro Noguera, professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at NYU. Dr. Noguera is also the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and the co-Director of the Institute for the study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings (IGEMS). This a not-to-be-missed concert at Carnegie Hall: Symphony in C, featuring world-renowned Italian-Norwegian soprano Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz and famous conductor Mattia Rondelli. It is sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute and Pastificio Cocco: Carnegie Hall, Tuesday Feb 2, 2010 at 7:30pm. The purpose of this concert is to promote rarely performed Italian classical and contemporary music and make it accessible to a wider audience - not only to "insiders". Mattia Rondelli realized that the perception of Italian "high" music is probably too skewed towards Opera and that so many masterpieces written by Italian composers could be somewhat re-discovered, especially by non experts. The program includes three rarely performed pieces for string orchestra: Riccardo Luciani's Le Tombeau Perdu, Giuseppe Verdi's String Quartet in E minor, and Boccherini's Stabat Mater for soprano and orchestra. Don't miss this chance to enjoy these truly "hidden gems" of musical Italy, played by top level soprano conductor and orchestra. CarnegieCharge (212) 247 - 7800 http://www.carnegiehall.org/article/box_office/events/evt_ 15352.html?selecteddate=02022010 Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz has performed at the most prestigious opera houses in the world: the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Covent Garden, Opéra Bastille, Teatro Real di Madrid, Vienna Staatsoper and many others. She has collaborated with some of the greatest conductors of our time: Abbado, Colin Davis, Muti, Maazel, Mehta, Gergiev, Levine, Chung, Bychkov, Sinopoli, Solti, Masur, Ozawa, and Kleiber. Her many concert appearances include the Berlin Phiharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and San Francisco Symphony. Mattia Rondelli recently recorded Boccherinis Stabat Mater for SONY Classical. His credentials include appearances with Beijing Opera Theater Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Parma Teatro Regio Symphony Orchestra, Arturo Toscanini Symphony Orchestra, La Fenice Orchestra, at the Bologna, MITO and Ravenna Festivals. Luciani's Le Tombeau Perdu was written in 1991, the year when the classical music world marked the bicentennial of Mozarts death. In instrumental music, tombeau, which in French means tomb, signifies a musical tombstone. In true neoclassical spirit, A. Riccardo Luciani selected this instrumental genre, much popular in 17th century France, to pay tribute to the great composer.
Verdi's Quartet is the only surviving chamber music work in his catalogue. Written during a decade long pause in his operatic writings, it strikes the listener with its impressive sculptural vigor of the Allegro, the dancing advancement of the second movement that fades out into a moonlight-atmosphere reminiscent of Don Carlo, and the severity, sometime almost Beethovenian, of the ending Fuga. Better known to the wider public for his prolific instrumental output than for his vocal works, Boccherini creates a true masterpiece in his Stabat Mater for soprano and strings. In his rendition of the medieval text, the 18th century Italian master captures in an unsurpassed manner the immediacy, awesome power and heartrending intensity of the maternal sorrow that makes the Passion of Christ so emotionally involving. The New Haven chapter of Architecture for Humanity will host a screening of the film "One Peace at a Time" at BAR (254 Crown St, New Haven) on February 11th at 6.30pm as a benefit for Architecture for Humanitys efforts to rebuild Haiti. A requested $10 donation will be collected at the door. All proceeds will go to Architecture for Humanity's Haiti Reconstruction Appeal. The event is sponsored by Centerbrook Architects and BAR restaurant. One Peace at a Time, a feature documentary by director Turk Pipkin, highlights solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems. Pipkin went on a five-continent, two-year search for a better way ahead and for the answer to one basic question: Can we provide basic rights -- water, nutrition, education, healthcare, and a sustainable and peaceful environment -- to every child on earth? The film includes the insights of Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Physicist Steven Chu, (Barack Obama's Secretary of Energy), Dr. Helene Gayle (CEO of CARE, International), American music legend Willie Nelson, and others.
The solutions Pipkin chronicles include the model Indian orphanages of The Miracle Foundation, family planning initiatives with Thailand's Mechai Viravaidya, Ethiopian water projects with A Glimmer of Hope, and Architecture for Humanity's global design challenge for communities in need.
About Architecture for Humanity Architecture for Humanity is a nonprofit design services organization founded in 1999. We build a more sustainable future through the power of professional design. Tapping into a network of more than 40,000 professionals willing to lend time and expertise to help those who would not otherwise be able to afford their services, we bring design, construction and development services where they are critically needed.

As you all know, this year is a census year, and the entire population of New Haven will be counted this April. In the past decade after our last census, New Haven lost $30 million in federal funding for homeless shelters, hospitals, etc. due to the undercount in 2000, and each person who isn't counted in New Haven costs the city around $9,600 in city services. Heads up all you actors, singers, singer-songwriters, musicians, comics ... in a word, performers out to make your mark in the Apple. In line with our mandate to bring creative arts folk together, YAAMNY Arts/Entertainment is planning a series of performance parties. We have secured the use of a large pleasant space in Brooklyn, complete with a piano, excellent PA system - and inexpensive food and drink, and will hold an organizational meeting and tryouts for our first Performers' Round-up on Saturday, February 13th. If you want to participate in the round-up, please join us for this meeting and be ready to give us a sample of what you can do. Performers must limit themselves to 10-12 minutes. The actual YAAMNY/ Arts Performers' Round-Up will be in April, details to be posted on the YAAMNY site soon. After the performance there will be time for informal networking. And you don't have to be on stage to come to the performance; just be ready to enjoy yourself and meet alumni/ae in all the arts, all ages, all stages of their careers. Please notify me ASAP ( This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript ) if you will be joining us on February 13 for try-outs, and tell me what type of performer you are. Three male high school students need male mentors as part of the Green Jobs Program. Common Ground High School is a charter high school focused on environmental studies (www.nhep.com). Common Ground is partnering with the Yale Urban Resources Initiative, Solar Youth, CitySeed, and The Consultation Center to create the Green Job Corps -- an employment and leadership development program that links Common Ground students with meaningful, paid, environmental jobs. It also requires a mentoring component. Mentoring would be two hours per week from 3-5, and the day of the week is flexible. There is a general structure in place for mentoring. E-mail

Experiential Learning Initiative: Africa (ELI Africa; formerly HOPE Global Initiative) is looking for enthusiastic, dedicated Yalies to lead hands-on learning projects and community-building programs for underprivileged youth in Mauritius this summer. Participants (Fellows) will work as a team and with local educators to run targeted creative projects in sustainable agriculture, health/fitness, IT and creative arts, and to establish links between kids and members of the local community. As part of our pilot program, Fellows will also have the opportunity to shape the future of ELI Africa and to develop long-term strategy and initiatives. While Mauritius is to many a high-end tourist destination owing its popularity to its fair climate and vast sandy beaches, the other side of the coin rarely gets reported. Extreme poverty, a rising HIV rate, and low educational opportunities are a reality for many children in Mauritius. ELI Africa works with orphans and with children who have fallen out of the main education system to create sustainable learning solutions in areas of practical knowledge, and to help them reach their full potential and broaden their horizons.
Program Dates:The program runs for two months in the summer from June 1 until July 31, 2010.
Funding:We will provide a significant stipend for pre- arranged housing, local transportation and all project resources; applicants should expect to pay for their own airfare, food, a small portion of housing, and personal effects (cell phone, etc).
Applications: To apply, please submit the following to

We write to invite you to join us at the Connecticut Academic Decathlon State Competition on Saturday, February 20th. Academic Decathlon is the premier academic compeittion for high school students in the country, with a rigorous curriculum in Economics, Essay, Art, Interview, Language and Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science, and Speech. Students will be asked to consider these topics in relation to the 2009-2010 theme, "The French Revolution."
(Please visit www.usad.org if you would like more information about the competition.)
We will be hosting the competition in Linsly-Chittenden Hall (63 High St, New Haven) at Yale University, and we would like to invite you to join us as judges, interviewers, and essay readers. This will be a great opportunity to interact with Connecticut students hailing from all parts of our state and help us celebrate academic competition as much as athletic competition is celebrated elsewhere.
We are looking for 6 volunteers to judge essays, and about 20 volunteers to judge speeches and conduct interviews. No prior experience required, and training will be provided on site.
Essay judges are needed in LC from 10:30am to 12:30pm. It's going to be 20 minutes of training and one and a half hour of essay reading, followed by a complimentary lunch. Speech/interview judges need to be at Dwight Hall from 3:15 pm to 5:15. It'll be 20 minutes training with snacks and 1.5 hour speech/interview judging, followed by a complimentary dinner.
Interested volunteers should email This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript with their commitment and preference for essay, speech, or interview. Volunteers do not need to state a preference, and we would actualy appreciate that because it will give us the flexibility we need to fill all the necessary spots. All assignments will be confirmed by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, February 18th.
Please let either of us know if you have any questions or if you need help with organizing logisitics.
Thank you, and we look forward to seeing all of you there!

Jenifer Grant the daughter of the founders of Hospital Albert Schweitzer, Gwen Grant Mellon and Dr. Larimer Mellon. She has been involved with Hospital Albert Schweitzer, which is located 60 miles (2 hours) outside of Port au Prince, since its doors opened on June 26, 1956. After a career of teaching middle school students, including 7 years in New Haven at The Foote School, she is now retired and has even more time to devote to HAS. She is a member of the board of directors. Not being medical, she has found a niche in the horticultural aspects of the HAS campus and contiguous areas. She travels to Haiti and Hospital Albert Schweitzer about 4 times a year for a week or two. Her talk will focus on the founding of the hospital by two very remarkable people, how the hospital has evolved into more than a hospital with extensive Community Health and Community Development activities. She will explain the effects of the earthquake on the hospital and how HAS will be affected in both the near and farther future by this catastrophe. Additional Info/Contact: | ||

Come learn over cocktails how you can help Randall's Island Sports Foundation (RISF) ensure that we all have a wonderful place in NYC to go outside and play! Since 1992, RISF has worked to protect, develop and restore Randall's Island. Today the Island is home to a world class track & field center, over 60 new ball fields, a state-of-the-art tennis center, a golf center with over 80 driving range stalls, beautiful bicycle and pedestrian pathways that overlook the water, and acres of newly restored wetlands. As we transition from a development/restoration phase to a stewardship phase, RISF looks to harness the energy of a diverse and talented group of Young Professional who will grow with and support RISF in the years to come.
