Come find out how YOU can get involved with the passage of the DREAM Act!

---

Immigration is NOT a Latino issue.

Contrary to the images perpetuated by the media, the realities of immigration policies affect all of our communities, not just the Latino working class. Every year, over 65,000 undocumented students, who entered this country before reaching 16 years of age, graduate from high school with their arms tied behind their back. Though these students have graduated despite all the odds in a country they have taken up as their own, they face additional obstacles in the form of college tuition, an inability to legally work, and the daily fear of deportation and discrimination.

The DREAM Act would grant these students, as selected by strict guidelines, a six year period of temporary residence in which they would be expected to complete two years worth of courses toward a bachelor's degree or two years worth of military service. If they accomplish one or the other, they will be granted citizenship.

These students are your friends. Status is not something loosely revealed, so it may very well be that your best friends at Yale are among those daily affected by the debilitating fear of deportation or of graduating from Yale with nowhere to go.

Support your friends and undocumented students throughout the country. Support the DREAM Act.

Where:   Your New York venue!

The Yale Women's Slavic Chorus (better known as the "Slavs") will be touring New York City March 6-13, 2010, presenting workshops and concerts of traditional and arranged music from all over the Balkans and Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, and the Ukraine.

The chorus, founded in 1969, celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. Now 14 undergraduates and a law student carry the tradition, singing mostly a capella with occasional dumbek, violin or accordion and wearing traditional costumes. We have performed at the White House and a Yale presidential dinner with a Supreme Court judge of China, in addition to weddings, schools, cultural festivals, nursing homes, and Dwight hall for our own semester concerts at Yale.

We are an entirely student-run, student-directed ensemble. We transcribe and arrange much of our own music, learning from recordings of authentic Slavic and Balkan groups, workshops with well-known singers, and travels the countries from which our songs originate including Bulgaria in 2007 and Croatia this coming summer. On these trips, we visit small villages, taking master classes and learning songs from local vocalists. We sing songs of love, work, war, country life, and sorrow, striving to maintain the dissonant harmonies, unusual rhythms, and distinctive vocal qualities which make Slavic music unique and exciting for many listeners.

Classical Voice of North Carolina said of our music: The intonation of these women was nothing short of miraculous. In addition to the incredibly complex rhythmic and harmonic elements, sometimes you just marveled at the beauty of something as simple as their crystalline and perfect unisons Despite what must be extremely difficult music, they exuded a totally natural and effortless demeanor and each song was a new and thrilling adventure for the audience.

If you are interested in learning more about us or hearing the music yourself, our website is http://www.yale.edu/ysc/. Hear more at http://www.youtube.com/user/YaleSlavs.

If you know of a church, museum, party or other organization that might benefit from our music this spring, or if you are interested in sponsoring a public concert, please call or email Anna Rose Gable at 404 226 0996 or anna[dot]gable[at]yale[dot]edu.

Prison Gerrymandering: Where will we count prisoners?  A panel discussion announcing a new report on CT and a legislative fix for 2010
Sandwiches & snacks will be served

Panelists Miles Rapoport, President of Demos & former CT Secretary of State; Peter Wagner, Executive Director of Prison Policy Initiative; Gary Holder-Winfield, State Representative for New Haven, CT; and Mike Lawlor, State Representative for East Haven, CT (and Chair of the Joint Committee on Judiciary) discuss the political impact of counting prisoners.  In Connecticut, without using prison populations as padding, 7 districts are missing more than 5 percent of their required population.  These prisoners cant vote and come mostly from Connecticuts cities.  How does this impact policy decisions?  How does this play out in Connecticut and elsewhere in the country?  And how should we count prisoners?  This event is cosponsored by Yale Law Schools chapter of the American Constitution Society, the Arthur Liman Public Interest Program, and Dwight Hall at Yale.

Dear Dwight Hall Members,

Ready to make progressive change in New Haven? Want to engage with local politics? Join the Ward 1 Democratic Committee!

We're 2010-2012 members of the New Haven Democratic Town Committee, where we represent you - as a Ward 1 resident - to the city's Democratic umbrella organization. That means that we're also co-chairs of the Ward 1 Democratic Committee, the body of 50 registered Ward 1 Democrats that links the student community at Yale to the broader politics of the city of New Haven.

Each of New Haven's 30 wards has its own ward committee, and the job of every ward committee in the city begins with voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts. At and near election time, this will also form the primary work of our Ward Committee - and it's important work: our city and state are facing crucial elections this year, and we need to bring Yalies to the polls to vote for Democratic change. At the same time, the Ward 1 Committee will also function as a community organization for the voters of our ward: we'll be a connection to local decision-makers, a source of political information, and an open forum on city policy for every progressive student and organization in Ward 1.

But we need your help to make Yale students a powerful force in New Haven and Connecticut politics. Express your interest in serving our city at tinyurl.com/joinward1.

Sincerely,
Amalia Horan Skilton CC '13 and Rachel Payne SY '1

Hi Dwight Hall!

You are in the midst of the Dwight Hall-YCC Week of Service! At the top of the newsletter are descriptions for the remaining events this week, all of which are excellent opportunities to explore service and social justice!

This Saturday, give back to our community by taking part in the Yale Day of Service: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dFByd0ZVZEFaZ3MtNzEwU0VvVHJpX2c6MA

This is going to be an AWESOME event. We have great volunteer sites where you can make a significant difference.

Whether you are an avid Dwight Hall volunteer or have never done anything community service or social justice-related before, we encourage you to take part in the events we have this week!

See you at the Day of Service!

Joe
